It features an integrated gearchanging system and all functions are electronically controlled.     All the manual range-change and splitter gearboxes now featureVolvos patented servo synchro system (further refined in the newgearboxes) which reduces gearchanging forces by up to 50%. Thenew Volvo FH and FM also have an entirely new gearchanging sys-tem with cable-operated controls. It gives shorter and more distinctgear lever movements and low shift forces.     EASIER TO POWER ANCILLARY EQUIPMENTTHAN EVER BEFOREThere are engine-driven power take-offs with a direct-driven hydraulicpump for both the Volvo D12 andD9. The power take-off for the newVolvo D9 engine is powered directlyfrom the rear of the engine and thuspermits a high power output. Prop-shaft drive with an SAE flange isalso available as an alternative. Youcan also obtain high power on themove with a flywheel-driven powertake-off (FM12).   • The new Volvo FH and FM are available with an entirely newgearbox featuring a fully automatic gearchanging system and12 forward gears. It is the perfect choice for distribution and long-haul operations on good roads with gross combinationweights up to 44 tonnes.

    Full electronic control gives you considerable flexibility inswitching between automatic and manual gearchanging ifrequired. I-shift also improves safety levels and contributesto lower fuel consumption. In addition, it is about 70 kglighter than the corresponding manual gearbox.

    I-SHIFT INTELLIGENT GEARBOX

    4 I-shift

    AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BASED ON MANUAL GEARBOXI-shift is tomorrows automatic transmission, designedaround the manual splitter gearboxs simple anddependable mainshaft, lay shaft and reverse shaftconstruction. The aluminium base unit has three non-synchromesh gears and a synchromesh splitter gearwhich together with the range-change offers a similarsystem to the manual gearbox. Like our manual boxesI-shift features an oil filter, gear-driven oil pump, oilcooler (option) and auxillary steering pump for twinfront axles I-shift can accomodate a PTO andhydraulic retarder.

    The electronic system that governs gearchang-ing is well protected in a control housing that alsocontains the systems solenoid valves, operatingcylinders, shift forks, sensors and other functions,where gearchanging is carried out with the helpof compressed air.

    I-shift is 70 kg lighter than a correspondingmanual gearbox. Aluminium is used for the varioushousings: the bell housing, base and range unitcasing and control unit housing. The synchromeshsystem for the base gears has been replaced withelectronic control and there is no crawler gear in I-shift. The net effect is reduced weight.

    The drivers information display shows the variousgearchanging functions andindicates which gears areavailable at any givenmoment in time.

    TOTAL CONTROLThe gearchanging function is electronically integratedwith the trucks other system functions, and interactsfor instance with the engine and braking systems.

    You can choose between various control programsfor I-shift depending on your current needs. In additionto the standard program, there is a Fuel Economyprogram which is mainly intended to improve fuelconsumption, as well as a Comprehensive programwith additional functions. Fuel Economy gives you access to the followingfunctions: Automatic choice of starting ratio based on gross

    vehicle/combination weight and gradient. Intelligent control of power when you select the

    P program. Maximum engine braking effect through automatic

    down-changes (when you move the control leverbeside the steering wheel to its rearmost setting).

    THE GEAR LEVER ACCOMPANIES THE SEAT AS IT IS ADJUSTEDThe gear lever is attached directly to the driversseat. It is compact and neat, and is always in theright place, even if you move the seat. You canchoose between fully automatic shifts and manualgearchanges by activating a rocker switch on thegear lever. If you are driving in the automatic (A)mode, you can at any time move the lever back-wards to the Manual (M) mode and temporarilyblock further changes, or you can switch to manualgearchanges a feature you will appreciate in cer-tain operating conditions. The gear lever can also be conveniently tucked down out of the way to permit unobstructed movement inside the cab.

    At the press of a button, you can choose be-tween two modes E (Economy) and P (Perform-ance). E allows you to drive with maximum fueleconomy. With P, you exploit the engines higherrevs before changing gear, allowing you to accel-erate faster when conditions require.

    You can monitor the gearchanging functionon the drivers display, which shows which gearis currently engaged, the current driving programand which gears are available to select.

    MATCHED TO EACH INDIVIDUAL ENGINEThe I-shift gearchanging program is tailored for thepower output and performance profile of each indi-vidual Volvo engine, whether Volvo D9 or D12. Youare guaranteed perfect driveability and consistentfuel consumption. The I-shift gearbox also has lowerfrictional losses than its manual counterparts, whichin turn contributes to lower fuel consumption.

    INTEGRATED BRAKING FUNCTIONI-shift functions like an automatic transmission andpermits more relaxed driving in hectic operating con-ditions. The gearchanging system interacts with thetrucks other braking systems. If you have specifiedthe optional VEB (Volvo Engine Brake) you alwayshave access to high braking power, and with Volvoshydraulic compact retarder, braking power is even greater.

    The auxiliary brake (VEB, retarder) is operated viaa control stalk beside the steering wheel. You canchoose between various output levels, or you canselect automatic activation together with the truckswheel braking system when you press the brakepedal. The automatic setting also offers an additionalfeature when driving downhill the electronic systemtakes over, regulating the auxiliary brakes effect tosuit gradient and your selected speed.

    The gear lever also has a position which givesyou swift access to maximum braking effect sincethe I-shift system automatically changes down toraise engine speed (option).

    WIDE GEAR SPANGeartronic allows you to exploit the manual gear-boxs considerable freedom of choice and flexibility.You have access to 14 forward gears, including twocrawler gears that ensure smooth starts with hightrain weights. The entire gearchanging process isautomatic and is controlled extremely precisely byan electronic control unit that communicates withthe vehicles various systems. The electronic unit,the solenoid valves and operating cylinder are builtinto an aluminium housing above the gearbox.

    The gearchanging program, current gear andavailable ratios are all shown in the drivers display.

    SWIFT AND SECURE GEARCHANGESGeartronic changes gear quickly and smoothly dueto Volvos dual synchromesh system. The gear leveris marked with the same positions as in a manualgearbox. In addition you can select automatic gear-changing, reducing driver stress. There is a Holdfunction allowing you to remain in the selected gearfor a short while, for example you would not wantthe system to change up just before you reach thebrow of a hill or when you are rounding a sharpcorner. With the rocker switch on the side of thegear lever, you can fine-tune your progress bychoosing a higher or lower gear.

    CHANGE GEARS MANUALLY WHENEVER YOU WANTIf you want to maintain control over the gearchangingprocess you can use the gear lever just as you wouldon a manual gearbox with the difference that youdo not need to worry about pressing the clutch pedalsince there isnt one. The electronic system takescare of everything. Just move the gear lever gentlyto each respective gear position. Even when youdrive in automatic mode, you can at any time takeover and change gears manually.

    ECONOMY OR PERFORMANCENo matter which gearchanging method or drivingmode you use, the electronic system ensures thatthe gearchanging pattern is always gentle and thatengine revs and other parameters are within thepermitted limits. If you want to save fuel, drive in Emode, which utilises the engines Economy band inan optimum way. If the terrain is very hilly and youneed maximum power, you can engage the P mode,which utilises the engines upper rev band beforechanging gears.

    EXTRA-SAFEWith the Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) or Volvos hydrauliccompact retarder, you can control braking power witha stalk beside the steering wheel. If you need quickaccess to maximum braking effect, there is a stalksetting where the electronic system changes down thus raising engine revs to maximise the brakingeffect of the auxiliary brake. This technology naturallyextends the service life of the trucks foundationbrakes.

    8 Manual gearboxes

    EXCELLENT DRIVEABILITYVolvos range-change and splitter gearboxes arecompact, lightweight units. Precise and smoothgearchanges characterise Volvos gearboxes, whichfeature few base gear positions but many ratiosthanks to the range-change and splitter functions.In short, theyre all about giving you good driveability.The gears are well-matched and both the range-change and splitter gears are handled convenientlyvia rocker switches on the gear lever.

    With 9 and 14 forward gears you have one ortwo crawler gears respectively so you can always

    start off securely and smoothly with high gross com-bination weights. At the same time, the high ratiospan permits a fast rear axle ratio for fuel-efficientcruising. There is also a comprehensive series ofdependable gearbox-driven power take-offs tochoose from.

    SAFER AND MORE CONVENIENTIn the new Volvo FH and FM, the link-rod systemhas been replaced with a smooth, light-action cablelink. Gearchanging comfort is significantly improved.Lever movement is shorter and more distinct, and

    vibration and noise from the gear lever are a thing ofthe past. Together with Volvos servo synchro system,which has been further improved, and a smooth, lightaction clutch, you will note that gearchanging is bothlighter and more convenient than before. All the range-change and splitter gearboxes now have the latestsmart servo synchro system. The synchromesh func-tions at the instant the gears shift automatically con-verts radial torque into an axial force, which in turnassists the gear selection, therefore reducing theamount of driver effort in short, servo assistance.This technology reduces gearchanging forces by up to 50%.

    The gearbox is monitored by an electronic systemthat ensures that the gearchanging function alwaysoperates within permitted rev ranges and preventsunintentional gearchanges.

    LONG SERVICE LIFEThe gearboxes for the new Volvo FH and FM are theresult of more than 35 years of experience with range-change and splitter gearboxes. They are developeddown to the smallest detail to ensure high operatingreliability and long service life. All the gears in thebase unit are helical (which means many teeth areengaged at the same time) and they are case-hard-ened for high strength. The shafts are robustlydimensioned and they feature conical roller bearingswhich are constantly cooled and lubricated by theforced lubrication system. The oil is cleaned by afull-flow oil filter, and you can specify an optional oil cooler if operating and climate conditions are particularly tough.

    CONSIDERABLE FLEXIBILITYPowertronic comes into its own in heavy construc-tion operations and refuse operations. Gearchangesare normally handled entirely electronically. If you donot want the electronic system to perform the gear-changes, you can change gears manually via a but-ton on the gear selector. There are also two drivingmodes to choose between Performance (P) andEconomy (E) and you can at any time use a kick-down function which gives you access to maximumpower via the accelerator.

    The drivers display gives you total informationabout the system. You can see at all times whichgear is currently selected, which driving mode isactive and which gears are currently available.

    Powertronic also has a clutch-independent multiplate power take-off that provides 100 kWor 650 Nm.

    SUPERIOR OFF-ROAD ABILITYPowertronic has a hydraulic torque convertor whichdoubles torque in a short space of time and pro-vides smooth and gentle starts. Gearchanges takeplace quickly, without any interruption in power de-livery to the driven wheels, thanks to the use of hyd-raulic multi-plate torque convertor. You can quicklyaccelerate up to speed even if there is considerablerolling resistance, and you can take steep gradientsat high speed. Nor is it a problem to manoeuvre withextreme precision both forwards and in reverse atlow speed, or to reverse quickly over long stretches.

    SAFE PROGRESSAutomatic transmission means that progress issmoother. Secure starts and gearchanges withoutany interruption in power delivery also remove alarge element of stress from the driver. If you choosethe primary retarder, you always have access to highbraking effect, which can be regulated via a stalk

    If your operations involve tough conditions with many and frequentstops and starts, Volvos unique Powertronic automatic transmis-sion is the right choice. Gearchanges are electronically governedand there is a choice between 5 or 6 gears. Powertronic offerssuperb starting and driving properties on poor surfaces. You canspecify a primary retarder (option) which provides 300450 kWin continuous braking effect, even at low speeds.

    beside the steering wheel. You can choose betweenvarious levels of braking, or you can let the retarderengage automatically together with the wheel brakingsystem whenever you press the brake pedal.

    For maximum braking effect, the electronic systemcan automatically change down to raise engine revsand thus boost braking effect.

    The system also has an automatic setting thatallows you to maintain a constant speed when drivingdownhill. Set the retarder in automatic mode and theelectronic system will then take over and adjust brakingeffect to suit the selected speed and the gradient.

    LOWER RUNNING COSTSThe electronic system constantly ensures that all thefunctions operate optimally and keep within the rele-vant limits. There is no risk of over-revving, overload-ing or excessive temperatures. You always start offgently and gearchanges take place without any dis-ruption in power delivery to the wheels. This meansthat the powertrain is never subjected to shockloads, and that wear on all the powertrain compo-nents is minimised as are your repair costs.

    To save fuel, you should utilise the EconomyProgram (E) as often as possible. Here, all gear-changes take place based on the engines mosteconomical rev range. All the gears feature auto-matic direct lock-up, which in turn promotes lessfrictional losses.

    If you have selected the primary retarder, youwill also considerably extend the service life ofyour wheel brakes.

    ALWAYS TOP SAFETYIf you run normal long-haul operations, the retardersystem will handle 8085% of all braking and helpsensure that the wheel brakes maintain a low temper-ature. This in turn means you have access to the wheelbraking systems maximum braking capacity if youshould need it in a critical situation. You can usemaximum effect, 600 kW, for 1520 seconds. Brakingeffect declines gradually as temperature rises, downto about 400 kW which you can utilise continuously.

    The retarder system responds very swiftly.You have access to 90% of braking effect within 0.5 seconds. Activation is very smooth and gentlesince compressed air is utilised to regulate theamount of fluid in the retarder.

    With the stalk in automatic mode, you canengage automatic speed control when drivingon a downhill gradient.

    If you have specified one of Volvos automaticgearchanging systems I-shift or Geartronic youcan use their brake function and obtain maximumbraking effect since the electronic system willchange down as required.

    LOWER BRAKING SYSTEM COSTSUsed correctly, the retarder will take care of mostbraking. Both the brake pads/linings and discs/drumswill last far longer. There is also a limit on thermal fluc-tuation in the wheel brakes, which lowers wear sincehigh temperature means faster brake lining and padwear. What it all comes down to is that your runningcosts are lower with Volvos retarder system.

    12 Compact retarder

    With Volvos electronically controlled com-pact retarder, you always have access tohigh braking effect 400600 kW. Thisresults in more secure driving while at thesame time allowing you to increase averagespeeds. You can set the retarder systemto activate when you press the brake pedaland you can, for instance, allow the retarderto automatically modify the braking effectto suit the speed you want to maintain ona downhill gradient.

    Braking effect andfunction are convenientlycontrolled with the stalk.

    FLEXIBLE USEThe retarder and the engines exhaust brake interactto together to provide a high braking effect. The sys-tem is also fully integrated with the trucks wheelbraking system. A stalk beside the steering wheelallows you to select which system you want to use.The retarder can be controlled by the stalk or can beset to activate everytime you press the brake pedal.On the drivers display, you can see which retardersystem function is currently in operation.

    available as an option. The power take-off is installedas a separate unit between the engine and gearbox.It is driven directly from the engine and it is engagedvia a hydraulic disc clutch. You can choose flangedrive with a SAE1400 flange or direct drive of ahydraulic pump.

    POWER TAKE-OFF FOR POWERTRONICThe Powertronic transmission is suitable for a widetransport range in operations that require powerboth while driving and when stationary. Powertronichas a clutch-independent power take-off that givesyou high power outputs 100 kW, 650 Nm. ThePTO is mounted on the gearbox at 1 Oclock and isengaged with a hydraulic disc clutch (1000 r/min isthe maximum permitted engine speed at the momentof activation). Flange drive with an SAE1400 flangeor a direct drive hydraulic pump are available.

    ENGINE-DRIVEN POWER TAKE-OFFSThe new Volvo D9 engine permits a higher powertake-off output since drive is taken directly from therear of the engine. The power take-off is mounted at1 oclock (viewed from behind) and you can direct-drive a hydraulic pump with a DIN coupling or viaa flange, size SAE 1300 or 1400.

    While on the move, you can continuously obtain650 Nm and when stationary you have access to noless than 1000 Nm between 850 and 1200 r/min.

    Engine-driven hydraulic pumps fitted in Volvosproduction system are supplied with pipes, hosesand a temporary oil tank. Complete hydraulic systemswith a D-shaped 180 litre tank fitted to the chassisare also available. Tractor chassis with 42/64 drivecan be specified ready for use with a tipper semitrailer.

    The new Volvo FH and FM are available with clutch-independentpower take-offs for powering all types of applications. An engine-driven power take-off is available for all engine variants. With thenew Volvo D9 engine, you can obtain high output while on themove 650 Nm via a rear-mounted power take-off. You alsohave access to high power with a flywheel-driven power take-offwhich is available for the new Volvo FM.

    GEARBOX-DRIVEN POWER TAKE-OFFS

    Volvos power take-off is mounted directly on therange-change housings rear section. It is a compact,lightweight unit. Drive comes from the idler shaft inthe gearbox. The bearings and shafts are robustlydimensioned and drive is engaged conveniently witha built-in pneumatic cylinder. The lubrication systemis shared with the gearbox. The oil is cleaned effec-tively in a full-flow filter and for tougher operatingconditions, you can equip the gearbox with an oilcooler (option).

    Engagement, speed control and other functionscan be controlled conveniently via the trucks elec-tronic system. For instance, you can specify anelectronic control unit for various body functionsintegrated into the on-board electronic system.

    LONG SERVICE INTERVALSWith Volvos special oil, you only need to change the gearbox oil andoil filter every 3 years or after max. 400,000 km. This applies to I-shift,Geartronic and all manual gearboxes.

    LUBRICATION-FREEAll the propshaft universal joints and support bearings are lubrication-free owing to the use of modern, high quality grease and effective sealsand encapsulation to keep out dirt and water. High-pressure truck washesare no problem at all.

    STURDY PROPSHAFTSCross-tooth flanges are used on all flanges in the propshaft links. Thisdesign provides immense strength and permits high torque. In addition,fitting and removing the propshafts is quicker. In principle, this designfeatures a male and female coupling with sturdy teeth that engage oneanother in deep grooves for secure grip.
