Hon. President's RemarksIn presenting "Fiddler on the Roof", the InvernessOpera Company are giving the North of Scotlandthe premier presentation, as -this Musical was onlyreleased foil'Amateur Production in 1972.

There are always problems in producing ourAnnual Show, but this year we have had to overcomemany unforeseen difficulties. We have no theatre and,as a Company, we deeply regret the loss of thePlayhouse. We were fortunate to get the InvernessHigh School Hall and, with the utmost co-operation

of the Education Authorities, have attempted to create the atmosphere of a theatre - evento installing tiered seating. The Company have made the scenery props and costumes but, with rising oasts, it is more essential than ever to get more Associate Members. It is oneway YiOU can help the Company, but you can also help by supporting our Vice-President,Provost Smith, the Magistrates and Inverness Town Council in their new Theatre complexat Eden Court. It is most essential that the Capital of the Highlands should have a Theatre,so let us all help and see this civic dream become a reality,

At the last moment our Company had to face another crisis. Mr Tom Anderson, onmedical advice, has had to resign as Musical Director and at the very last minute Mr J.ohnWorth has come to our aid. He has directed many Musical Productions in Scotland andEngland, and we know he will do his best to maintain the standard set by the Companyin previous years. We are deeply indebted to him. Mrs Muriel McCulloch, the Companyaccompanist for a number of years, and who has also been in charge of music for OurSummer Shows, has been of immense help to the Company during this crucial time.

May I, in conclusion, Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Inverness OperaCompany, thank you all nor your continued patronage and support.

The action takes place in Anatevka, a small Jewish community in Russia, in the year 1905.Tradition plays a major part in dictating the way of life of the people. Marriages arearranged, mode of dress is unaltered for generations" and all respect the ritual of thedevout Jew.

TEVYE is a milkman with a family of five daughters. His own marriage with his wifeGOLDE was arranged, and now the three elder daughters, who are of marriageable age, hope that YENTa. the village matchmaker, willl be able to find them each the righthusband.

TZEITEL, the eldest daughter, is in love with MOTEL, a tailor, and she persuades himto ask Tevye for her hand, despite the fact that a more satisfactory match, financially, hasbeen arranged with the local widowed butcher, LAZER WOLF. Through Tzeitel's pleading,Tevye agrees to the betrothal, and is left with the problem nf explaining this major breakwith tradition to Golde. He does this through the medium of a fictitious nightmare (TheDream Sequence).

Tzeitel and Motel are married, but during the celebrations following the weddingceremony, the Russian Police arriveand ruin the occasion by demonstrating their anti-Jewishfeelings

HODEL, the second daughter, has fallen in love with PERCHIK, a young Jewish student, and eventually, despite a further break with tradition, this union is accepted by both Tevyeand Golde. Perchik is a reactionary and he is caught up by the political struggles of thepre-revolutionary era. He is sent away as a political prisoner, and Hodel leaves home insearch of her husband.

The third daughter, eRA vA, loves a young Russian gentile, called FYEDKA. Thissituation presents a break in tradition that even Tevye cannot accept. However, the twoare secretly married, and Tevye disclaims Chava as his daughter.

The political scene is a very uncomfortable one for the Jewish communities and, Anatevkaeventually succumbs to the threateneddestruction and possible massacre. The Jews have noalternative. but to move Ion, yet again, to try to find some peace and solitude. Perhaps inPoland. Perhaps in Amerioa.

The story ends as the villagers pack up their few belongings. to begin a journey with adoubtful destination ...
