February 17, 2010 Dear parents of 5th/6th grade advanced math students, On February 25, the students in advanced math will be going to Alley Cats in Arlington to collect data. The children will bowl and keep track of their scores. They will use this personal data to calculate various statistics like mean, median, mode and range and make graphs of their performance using Microsoft Excel. We will leave campus at 10:15 and return by 12:20. A pizza lunch and drinks will be provided. Students must be in uniform. I hope the children find this activity to be fun while applying the concepts they have learned recently in math class. Please feel free to call if you have any questions. Regards, Charlotte Wiseman Valerie Davis

April 1, 2010 Dear Parents of honors 5th/6th grade math students, On April 8, the students in 6th grade honors math will travel to The Ball Park in Arlington for a 1:05 baseball game against the Blue Jays. This field trip is in conjunction with their math class. The students will apply their knowledge of statistics to “keep the stats” on the players during the game and then use a spreadsheet to investigate the data further. The procedure for the day will be as follows: We will leave campus at 10:30 and return by 3:30. Please have your child bring a sack lunch and drink to school as we will eat lunch prior to entering the stadium. The children may bring money to purchase limited items from the vendors during the game, and they may wear a red T-shirt and jeans to school. We are very excited about this opportunity for the children to apply their math skills. We look forward to a great day at the ballpark! Sincerely, Charlotte Wiseman
