Abels irreducibility theorem
In mathematics, Abels irreducibility theorem, a eld theory result described in 1829 by Niels Henrik Abel,[1]asserts that if (x) is a polynomial over a eld F that shares a root with a polynomial g(x) that is irreducible over F,then every root of g(x) is a root of (x). Equivalently, if (x) shares at least one root with g(x) then is divisibleevenly by g(x), meaning that (x) can be factored as g(x)h(x) with h(x) also having coecients in F.[2][3]
Corollaries of the theorem include:[2]
If (x) is irreducible, there is no lower-degree polynomial (other than the zero polynomial) that shares any rootwith it. For example, x2 2 is irreducible over the rational numbers and has
p2 as a root; hence there is no
linear or constant polynomial over the rationals havingp2 as a root. Furthermore, there is no same-degree
polynomial that shares any roots with (x), other than constant multiples of (x).
If (x) g(x) are two dierent irreducible monic polynomials, then they share no roots.

[3] This theorem, for minimal polynomials rather than irreducible polynomials more generally, is Lemma 4.1.3 of Cox (2012).Irreducible polynomials, divided by their leading coecient, are minimal for their roots (Cox Proposition 4.1.5), and allminimal polynomials are irreducible, so Coxs formulation is equivalent to Abels. Abhyankars inequality
Abhyankars inequality is an inequality involving extensions of valued elds in algebra, introduced by Abhyankar(1956).If K/k is an extension of valued elds, then Abhyankars inequality states that the transcendence degree of K/k is atleast the transcendence degree of the residue eld extension plus the Q-rank of the quotient of the valuation groups.

Chapter 3
Additive polynomial
In mathematics, the additive polynomials are an important topic in classical algebraic number theory.
3.1 DenitionLet k be a eld of characteristic p, with p a prime number. A polynomial P(x) with coecients in k is called anadditive polynomial, or a Frobenius polynomial, if
P (a+ b) = P (a) + P (b)
as polynomials in a and b. It is equivalent to assume that this equality holds for all a and b in some innite eldcontaining k, such as its algebraic closure.Occasionally absolutely additive is used for the condition above, and additive is used for the weaker condition thatP(a + b) = P(a) + P(b) for all a and b in the eld. For innite elds the conditions are equivalent, but for nite eldsthey are not, and the weaker condition is the wrong one and does not behave well. For example, over a eld oforder q any multiple P of xq x will satisfy P(a + b) = P(a) + P(b) for all a and b in the eld, but will usually not be(absolutely) additive.
3.2 ExamplesThe polynomial xp is additive. Indeed, for any a and b in the algebraic closure of k one has by the binomial theorem
(a+ b)p =
pXn=0
p
n
anbpn:
Since p is prime, for all n = 1, ..., p1 the binomial coecient (pn) is divisible by p, which implies that
(a+ b)p ap + bp mod p
as polynomials in a and b.Similarly all the polynomials of the form
np (x) = xpn
are additive, where n is a non-negative integer.

4 CHAPTER 3. ADDITIVE POLYNOMIAL
3.3 The ring of additive polynomialsIt is quite easy to prove that any linear combination of polynomials np (x) with coecients in k is also an additivepolynomial. An interesting question is whether there are other additive polynomials except these linear combinations. The answer is that these are the only ones. One can check that if P(x) and M(x) are additive polynomials, then so are P(x) + M(x) and P(M(x)). These implythat the additive polynomials form a ring under polynomial addition and composition. This ring is denoted
kfpg:
This ring is not commutative unless k equals the eld Fp=Z/pZ (see modular arithmetic). Indeed, consider the additivepolynomials ax and xp for a coecient a in k. For them to commute under composition, we must have
(ax)p = axp;
or ap a = 0. This is false for a not a root of this equation, that is, for a outside Fp:
3.4 The fundamental theorem of additive polynomialsLet P(x) be a polynomial with coecients in k, and fw1;:::;wmgk be the set of its roots. Assuming that the roots ofP(x) are distinct (that is, P(x) is separable), then P(x) is additive if and only if the set fw1;:::;wmg forms a group withthe eld addition.

Chapter 4
Adjunction (eld theory)
In abstract algebra, adjunction is a construction in eld theory, where for a given eld extension E/F, subextensionsbetween E and F are constructed.
4.1 DenitionLet E be a eld extension of a eld F. Given a set of elements A in the larger eld E we denote by F(A) the smallestsubextension which contains the elements of A. We say F(A) is constructed by adjunction of the elements A to F orgenerated by A.If A is nite we say F(A) is nitely generated and if A consists of a single element we say F(A) is a simple extension. The primitive element theorem states a nite separable extension is simple. In a sense, a nitely generated extension is a transcendental generalization of a nite extension since, if the generatorsin A are all algebraic, then F(A) is a nite extension of F. Because of this, most examples come from algebraicgeometry.A subextension of a nitely generated eld extension is also a nitely generated extension.[1]
4.2 NotesF(A) consists of all those elements of E that can be constructed using a nite number of eld operations +, -, *, /applied to elements from F and A. For this reason F(A) is sometimes called the eld of rational expressions in Fand A.
4.3 Examples Given a eld extension E/F then F() = F and F(E) = E. The complex numbers are constructed by adjunction of the imaginary unit to the real numbers, that is C=R(i).
4.4 PropertiesGiven a eld extension E/F and a subset A of E, let T be the family of all nite subsets of A. Then
F (A) =[T2T
F (T )
In other words the adjunction of any set can be reduced to a union of adjunctions of nite sets.

6 CHAPTER 4. ADJUNCTION (FIELD THEORY)
Given a eld extension E/F and two subsets N, M of E then K(M N) = (K(M))(N) = (K(N))(M). This shows thatany adjunction of a nite set can be reduced to a successive adjunction of single elements.

Chapter 5
Algebraic function eld
In mathematics, an (algebraic) function eld of n variables over the eld k is a nitely generated eld extension K/kwhich has transcendence degree n over k.[1] Equivalently, an algebraic function eld of n variables over k may bedened as a nite eld extension of the eld k(x1,...,xn) of rational functions in n variables over k.
5.1 ExampleAs an example, in the polynomial ring k[X,Y] consider the ideal generated by the irreducible polynomial Y2X3 andform the eld of fractions of the quotient ring k[X,Y]/(Y2X3). This is a function eld of one variable over k; it canalso be written as k(X)(
pX3) (with degree 2 over k(X) ) or as k(Y )( 3
pY 2) (with degree 3 over k(Y ) ). We see
that the degree of an algebraic function eld is not a well-dened notion.
5.2 Category structureThe algebraic function elds over k form a category; the morphisms from function eld K to L are the ring homo-morphisms f : KL with f(a)=a for all ak. All these morphisms are injective. If K is a function eld over k of nvariables, and L is a function eld in m variables, and n>m, then there are no morphisms from K to L.
5.3 Function elds arising from varieties, curves and Riemann surfacesThe function eld of an algebraic variety of dimension n over k is an algebraic function eld of n variables over k. Twovarieties are birationally equivalent if and only if their function elds are isomorphic. (But note that non-isomorphicvarieties may have the same function eld!) Assigning to each variety its function eld yields a duality (contravariantequivalence) between the category of varieties over k (with dominant rational maps as morphisms) and the categoryof algebraic function elds over k. (Note that the varieties considered here are to be taken in the scheme sense; theyneed not have any k-rational points, like the curve X2+Y2+1=0 over R.)The case n=1 (irreducible algebraic curves in the scheme sense) is especially important, since every function eld ofone variable over k arises as the function eld of a uniquely dened regular (i.e. non-singular) projective irreduciblealgebraic curve over k. In fact, the function eld yields a duality between the category of regular projective irreduciblealgebraic curves (with dominant regular maps as morphisms) and the category of function elds of one variable overk. The eldM(X) of meromorphic functions dened on a connected Riemann surfaceX is a function eld of one variableover the complex numbers C. In fact, M yields a duality (contravariant equivalence) between the category of compactconnected Riemann surfaces (with non-constant holomorphic maps as morphisms) and function elds of one variableoverC. A similar correspondence exists between compact connected Klein surfaces and function elds in one variableover R.

8 CHAPTER 5. ALGEBRAIC FUNCTION FIELD
5.4 Number elds and nite eldsThe function eld analogy states that almost all theorems on number elds have a counterpart on function elds ofone variable over a nite eld, and these counterparts are frequently easier to prove. (For example, see Analogue forirreducible polynomials over a nite eld.) In the context of this analogy, both number elds and function elds overnite elds are usually called "global elds".The study of function elds over a nite eld has applications in cryptography and error correcting codes. For example, the function eld of an elliptic curve over a nite eld (an important mathematical tool for public key cryptography)is an algebraic function eld.Function elds over the eld of rational numbers play also an important role in solving inverse Galois problems.
5.5 Field of constantsGiven any algebraic function eld K over k, we can consider the set of elements of K which are algebraic over k.These elements form a eld, known as the eld of constants of the algebraic function eld.For instance, C(x) is a function eld of one variable over R; its eld of constants is C.
5.6 Valuations and placesKey tools to study algebraic function elds are absolute values, valuations, places and their completions.Given an algebraic function eld K/k of one variable, we dene the notion of a valuation ring of K/k: this is a subringO of K that contains k and is dierent from k and K, and such that for any x in K we have xO or x1O. Each suchvaluation ring is a discrete valuation ring and its maximal ideal is called a place of K/k.A discrete valuation of K/k is a surjective function v : KZu{} such that v(x)= i x=0, v(xy)=v(x)+v(y) andv(x+y)min(v(x),v(y)) for all x,yK, and v(a)=0 for all ak\{0}.There are natural bijective correspondences between the set of valuation rings of K/k, the set of places of K/k, andthe set of discrete valuations of K/k. These sets can be given a natural topological structure: the ZariskiRiemannspace of K/k. In case k is algebraically closed, the Zariski-Riemann space of K/k is a smooth curve over k and K isthe function eld of this curve.

Algebraic number eld
In mathematics, an algebraic number eld (or simply number eld) F is a nite degree (and hence algebraic) eldextension of the eld of rational numbersQ. Thus F is a eld that containsQ and has nite dimension when consideredas a vector space over Q.The study of algebraic number elds, and, more generally, of algebraic extensions of the eld of rational numbers, isthe central topic of algebraic number theory.

6.1.1 Prerequisites
Main articles: Field and Vector space
The notion of algebraic number eld relies on the concept of a eld. A eld consists of a set of elements togetherwith two operations, namely addition, and multiplication, and some distributivity assumptions. A prominent exampleof a eld is the eld of rational numbers, commonly denoted Q, together with its usual operations of addition etc.Another notion needed to dene algebraic number elds is vector spaces. To the extent needed here, vector spacescan be thought of as consisting of sequences (or tuples)
(x1, x2, ...)
whose entries are elements of a xed eld, such as the eld Q. Any two such sequences can be added by adding theentries one per one. Furthermore, any sequence can be multiplied by a single element c of the xed eld. These twooperations known as vector addition and scalar multiplication satisfy a number of properties that serve to dene vectorspaces abstractly. Vector spaces are allowed to be innite-dimensional, that is to say that the sequences constitutingthe vector spaces are of innite length. If, however, the vector space consists of nite sequences
(x1, x2, ..., xn),
the vector space is said to be of nite dimension, n.
6.1.2 Denition
An algebraic number eld (or simply number eld) is a nite degree eld extension of the eld of rational numbers. Here its dimension as a vector space over Q is simply called its degree.

6.2 Examples The smallest and most basic number eld is the eldQ of rational numbers. Many properties of general numberelds, such as unique factorization, are modelled after the properties of Q.
The Gaussian rationals, denoted Q(i) (read as "Q adjoined i"), form the rst nontrivial example of a numbereld. Its elements are expressions of the form
a+bi
where both a and b are rational numbers and i is the imaginary unit. Such expressions may be added, subtracted, andmultiplied according to the usual rules of arithmetic and then simplied using the identity
i2 = 1.
Explicitly,
(a + bi) + (c + d
