Lieutenant Commander KSJ McConnell RNR (1926 – 2014)

In 1938, at the age of 14, he attended the naval school upon HMS Worcester,he became a midshipman on the fast cruiser HMS Cumberland. In October1941, HMS Cumberland joined the 1st Cruiser Squadron Home Fleetescorting the Arctic convoys until January 1944. Later the same year he wastransferred on HMS Cumberland to the Far East, where he remained for twoyears assisting on raids on Northern Sumatra. He was accordingly awardedthe Burma Star, 39-45 Star and Pacific Clasp 39-45 medals.

After the War ended, he remained in the Far East and after two years returnedto the UK where he remained in the Royal Navy Reserves for many yearsreaching the rank of Lt Cmdr. One of the more interesting parts of his Navalservice career was that he was one of the first experimental divers.

As part of the family pipe tobacco manufacturing business he spent time inZimbabwe in the 1950s learning about the growing of tobacco and graduallylearnt to speak fluent Shona. Upon his return to the UK, after training as anaccountant, he worked with his eldest brother running the business untilretiring in 1989.

A keen collector with a good eye for items of nautical and marine history, hebecame a familiar face in many of the antique shops, fairs and sales roomsall along the South coast where over the following twenty years he indulgedhis passion and built his collection buying the very best that he could find.

All items marked with the Ω symbol are from this estate.
