COACHING THE EXTRA POINT AND FIELD GOAL TEAM

I would like to thank the WFCA for the opportunity to share some football thoughts withthe greatest organization in the country.

RULES TO KNOW ABOUT THE EXTRA POINT ATTEMPT ANDFIELD GOAL ATTEMPT

1. A missed field goal may be caught with a fair catch.

2. It is interference, and you can be penalized, if you interfere with an opportunity tocatch a missed field goal.

3. A field goal is the same as a punt. If it is blocked and does not cross the line ofscrimmage, both teams may recover and advance the ball. If partially blocked andit does cross the line of scrimmage, only the receiving team can advance the ball.

4. Even if the holder's knee is on the ground on extra point and field goal plays, he

may still run or pass the ball.

5. On extra point or field goal plays, if the snap is muffed, the ball can still be run,passed, or kicked.

6. On a missed extra point the ball is "DEAD."

7. A missed field goal fielded in the end zone by a member of the receiving teammay be advanced by the receiver or downed in the end zone for a touchdown.

8. A missed field goal kick outside the twenty yard line, the ball is placed from theoriginal line of scrimmage. If the ball is kicked inside the twenty yard ]ine the ballis placed on the twenty yard line.

9. We must have seven men on the line of scrimmage.

A. PROCEDURE

The Head Coach will tell the kicker/holder when he leaves the sideline whether ornot the possible fake is to be run. We can choose a single fake to look for or canelect to run any of the fakes if they are there.

The holder will confirm that we have 11 players on the field.

If a fake has been called, the holder now makes the final decision after hedetermines whether or not we can execute a fake based on the defensivealignment.

The holder will call out the following cadence, with each color representing adifferent option while number represents the time left on the 25 second clock.

"READY" "COLOR" Number... Color "Number" "Set" We will NOT use a Color. . . Number cadence when "May Day." The

cadence will be "READY. . . SET.'

We generally have the following options by game plan.I. Purple - KICK the ball

II. Silver - Execute the basic Screen fakeIII. Black - Execute the-basic Shovel fake

IV. Gold - Execute the game plan SPECIAL fake (Warhawk)

If we need to use "May Day Field Goal," on the last play of the game, the cadencewill simply be "Ready... Set."

B. ALIGNMENT AND STANCE

1. Guards: Preset position 3 point stance inside hand down. Your head is upand your butt is down. Feet are slightly wider than shoulder width with thetoe of the center. Feet are staggered with outside foot up, inside foot back,behind adjacent linemen. Eyes and full concentration are on the ball.

2. Tackles: Preset position with forearms on knees. Your head is up and yourbutt is down. Feet are wider than shoulder width with your inside foot splitthree inches from the outside foot of the guard. Feet staggered with outsidefoot up, inside foot back, behind adjacent lineman. Eyes and fullconcentration are on the ball.

3. Ends: Preset position with forearms on knees. Your head is up and your buttis down. Feet are wider than shoulder width with your inside foot split threeinches from the outside foot of the guard. Feet are staggered with outsidefoot up, inside foot back, behind adjacent lineman. Eyes and full

concentration are on the ball.

4. Wings: Line up at a 45 degree angle with the toe of your inside foot splittingthe butt of the End. You should just be able to reach out and slightly touchthe butt of the End with your near hand.

5. Holder: Back knee is down.

C. BLOCKING TECHNIQUE

1. Guards and Tackles: Take a 6-8 inch step to your inside placing foot behindnext blocker while driving your shoulder to the inside gap. Be sure to keepyour hips and shoulder parallel to the LOS. Block the inside gap area - donot predetermine a "man." Anchor both feet, keep a solid base, and makeyourself big. Deliver a blow to the inside gap rush with your inside hand.

and fend off a rush through the outside gap with your outside hand. Mentalapproach should be 2/3 inside, 1/3 outside. If not rush, lean back to outsidegap.

2. Ends: Take 6-8 inch step to your placing foot behind tackle. Immediatelystep back with outside foot to open up at a 45 degree angle. Block both gapareas don't pick a man. Anchor both feet, keep a solid base and makeyourself big. Deliver blow rush through both gaps. Make the defenders rushover the top of you. Don't lean forward and be pulled. Catch the rush andtopple over backwards taking the rushers with you if necessary.

3. Wings: Jab step up slightly with your inside foot and pivot to face away

from the LOS at a 45 degree angle. Anchor the inside foot as you step tobench press the outside rusher. Time up his rush as you extend your upperbody parallel to the ground but still make sure not to drag your inside foot.Effectively, your inside hip must secure your inside gap as you bench pressthe outside rusher wide off his course. If there is no rush your side, turn tosee ball kicked.

4. Holder: When the holder calls "SET" at the end of his cadence this meansthe entire team is ready and you can snap the ball when YOU are ready. Asyou snap, bring head and arms up quickly, keep a good solid base, and don'tallow yourself to be pulled forward or knocked back creating a seam in the

middle.

D. COVERAGE

1. Protect until the ball is kicked.

2. Although a missed PAT is a dead ball, a missed field goal is a live ball andmust be covered like a punt. Remember that the receiving team is entitled toa fair catch.

3. Coverage Lanes:

a. Center: Go to ball.b. Guards: Goalpost your side.c. Tackles: Two yards inside hash.d. Ends: Three yards inside hash.e. Wings: Numbers your side.f. Holder: Safety right.g. Kicker: Safety left.

1. "FIRE" will be called by the Holder and/or Kicker in the event of a bad or'fumbled snap. Whenever there is a choice, we will attempt to scramble andthrow to the right regardless of field position.

2. Lineman:a. Always alert. Cannot go downfield because of possible pass being

thrown.

3. Ends:a. Release VERTICAL for 6 yards as you peek back over your outside

shoulder to see which way the Kicker or Holder is sprinting.b. If he is coming-toward you, break on a 45 degree angle to the corner.c. If he is going away from you, adjust your course so that you can hold

up in the open area under the goalposts, either for a first down or atouchdown.

4. Wings:a. Release running into the flat looking for the football.b. If the ball is coming your way, continue to the flat at a depth of 6

yards of 1st down.c. If the ball is going the other way, stop and settle in an open area to be

an outlet.

5. Kicker and Holder:a. After "FIRE," then become a lead blocker from each other, blocking

the most dangerous pressure.
