Fusion splicing and acceptance testing of a fibre link with an OTDR and light source and power meter. We analyse the data sheets as provided by the manufacturer of different fibre types used by current Telco's. Minimum 4 students per course. Please note that after completion of this course, a student will still have to attend follow-up courses to become a specialist in a specific discipline of optical fibre installations. Successful participants will receive a MerSETA accredited certificate Introduction to Optical Fibre Cable Installation, Splicing and Testing. Targeted at supervisors, planners and managers. Duration: 5 days Course Content: Optical Fibre Theory and Manufacturing (includes CD and PMD, MCVD, PCVD, OVD and VAD processes). Optical Fibre System and Switching Fundamentals (includes fundamentals of WDM, TDM and DWDM). Optical Fibre Cable Theory, Manufacturing and Type testing (deals with all underground and overhead cable types). Installation of Optical Fibre Cables in Underground and Overhead Routes. (Hauling into ducts, ploughing in, blowing into sub ducts and micro ducts, stringing on overhead routes. We show the students all the installation equipment). � Safety Precautions on Overhead Installations.� Fusion Splicing, Termination and Acceptance testing (Specific attention will be given to ADSS, ADKASH

and OPGW cable preparation, correct entry into splice closures and routing in splice cassettes, routinemaintenance testing on spare fibres in links).

� Project Management on Telecommunication Cable Installation Projects

� Advanced Optical Fibre Splicing and Testing Course content.(This is for students that are familiar with splicing andtesting or that have done the 5-day Introduction to OpticalFibre Cable Installation, Splicing and Testing course).Duration: 10 daysCourse Content:

� Optical Fibre Theory and Manufacturing (CD and PMD, MCVD, PCVD, OVD and VAD processes)� Optical Fibre Cable Theory, Manufacturing and Type testing (deals with all underground and overhead

cable types).� Fusion Splicing, Termination and Acceptance testing (Students will each make their own complete splice,

do acceptance testing on a link and learn how to compile a comprehensive completion report, they arealso welcome to bring their own equipment to use during the practical).

� Optical Fibre Cable Blowing Course. Duration: 3 daysCourse Content:

� Optical Fibre Theory (deals with different fibre types, MM & SM to assist installers with pre-& post- installation OTDR testing).� Optical Fibre Cable Theory (deals with different optical fibre cable types (Duct and micro duct cables),

standard Telkom cable designs and data sheets, cable manufacturing).� Handling of Cable drums (deals with the correct handling of optical fibre cable drums, loading,

transportation, off-loading and storing).� Cable Blowing Installation Equipment (Duct and micro cable Blowing machines, compressors, air coolers,

cable trailers, cable drum stands, cable fleeting trailers, hand tools needed, safety equipment, cablelubricants, sonic heads, mandrills, duct pressure test equipment).

� Different types of ducts (analyse different sub duct and micro duct types used by Telco's).� Cable blowing procedure (theory on correct cable blowing processes that must be followed, video on

blowing).� Cable blowing practical (candidates will get the opportunity to witness actual blowing tests and hands

on experience on the whole installation process with the correct equipment doing standard cable blowinginto sub ducts and micro cables into micro ducts as well as recovery of these cables.
