FOR

STRESS RELIEVING

• AM2 saturated with bitumen prolongs the surfacing lifetime by waterproofing the road seal.

• This prevents the ingress of water into the base layers thereby reducing rutting and potholes caused by a weakened substructure.

• Retards the possibility of reflective cracking and bridges small underlying cracks thereby reducing the resurfacing thickness.

• Accommodates a larger degree of surface deflection reducing overall maintenance costs.

Designing asphalt overlays with Fibertex AM2

Paving fabrics are widely used in both new road reflective cracking in the pavement. the lower part of the pavement by creating membrane system.

The waterproofing function prevents surface water from entering the bearing courses, wherstress relieving function is defined

“Paving fabrics, properly installed between an existing pavement surface and a new overlaya stress relieving function, as the bitumenmovements between the layers.”

Because of the above, Fibertex AM2 increases factor of 3.

Causes of reflective cracking in asphalt overlays:

Fibertex Geotextiles

Fibertex is manufactured from polypropylene staple fibres which are needle-punched. Fibertex is highly durable and resistant

to all natural occurring soil alkalis and acids.

Fibertex is manufactured from virgin polypropylene fibres added with HALS UV stabilizer.

Roll sizes: Roll length 100 lm x Roll width 5.2 m

Fibertex geotextiles are manufactured to quality assurance procedures.

Notes

1. The G value (Robustness) Geotextile Strength Rating classifies the robustness through the geometric mean calculated

from the Penetration Load (CBR Plunger Test) and the Puncture Resistance (Drop Cone Test).

G = √ L x h50 ,

L = Load (Newtons) on the CBR plunger test at failure as per test method SANS 10221-07

H50 = Drop Height (mm) required to make a 50 mm diameter hole as per test method AS 3706.5

2. The Bitumen Retention value is determined using a Penetration Grade 80/100 Bitumen

AM2 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:

Basic Equipment

• Hard bristle brooms.

• Squeegees.

• Spades.

• 25 litre buckets.

• Stanley knife or similar.

• Pneumatic tyre roller.

• Laydown machine (optional).

• Bitumen spray truck.

• Tipper truck.

• Chip spreader (optional).

• Mechanical rotary broom. Full Width under Seals and Asphalt

• The existing pavement surface, concrete or asphalt, is cleaned thoroughly to remove all weeds, dirt, oil, water and other impurities.

• Where necessary large holes and cracks are to be properly patched and leveled.

• Apply recommended polymer modified bitumen emulsion as per attached data sheet at a

temperature of 60°C and a nominal rate of 1.35 l/m². Depending on general surface

conditions the application demand can increase from between 0.1 and 0.5 l/m².

• Allow emulsion to break properly i.e. turn from brown to black.

• Apply the AM2 by unrolling fabric manually or with mechanical laydown machine, minimising the amount of wrinkles as much as possible by using the squeegees.

• Large folds or wrinkles must be cut, with extra bitumen being applied to the underside of the overlaps of 150mm min.

• Allow approximately 3 hours for the tack coat to dry and then roll with pneumatic tyre roller with 4 passes. Make sure the tyres of the roller have been cleaned with a solvent beforehand.

• Adjacent lanes must be sprayed with an approximate150mm overlap along the longitudinal AM2 edge.

• Transverse overlaps should be a minimum of 200mm.

• Apply asphalt overlay as per normal design procedure or apply a saturation coat at 0.6 l/m²

and allow to break. Apply an aggregate blinding layer as per COLTO, with 100% passing the 6.7mm sieve and not more than 10% passing the 2.36mm sieve and open to traffic.

• Proceed with conventional wearing course if applicable.

Overlaps Longitudinal overlaps should be a min. o f 10 cm and transverse overlaps approx. 20 cm.

Manual laying of Fibertex AM2 around corners will be required to be done in sections.
