American Graduation Ritual

When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable system of academic apparel a century ago, it seemed to them best to agree on a definite system, which all institutions might follow. Accordingly, on May 16, 1895 a conference was held among all interested institutions. From this meeting came the suggestion of a standard academic dress. An organization still exists today to provide sources of information and guidance in matters of academic dress. Hundreds of institutions follow, either wholly or in part, the standards set down by the original conference. The American University in Dubai is among these institutions. The academic costume code includes rules governing the style of cap and gown, material used, color and any trimmings. The American University in Dubai has followed many of these standards. For the Associate degree candidates, the students are wearing a standard black gown with slightly flared and pointed sleeves. The Bachelor’s degree candidates are wearing the same cap and gown but also have a mantle. The mantle is worn over the shoulders, and its colors are associated with the different disciplines taught at the university. The inside of every mantle is lined in royal blue satin with a white chevron, indicating the university's colors. Students receiving a degree in Business have a red velvet border on their mantle; for Engineering, orange; for Information Technology, fuscia; for Interior Design, dark yellow; and for Visual Communication, brown. For Master’s degree candidates, the length of the mantle is longer than the Bachelor’s mantle; so, too, are the sleeves wider. The Master’s mantles all have red velvet borders which are wider and indicate that they are all receiving business degrees. The administrators, faculty, and staff are wearing the academic dress from the institution from which they received their highest degree or an American University in Dubai academic costume. The students wear a cap or "mortar board" in black with a black tassel. For undergraduate candidates, the black tassel is worn on the right side until they have been conferred a degree. At this point, the tassel is moved to the left and is worn on the left whenever the academic costume is worn thereafter. Master’s candidates wear the tassel on the left side. Undergraduate candidates who have earned academic honors are denoted by honor cords, which are worn around the neck and are visible on the front of the gown. Bachelor’s candidates are distinguished by three levels of academic honors based on their grade point average: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude. Cum Laude graduates are wearing gold/red cords. Magna Cum Laude graduates are wearing silver cords. Summa Cum Laude graduates are wearing gold cords. Summa Cum Laude is the highest undergraduate academic distinction. There are no honors at the graduate level. The academic procession is led by a Marshal carrying the university's flag. In the procession today, Master’s candidates are first, followed by the Bachelor’s candidates. After the students enter, another Marshal leads the faculty and staff. They are then followed by the academic unit heads, administration, and the Keynote Speaker who will be participating in the Order of Exercises. The President of the university is the last in. The procession ends with two Marshals carrying flags of the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. The President leads the Recessional.

The American University in Dubai: an Overview The American University in Dubai is a private, non-sectarian institution of higher learning founded in 1995. AUD's enrollment in 2007-2008 averaged 2,750 students. In Spring 2008, eighty-three nationalities were represented in the AUD student body. AUD offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. A four-year Bachelor’s (BBA) degree is offered in Business Administration (with optional concentrations in Accounting, e-Business, Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing and Marketing Communications). BFA (Bachelor’s of Fine Arts) degrees are offered in Visual Communication (with optional concentrations in Advertising [Creative], Graphic Design, Photography and Studio Art) and Interior Design. The university also offers the Bachelor’s of Information Technology (BIT) degree (with optional concentrations in Application Design and Development, Database Development and Operations and Network Infrastructure Design and Administration) and a Bachelor’s of Communication and Information Studies (BCIS) with optional concentrations in Radio/Television/Cinema and Journalism. The AUD School of Engineering, established in 2001 through collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology, offers the Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degree in Civil, Computer and Electrical Engineering. The Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) is offered as a generalist degree, with the option to specialize in either International Marketing or International Finance. It consists of a twelve-course curriculum delivered in the evening. Additional concentrations in Health Care Management and Management of Construction Projects are planned for 2008. AUD is officially licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the United Arab Emirates. The Ministry has accredited all of the university’s programs. In addition to courses in their chosen major/concentration, undergraduate students in all disciplines must follow a curriculum in Liberal Arts. This is in fulfillment of the general education portion of their degree requirements. Through its Center for English Proficiency, the university also conducts Intensive and Academic English programs designed to develop university-level English language skills in students requiring additional language study before commencing university. The university’s faculty possess outstanding academic credentials. Furthermore, many are or have been practicing professionals of note. In terms of faculty composition, North Americans have the highest representation of any national group. AUD’s multi-complex facility has been conceived with the objective of supporting the university’s programs (both academic and extra-curricular) to an American standard. A 13,000 square meter Student Center housing an in-door gymnasium and offering multi-services (including food court, travel agency, supermarket, and bank) is set to open in fall 2008. This Center will also add 18 classrooms/labs and 21 faculty offices to AUD’s existing facilities.

American Education

It is widely believed that American education is synonymous with “quality”. This belief is particularly prevalent with regards to American education at the university level. Several factors are judged to explain this excellence: a curriculum that imparts general knowledge but allows for significant specialization; faculty who consistently contribute to scholarship in addition to exercising their classroom duties; teaching methods that develop in students strong skills in critical reasoning and accurate and persuasive self-expression; the maintenance of high academic standards via clear and consistent policies; and instilling in students an appreciation for life-long learning. The American University in Dubai seeks to duplicate this American recipe for success. Syllabi and textbooks are the same as those used in the United States. In addition, the predominance of American and American-trained faculty further ensures that the university be American in substance as well as in name. Expectations of academic performance either match or exceed those prevailing on a “typical” American campus. But as with any institution of higher learning, The American University in Dubai -- albeit by working within an American framework -- has developed a character of its own. This is in large part inspired by its sensitivity to the needs of the student populace of the Middle Eastern terrain in which it operates. While the university’s faculty tend to be more teaching- rather than research-oriented, they often enjoy a professional status uncommon among academics. AUD’s curriculum across all disciplines is skill-directed and career-oriented. Everything from academic advising to the approach to faculty-student interaction in- and outside the classroom, as well as career counseling, is implemented with attention to the needs of the individual student. It is for this reason that class sizes are relatively small, and all faculty follow an “open door” policy with regard to office hours. Finally, the globalization of business and communications makes it imperative that the university’s educational programs be delivered with an international perspective and that a tolerance for cultural diversity be promoted through both curricular and extra-curricular activities.
