What is the exhibition? Body Worlds Decoded is an exhibition of real human bodies, including graphic exhibits that show some nudity and specimens of the human reproductive system as well as internal body systems. Body Worlds Decoded is different from all previous Body Worlds exhibitions in that it adds an augmented reality component allowing guests to see virtual content and stories that go along with the specimens. Where did the bodies come from? All of the bodies are people who, prior to their death, decided to donate their bodies to the study of human anatomy and be a part of this unique educational exhibition. The donors’ contributions of their bodies will help others learn about the structure and function of human bodies for years to come. The bodies on display in Body Worlds Decoded have been preserved in a process called plastination, which infuses the body’s tissues with plastic. The final products of this unique preservation process are called plastinates. Why should my child see this? The exhibition is designed to show and teach us what our bodies look like, both inside and out, and how they function as living, breathing machines. Each area focuses on a particular body system, showing us just how amazing our bodies are and how easily they can be affected by things such as sports injuries, smoking or poor eating. Plastinates within the exhibition show details of locomotion and the digestive, nervous, respiratory, reproductive and cardiovascular systems. What if I don’t want my child to see this? If you feel that this exhibition is not appropriate for your child, please tell his or her teacher before the date of your field trip. If you would like to know more before sending your student to the exhibition, please go to thetech.org/bodyworldsdecoded.
