1 PrefaceThe demand for scalable storage capacity and the increasing trend towards rack-based servers call for correspondingly compact and powerful backup systems that can ensure the necessary data security.

The FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem provides a flexible means of consoli-dating rack-based data security. The FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem makes it possible to install today's backup devices (such as LTO3 Ultrium, DDS Gen5, VXA-320, etc.) in a separate 19" housing. The FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem is available in different models for SCSI-, SAS-, or USB technology. Each I/O module has 4 ports for the connection of up to 4 servers and it has a power management for the remote on/off of a single drives or the complete system. The backup subsystem provides four 1.6"-high bays for this purpose. The backup subsystem is also ready to accommodate future backup devices.

The backup subsystem offers a simple, flexible and reasonably priced solution for avoiding backup constraints and enabling expansion.

The models are equipped with different input modules and cable chain variants.

The FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem has an integrated power supply unit. The FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem is cooled by a fan. The fan is monitored to ensure that it does not fall below the nominal speed.

In the 19" rack, the FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem occupies three height units (3 HU).

1.1 Concept and target groups for this manual

This operating manual describes how to install, set up and operate your backup subsystem.

This operating manual is intended for those responsible for installing the hardware and ensuring that the system runs smoothly. It contains all the infor-mation you need to put your FibreCAT TXF backup subsystem into operation.

To understand the various expansion options, you will need to be familiar with the fields of hardware and data transmission and you will require a basic knowledge of the underlying operating system.

2 Important informationIn this chapter you will find essential information regarding safety when working on your backup subsystem.

2.1 Safety instructions

I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual “Safety notes and other important information”.

This device meets the relevant safety regulations for IT equipment. If you have any questions about whether you can install the server in the intended environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service team.

V CAUTION!

● The actions described in this manual should only be performed by technical specialists.

● Equipment repairs should only be performed by service staff.

● Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any unautho-rized openings and improper repairs could expose the user to risks (electric shock, fire hazards) and could also damage the equipment.

● Please note that any unauthorized opening of the server will void the warranty and exempt the manufacturer from all liability.

● During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device (see section “Technical data” on page 8)

● If the server has been moved from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the machine.

Wait until the server has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the server if this requirement is not met.

V CAUTION!

● Only transport the server in the original packaging or in packaging that protects it from impacts and jolts.

● Check that the rated voltage specified on the device's ID plate is the same as the local line voltage.

● This device must only be connected to a power outlet for the rack's internal power supply using a tested and approved power cable.

● Route the cables in such a way that they do not create a potential hazard (make sure no-one can trip over them) and that they cannot be damaged. When connecting the device, refer to the relevant instructions in this manual.

● Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (lightning hazard).

● The system unit and the directly connected external backup subsystems should be connected to the same power supply distributor. Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example, the server is still running but the backup subsystem has failed during a power failure.

● Make sure that no objects (such as jewelry, paperclips, etc.) or liquids can get inside the device (risk of electrical shock, short circuit).

● In emergencies (e.g. damage to housings, power cables or controls or ingress of liquids or foreign bodies), immediately power down the peripheral devices, pull out the power plugs and notify your service department.

● Note that proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC 60950-1/DIN EN 60950-1) is guaranteed only if slot covers are installed on all vacant slots and/or dummies on all vacant bays and the housing cover is fitted (cooling, fire protection, RFI suppression).

2.2 Electrostatic sensitive device label

Modules with electrostatic-sensitive components

Systems and components that might be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD) are marked with the following label:

When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances:

● Remove the power plug before installing or removing components containing ESDs.

● You must always discharge yourself of static charges (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working.

● The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges.

● Only touch the components at the positions highlighted in green (touch points).

● Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component.

● Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the system unit as you install components.

● Place all components on a static-safe base.

I You will find a detailed description for handling ESD components in the relevant European or international standards (DIN EN 61340-5-1, ANSI/ESD S20.20).

All other equipment which is connected to this product must also have radio noise suppression in accordance with EC Guideline 89/336/EEC.

Products which meet this requirement are accompanied by a certificate to that effect issued by the manufacturer and/or bear the CE mark. Products which do not meet this requirement may be operated only with the special permission of the BZT (Bundesamt für Zulassungen in der Telekommunikation).

The system complies with the requirements of the EC directives 2004/108/EC regarding “Electromagnetic Compatibility” and 2006/95/EC “Low Voltage Directive”. This is indicated by the CE marking (CE = Communauté Européenne).

2.5 Rack installation instructions

● When connecting and disconnecting cables, observe the notes in the documentation for your system and the comments in chapter “Important notes” in the operating manual supplied with the rack. The operating manual is supplied with the corresponding rack.

● When setting up the rack, make sure that the anti-tilt mechanism is correctly fitted.

● If more than one unit is withdrawn from the rack at any one time there is a danger that the rack will tilt forward.

● The power supply to the rack must be installed by an authorized specialist (electrician).

● The rack must be connected to the power supply by an authorized specialist (electrician).

2.6 Notes on transportation

I Transport the backup subsystem in its original packaging or in other suitable packaging which will protect it against shock or impact.

Do not unpack it until all transport maneuvers are completed.If you need to lift or transport the backup subsystem, ask someone to help you.

Environmentally-friendly product design and development

This product has been designed in accordance with the Fujitsu Siemens Computers standard for “environmentally friendly product design and devel-opment”. This means that key factors such as durability, selection and labeling of materials, emissions, packaging, ease of dismantling and recycling have been taken into account.

This saves resources and thus reduces the harm done to the environment.

Energy-saving information

Devices that do not need to be constantly switched on should be switched off until they are needed as well as during long breaks and after completion of work.

Packaging information

Do not throw away the packaging. You may need it later for transporting the system. If possible, the equipment should only be transported in its original packaging.

Information on handling consumables

Please dispose of printer consumables and batteries in accordance with the applicable national regulations.

In accordance with EU directives, batteries must not be disposed of with unsorted domestic waste. They can be returned free of charge to the manufac-turer, dealer or an authorized agent for recycling or disposal.

All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a crossed-out garbage can). They are also marked with the chemical symbol for the heavy metal that causes them to be categorized as containing pollutants:

● Follow the safety instructions in chapter chapter “Important infor-mation” on page 11.

● The backup subsystem should not be subjected to any extreme environmental conditions (see section “Technical data” on page 8). Protect the backup subsystem from dust, humidity and heat.

● Make sure that the backup subsystem is acclimatized for the time indicated in this table before putting it into operation.

In table “Acclimatization time”, the temperature difference refers to the difference between the operating environment temperature and the temperature to which the backup subsystem was exposed previ-ously (outside, transport or storage temperature).

3.1 Installation steps

Ê Unpacking the backup subsystem (see next section “Unpacking the backup subsystem”).

Ê Mount the backup subsystem in the rack (see section “Installing/removing the backup subsystem in the rack” on page 21).

Ê If SCSI model: Set the SCSI bus addresses of the installed backup devices (see section “Connecting SCSI cables” on page 36).

Ê Connect the cables to the backup subsystem according to the desired (rack) configuration.

Ê Connect the backup subsystem to the mains voltage (see section “Connecting the power cord” on page 35).

Ê Start up the backup subsystem (see chapter “Starting up and operation” on page 39).

3.2 Unpacking the backup subsystem

V CAUTION!

If you need to lift or transport the backup subsystem, ask someone to help you.

You should retain the original packaging of the backup subsystem for possible further transport.

Ê Unpack all individual parts.

Ê Check the delivery for any damage during transport.

Ê Check whether the items delivered match the details on the delivery note.

Ê Check whether the first page of the guarantee booklet has been completed in full.

Notify your supplier immediately should you discover that the items delivered do not correspond to the delivery note.

3.3 Installing/removing the backup subsystemin the rack

V CAUTION!

● Please observe the safety information and notes on rack mounting in chapter “Important information” on page 11.

● Several people are needed to install / remove the backup subsystem in the rack.

● The rack can tip over when more than one unit is removed.

3.4 Rack requirements

The rack systems of the Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH (DataCenter Rack and PRIMECENTER Rack) support fully the installation of the PRIMERGY server systems and backup subsystems. The installation in rack systems of several other manufacturers (3rd-Party Rack) available at present is largely supported.

To accommodate the ventilation concept and ensure proper ventilation, any unused areas in the rack must be sealed using dummy covers.

The power is supplied via the multiple socket outlets fitted in the rack.

The main features of the Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH rack systems are:

PRIMECENTER Rack

– Telescopic rails or bearing rails screwed to the front.

The rails have a linear alignment feature to ensure that they can be adjusted to different rack depths.

– Enhanced cable management in the lateral rack area.

Rack requirements Installation

DataCenter Rack

– Telescopic rails screwed to the front (except in the rear left area, where a support bracket is used).

– Enhanced cable management in the lateral rack area.

The mounting of the rails in the different racks is described in the next sections.

Installation of the cable management is described in detail in the Technical Manual for the respective rack.

3rd party rack

The following general conditions apply to rack systems of several other manufacturers:

Installation Rack requirements

– Telescopic rails screwed to the front.

The rails have a linear alignment feature to ensure that they can be adjusted to different rack depths.

– Climatic conditions.

An air intake unimpeded to a large extent in the rack front and an air discharge in the rear cover are necessary for the ventilation of the installed device.

In general, the ventilation concept ensures that the necessary cooling is achieved by the horizontal self-ventilation of the installed devices (air flow from the front to the rear).

– Power supply:

For installation in 3rd party racks, you must ensure that the appropriate socket strips are present.

3.5 Installation in the PRIMECENTER Rack or DataCenter Rack

For installation in the PRIMECENTER Rack, one rack mounting kit with bearing rails and one rack installation kit with telescopic rails are supplied.

The following parts are required:

– Support bracket– One left and one right bearing rail or telescopic rail (mounted)– M5x10 screws with integrated plugwashers

I – Or, M5x10 screws with separate plugwashers can also be used. In this case, two plugwashers each must be fitted beforehand on the support uprights and the support bracket.

– General information is provided in the Technical Manual for the PRIMECENTER and/or DataCenter Rack.

3.5.1 Bearing rail variant

When mounting the left bearing rail in the PRIMECENTER/DataCenter Rack, the supplied support bracket must first be mounted on the rear left support upright flush with the bottom edge of the device.

3.6 Installation in 3rd party racks

If your rack matches the general conditions for 3rd party racks, you can use parts of the rack mounting kit delivered with the backup subsystem. The supplied support bracket and the cable management may not be required.

For mounting the server in a 3rd party rack the following parts from the rack mounting kit are necessary:

– One left and one right bearing rail or telescopic rail (mounted) – M5x10 screws with integrated plugwashers

Ê Refer to the original manual from the rack manufacturer for details of the mechanical installation and the climatic conditions.

V CAUTION!

When installing in 3rd party racks, it must be ensured that an air flow from the front to the back of the rack is guaranteed.

I A number of parts of the delivered rack mounting kit may not be compatible, because original parts of the 3rd party rack must be used.

3.7.2 Connecting the server

3.7.2.1 Connecting SCSI cables

Ê Shut down the server.

Ê You can assign up to four

68-pin SCSI ports on your backup subsystem (see figure “ports backup subsystem” on page 33). You must ensure that Channels A to D are assigned in the correct order.

Setting the SCSI ID

Set the SCSI ID (bus address) using the jumpers of the installed backup device.

The SCSI IDs must be unique (assigned only once in the SCSI string) and are freely selectable from SCSI ID 0 to SCSI ID 6 (SCSI ID 7 is always used by the host adapter).

I The defaut setting is for″point to point“ SCSI-ID 6 and for″daisy chain“ for drive 1 or 3 SCSI-ID 5 and for drive 2 and 4 SCSI-ID 6.

3.8 Instructions on connecting and disconnecting cables

V CAUTION!

The power plug must be pulled out!

Never connect or disconnect cables during thunderstorms.

When disconnecting a cable, always take hold of the plug. Never unplug a cable by pulling at the cable itself.

Connecting cables

Connect the cables in the order described below:

● Switch off all affected devices.

● Unplug all affected devices from the power supply.

Ê Mark the cables and make a note of the function of each cable. Always note the safety instructions in chapter “Important information” on page 11.

Ê Connect the power plugs to appropriately properly grounded power outlets.

Ê If the devices have an articulated cable guide, secure the cables to the artic-ulated cable guide with the cable ties.

Disconnecting cables

Disconnect the cables in the order described below:

Ê Turn off all power and equipment switches.

Ê Disconnect all power plugs from the power outlets.

Ê Disconnect all cables on the server and the backup subsystem.

5 Troubleshooting

5.1 Backup subsystem cannot be switched on

Ê Check the position of the power switch and, if necessary, move the switch to the "Remote" or "On" position (see also “Power switch” on page 40).

Ê Check the connections to the server and the mains connection.

Ê Boot the system unit again.

5.2 SCSI devices are not detected

If the backup subsystem is switched on late (e.g. by plugging in the power cable), the SCSI devices may not be detected when the system unit is booted.

I The setting „remote“ can avoid that the system is switched on too late

Ê Check the mains connection.

Ê Reboot the system unit.

5.3 Incorrect SCSI ID

The backup device does not respond with demanded SCSI ID, or there is an address conflict on the SCSI bus:

Ê Check the address jumper of the backup device involved. Refer to the documentation for the backup device for help.

The address jumpers of most backup devices are located on the rear of the device.

Ê Set the SCSI ID.

5.4 Fan failure

Ê Use the error LED in the control panel (see page 39) to determine whether the system fan or power supply fan has failed.

Ê Check that the ventilation slots are not covered.

Ê If the error occurs again, contact your service partner.

5.5 Replacing the backup device

Ê You switch off the backup device you wish to replace as follows:

– The power switch is in position I:

Switch the backup subsystem to the setting Remote by moving the power switch to position R (see page 40).

Switch off the server to which the backup device is connected or disconnect the related external cable to this server.

– The power switch is in position R:

Switch off the server to which the backup device is connected or disconnect the related external cable to this server.

Once you have successfully switched off the backup device, the related drive indicator (Drive Power 1...4) in the control panel goes out (see page 39).

I There are different possiblilities of configuration beween in the Input of the input module and the backup devices. The in factory setted standard configuration you can find in the section “Connecting the backup subsystem” on page 33. If you need an other configuraton please contact the service.

For the SCSI daisy chain configuration, two backup devices are connected internally to one SCSI cable. In this case, both backup devices must be switched off.

Ê Loosen the two screws on each side and remove the guide rails from the defective backup device.

Ê Screw the two guide rails on to the new backup device using two screws on each rail.

V CAUTION!

Use the screws that are supplied with the backup device. The old screws may be too long and therefore damage the backup device.

Ê Before installing a new SCSI backup device:

Set the SCSI ID and set the "Termination Power" jumper to the "Off" position.

Ê Connect the power supply cable and data cable to the backup device.

Ê Press inward on the two metal tongues of the EasyClick rails until the locking mechanism disengages.

Ê Remove the backup device from the slot.

V CAUTION!

Do not pull the cable chain any further once the black cable links have reached the front edge of the housing.

I When removing the device, the cable chain fastening disconnects from the guide rail as soon as it has disconnected completely.

Ê Loosen the two screws on each side and remove the guide rails from the defective backup device.

Ê Screw the two guide rails on to the new backup device using two screws on each rail.

V CAUTION!

Use the screws that are supplied with the backup device. The old screws may be too long and therefore damage the backup device.

Ê Before installing a new SCSI backup device:

Set the SCSI ID and set the "Termination Power" jumper to the "Off" position.

Ê Connect the power supply cable and data cable to the backup device.

V CAUTION

Make sure that the corresponding Power-LED on the front panel is OFF when you connect the cable section “Replacing the backup device” on page 42.

Ê Insert the backup device into the slot until you can attach the cable chain in the guide rail.

Ê Insert the couple part in the guide rail.

Ê Hold it in position with one finger and push the backup device into the slot until the couple part is inserted together with the guide rail.

Ê Now insert the backup device fully into the slot.

Ê Hook the front cover in place at the bottom and close it at the top.

Ê Turn the locking buttons vertically and press the locking buttons in the recess of the housing until they click into place.

Ê Connect the connector (on the rear side of the backup subsystem) of the added backup device with the server (not necessary for a daisy chain) see also section “Connecting the backup subsystem” on page 33.

Ê Activate the backup device by starting up the corresponding server.
