FOREWORD

Man made machine. Now machine intends to unmakeman. Hurnan intelligence gathered from all quartersof our theater of operations confirms the graveseverity of our present situation. Reports numberin the thousands, all of them detailing atrocitiesonly made possible by the emotionless effi.ciencyof our enemy: concent.rat.Lon camps and death squads;surgical experime_ntation. Undoubtedly you haveheard others tell these stories; you may have someof your own.

Were. thi.s a conventional war ,one waged against aflesh-and-blood enemy, . Imight speak to you of dutyand honor; of patriotism and the nobility ofsacrifice. Instead, I must speak of survival, notonly your own or even that of your family or our

<, country, but .instead the survave 1of~ humanity._. These are the stakes of our war.

- -Never before in histor-y as a species have we eveR-faced sw;::ha dire struggle. There can be no partialvictory. We will either achieve total victory orsuffer total annihilation. What will ultimatelymake the difference is you.

Your training will carry you only so· £ar: it ~s

useless without courage and the will to fi.ght. Theenemy may seem incomprehensible. You will understandhim. He may appear invulnerable. You will defeatJt Thle_human r~ci/Pends on you.

T he Operational EnvironmentA mix of ongoing combat operations and enemy sabotagehas transformed even familiar locations into harsh, unpredictable operational environments.

The remnants of utili ty service,s are of p'articul_arconcerns:

• B roken gas mains expel flammable furnes, andone errant bullet could transform a city ~treetinto a fiery conflagration.

• S hattered water lines and sewer drains haveflooded entire neighborhoods with raw sewageand stagnant water, a perfect vector fordisease and a potential contaminant for any

~ource of potable water. ~• A lthough the majority of our nation's electrical

grid has been rendered-in_operable, in someareas occasional powe.r surges continue t..o~traverse downed power lines, posing great riskto personnel and equipment.

(

Architectural damage and structural instability:

• Partially collapsed buildings and tunnelsabound i n t he c cm ba t e nv ir or un en t.E ve n a pp ar en tl ystable structures may be riddled with minutefault lines due to kinetic shock associated 'with bombs and strafing from heavy caliberweapons. Even a very small amount of additionalstress could cause a complete collapse.

Wild animals and human survivors:• A ccording to scattered intelligence reports,

our enemy has either ignored or activelyavoided harming indigenous wild animals, aswell as abandoned pets. Na~ural predators suchas wolve~, bears and. even mountain lions havebeen observed stalking the perimeters of once

The enemy uses a variety of specialized ordnances, some of which you may encounter during your service.

- While many of these are likely familiar from pr iorhistorical conflicts - thermal and flechette

'"Pluggers"Classification: S elf-Guided A rtillery, Multi-Phase.Primary Combat Role: Anti-PersonnelDescription: Launched from enemy artillery pieces

} miles a,way from the battlefield, Pluggers can land-. behind allied lines with little to no advencewarning, save for the unmistakable whistling oftheir approach. While this sound can be demoralizingto new troops, leadership should recognize it forthe warning that it is and use the precious secondsbefore impact to guide their men and women toshelter. A lthough small, these fist-sized projectiles.

~ can cause massive casualties among the unprepared •

• Upon surface impact, Pluggers launch an array of'blasting anchors, small hooks that secure themsecure.ly to th~_Q.L..Qund. Following successfulanchor Lnq and- stabilization, the Plugger enters ..•into its target acquisition phase, utilizing itsadvanced'sensors to locate nearby human beings.Upon a positive identification, the Plugger'launchesa small, high speed projectile that begins burrowing

~ impact. Death is usually instantaneous, and thet ,entire journey from entry point to heart typically ~~, oeeurs in 45 3econds or less.

While Plugger strikes to the torso or head are#" always fatal, in the event of an impact with an~ arm or leg, death can sometimes be averted by1 amputation, provided that the procedure is performed

immediately. While a battlefield amputation offersits own commensurate risks (blood loss, infection),foregoing the procedure is invariably fatal. Underideal circ~tances this procedure will be performed
