Seladang (Bos gaurus) behavior
There are two centres in Peninsular Malaysia that has captive and breeding programmes for the seladang (Bos gaurus). These centres include the Sungkai Centre and the Jenderak Selatan Centres for Selandang Conservation. In this field trip you will have the chance to visit either one of the centres to view the seladang, partake in some seladang feeding activity, have discussions with rangers and view the seladang museums. Initially, there will be an introductory talk on the seladang by officers of the centres.
Observations and questions to be recorded/asked on the seladang at the centres:o Feeding/Foraging behavioro Aggressive behavioro Social behavioro Reproductive behaviouro morphological differences between the adult male and female
(Note that the above are behaviours in captivity)
In your report on the seladang include the following:o World distribution and distribution in Malaysia for the seladango Management and conservation practices/strategies of the seladang in Malaysiao Seladang Morphologyo Breeding programmes in Malaysia and how they are carried out
In your report also include seladang behavior in the wild with respect to:o Foraging & Feedingo Aggression & Territorialo Social o Reproduction & Courtship
Give your opinion on the current management and conservation practices and how you would suggest improving these practices. Two reports on the seladang will be given as reference1,2.
