Fiber reinforced Composites as Fixed pace !aintainer

Fixed space maintainers are space maintainers which are fixed or fitted onto theteeth. Space maintainers are employed to prevent this complication. In anterior region, esthetics is an important concern along with function and space management. Fiber-reinforced composite (FR! retained space maintainer solves all these purposesefficiently and effectively. In addition, the techni"ue is simple and the appliance is verycomfortable inside the oral cavity.

In my case report, the dentist used Fiber-reinforeced composite (FR! retainedspace maintainer. #his techni"ue is simple and the appliance is very comfortable insidethe oral cavity. $ere is a case of premature loss of anterior primary tooth which wasreplaced by FR retained esthetic functional space maintainer.

% &-year-old girl reported to the dental clinic with history of pain in the upperanterior tooth for ' days. #he pain was of severe and continuous type. #he parentsreported a bicycle fall at the age of three, i.e. a year bac. #he tooth was sore at thattime for a few days but symptoms subsided thereafter. )arents did not report to anydentists at the time of trauma.

*n clinical examination it was found that the maxillary right primary centralincisor was mobile (grade III! and was tender on palpation. Soft tissue examinationrevealed that the gingiva in relation to the affected tooth was red and swollensuggesting the presence of a peri-apical abscess in relation to the tooth. +xtraction ofthe tooth followed by a fixed esthetic functional space maintainer was decided as the

treatment plan for the tooth. %fter ' wees, the socet was found to have healeduneventfully.

% strip of FR resin was cut approximately of the length e"ual to the distancefrom the distal surface of the left upper central incisor to the distal surface of the rightupper lateral incisor% thin layer of fowable composite was applied over the etchedsurfaces of the abutment teeth and following this the FR strip was adapted over thepalatal surface extending from the distal surface of the maxillary right primary lateralincisor through the distal surface of the maxillary left primary central incisor. ow thetooth was prepared with the help of composite resin. #he complete tooth was preparedthrough free hand build up and then finishing and polishing of the tooth was done so as

to achieve morphological resemblance to the natural tooth.

)remature loss of a primary tooth is one of the common causes for malocclusionin permanent dentition. #his is mainly because the teeth adacent to the space createdby the loss of the deciduous tooth.eciduous tooth tend to drift into the space resultingin tooth material arch length discrepancy thereby predisposing the dentition tomalocclusion.#o solve this problem a number of space maintainers have beendesigned.
