FIESTA DEL RÍO Celebrating the Tijuana River Estuary & its Cultures: Where Nature & Nations Meet Background Fiesta del Río 2012 is a celebration of the peoples, cultures, history, and environment of the San Diego/Northern Baja region surrounding the Tijuana River Estuary, an area that in the past has been home to Kumeyaay, Spanish and Californio alike. Fiesta del Río is an annual event, attracting over 1,500 people, celebrating National Estuaries Day and National Wildlife Refuges Week. The Fiesta celebrates the heritage, pride, and cultures of Mexico and the United States. Event Goals Promote the history & heritage of the Tijuana River Estuary and South Bay Bring people, business, local & state governments together Highlight the cultures, foods, music & history of this booming region Raise awareness of the estuary’s ecological value and its priceless natural resources. Highlight the Reserve’s restoration successes and its value to the entire community Promote the significant cultural resources that the Reserve protects Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (Tijuana Estuary) A rich biological area where the river meets the sea, and where two countries come together, the Tijuana Estuary is located on the U.S. side of the border. The U.S. side represents only 1/4 of the total watershed, with the remainder located in Mexico, from Tecate in the East to Tijuana in the West. Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park are within the Reserve. The Reserve has several partners in Mexico and the cities of Tecate and Tijuana serve on its Advisory Council. The Reserve is a Wetland of International Importance, designated by the United Nations Ramsar Convention due to its importance to migratory birds. Imperial Beach On Sunday, September 9, 2012 the theme will be “Celebrating the Tijuana Estuary and its Cultures: where nature and nations meet.” We chose this theme to celebrate the 30 th birthday of the Reserve. Imperial Beach Pier Plaza will host a variety of entertainment such as Ms. Smarty Plants with Wetland Wonders, Californio period and The Paul Cannon Band beach rock music, with northern Kumeyaay musicians; tours of the Reserve provided by Tijuana Estuary’s biologists; wetland themed activities and games for families and children; and booths featuring Reserve scientists, Think Blue San Diego, Living Coast Discovery Center, and native Kumeyaay arts and crafts.
