I believe our chapter has always emulated this criteria but the difficulty to pull together all the data, graphics, photos, design and content with a volunteer organization is a very extensive process. I am proud to say our chapter was recognized as a Grand Prize Winner in 2010, and I am proud that we submitted this year. With that, I want to reflect on the past and what will be the future of the chapter. As my time as President winds down and I start to look back on this year, I realize as a volunteer organization we have accomplished a lot. This is because of the foundation that has been laid before us. Our financial health would not be what it is today if we did not have people like Patti Eaves or Maggie Chaffin paving the way before us. We would not have the only UCF student chapter in all of SMPS chapters if it wasn’t for gusto of Paul J. Ford, Bill Randolph and Kimberly Ridenour. Finally, our chapter would not be known within the community if it wasn’t for the hard work of all our past presidents and volunteers who have continued to pave the way and build our chapter to what it is today. I thank all of them for ensuring my year would be a positive experience. And that is why I am excited to focus on the future and what is to come with our President-Elect, Carrie Davis. Carrie just returned from the President’s Leadership Symposium in Alexandria, Virginia, and has the excitement and charm to take on the world. I know that she will be a remarkable president who will continue to progress us to a sustainable future. We did it! Our chapter submitted for the Striving for Excellence Award (SFE), one of the most demanding documents I believe I have ever been involved with. To say it was a challenge is an understatement. The intent of this award is to recognize those chapters that significantly advance and enhance professional services marketing and business development through excellent programs, strong leadership, increased membership, quality communications, and strong financial health.

As my time as President winds down and I start to look back on this year,

SMPS Central Florida Members,

As the end of the summer approaches, so does the end of SMPS Central Florida’s board year. As the incoming President, I would like to share with you my enthusiasm for the coming year. Our Directors and Committees are enthusiastic and preparing for what should be a monumental year for our chapter. We have many new faces and many returning faces, if there was a time to get more engaged in our chapter, it is now! This collaborative mixture of new-comers with fresh ideas and tenured members who are reengaging, has created this synergy within our chapter that has invigorated us all. You will see Programs that have never been done before that are more responsive to what is happening in the marketplace; Marketing Mechanics training sessions that will help you, as marketers, sharpen your skill set like never before; and Educational Seminars that will help take your career to the next level.

My job as Chapter President is to communicate our vision to our members and I would like to start by sharing with you our Strategic Plan that our Board of Directors and Advisors put in place earlier this summer. Specifically, we established our purpose, values, vision and mission for the 2016-17 Board Year and beyond.

Purpose: To enrich knowledge and advance practices that build business for professional services firms.

Values: The essential and enduring principles that guide the behavior of SMPS Central Florida.

Informed | Life Long Learning | Relationships | Community | Integrity

Vision: For professional services firms to recognize SMPS as their most trusted resource for building business, achieving success, enriching marketing professionals careers and as the essential to the success of all professional services firms.

Mission: To advocate for, educate, and connect leaders in the building industry.

Our goal is for SMPS Central Florida to be widely recognized and valued for its knowledge and expertise in practices that build business for A/E/C professional services firms. We want to be a thriving network of professionals interested in the practice of marketing and business development for professional services firms, as well as provide them with the necessary knowledge, skills, tools, and expertise to develop, manage, and drive success for their firms.

To close, I would like to thank every member who serves on a committee in any capacity, Thank You! Our organization is completely run by volunteers and you are truly what makes our chapter successful. I am honored to serve with you and consider myself very lucky to have this opportunity to lead and learn with this SMPS Central Florida this year.

All the best,

Carrie E. DavisSMPS Central Florida Chapter President ElectHensel Phelps

SPRING 2016SMPS CENTRAL FLORIDA 3

This has been an exciting year for Marketing Mechanics! This past May, SMPS Member K.C. Cali, Executive Coordinator at Blue Cord Design and Construction, presented a seminar called “Make it Pretty.” She taught attendees that a proposal’s packaging and appearance makes a huge impact on how it is received. She prepared attendees with information on how to convey this message tactfully to principals. She also taught attendees to communicate what you want to say to the client before they even open the proposal. The event was highly attended and a great success. K.C. received excellent reviews and it was a great opportunity for a fellow SMPS Central Florida Chapter member to showcase her talent and inspire her peers.

Additionally, Marketing Mechanics has been utilizing the SMPS Central Florida Chapter’s Lending Library and hosting webinars. The March webinar, Raising the “WOW!” Factor: How to Create Proposals that Truly Set You Apart by David Stone, explained to attendees how to:• Develop a project-specific capture

plan• Create a smack-me-between-the-

eyes first impression• Use storytelling to grab and keep

their attention• Transform technical writing into

persuasive prose• Learn to not gloat obnoxiously when

your hit rate doubles

The June Marketing Mechanics Webinar titled Relationships Matter presented by Wally Hise, P.E., Vice President at HDR, shared techniques to promote client retention and build strong relationships. Additionally, he explained how to effectively communicate to clients, gave some tools for client retention, and explained relationship building behaviors to develop.

‘Wow,’ Marketing Mechanics!

Moderator Thad Seymour led us through a discussion of major infrastructure projects, funding for such massive undertakings, our speakers vision for future projects and more. As population driven growth continues to shape Florida, the reality of funding to support that growth is an ongoing challenge. Major infrastructure projects such as the Ultimate I-4, expansion of the Orlando

Sixteen members of the SMPS Central Florida’s mentorship program graduated in style Friday, June 3. The program lasting nine months provided both the mentors and protégés with greater industry and professional knowledge, and new friendships that will continue long past this program.

The ceremony was held at the new Orlando Performing Arts Center with one of Orlando’s most respected leader and businesswoman as the

of attendees looking to leverage their companies directly to the developer and/or client. It was a very successful turn out, tapping into a market that is still very hot in Central Florida. Many thanks to all those who came out.

keynote speaker, president and CEO Kathy Ramsberger. She shared her thoughts and approach to leadership, the importance of building effective teams, and inspired us to strive for greatness in everything we do. Ms. Ramsberger signed her favorite book for everyone, A Message To Garcia, and the morning finished with a “behind the curtains” tour of the Arts Center, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We look forward to welcoming the next mentorship class in January 2017.

Congratulations, Graduates!

Our keynote for the day, Roy Reid of Adventist Health System, shared a step-by-step outline for developing a powerful story and message. His presentation was full of emotionally appealing stories that tugged at your heart strings and hit his message home.

One of the highlights of the day was Susan Murphy, aka “Bossy Murph” who used humor, eye contact, and intentional movement to demonstrate proven skills in communicating and presenting. A favorite throughout the A/E/C industry for her high-spirited and fun approach to learning, Susan works nationwide helping architects, engineers and construction firms hone their presentation and interview skills.

Suzanne Bain and Zachary cheek of SPL Seminars rounded out the day with a thought provoking discussion on managing millennials in the workplace. The interactive session used fictional scenarios and role play to inspire insightful conversation and offer effective ways to work with professionals of different generations.

All in all, this year’s Education Event was one of our best providing exceptional content, engaging speakers, and tangible takeaways! How will we ever top this next year???

On Thursday, April 14, 2016, SMPS Central Florida held its annual “Spring Ahead” Education Event at the Westin in Lake Mary. Over 80 marketing and business development professionals gathered to learn from a host of inspiring speakers addressing new trends and hot topics for the modern day marketer.

During the morning session, Tim Asimos, CPSM, Vice President and Director of Digital Innovation at circle S studio focused his presentation on the evolution of marketing and staying relevant in a modern world where technology, analytics and strategy are key. Tim emphasized the “think outside the AEC box” approach and offered insightful tips and resources to become a more well rounded marketer in a digital age.

Cyndi Gundy, Orlando’s superstar marketing and business development consultant, helped to further Tim’s message by presenting on hot topics in A/E/C marketing. Cyndi hit all the marks covering intentional marketing, long engagements, content marketing, marketing strategy, and social presence, all the things a marketer needs to know in order to effectively market our firms.
