Legends Car Show On a beautiful, warm spring day, the Crescent City Corvette Club held its annual Legends open car show on the grounds of the Boomtown Casino on the West Bank of New Orleans. The open car show had so many different types and models of cars, trucks, and bikes, and it was filled with well over 100 vehicles. The registration process was smooth and well organized, and the goody bags were nice and generous. They also contained a two for one buffet coupon for the tasty buffet at the Boomtown Casino. That afternoon, many awards were presented by the President of the Crescent City Corvette Club, Mary Berkowitz, to great vehicles in such categories as Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Interior, etc. Felix Famularo served as an entertaining and knowledgeable emcee. Among the many awards given out was an award given to the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club for having the Best Club Participation. They brought 33 members to this wonderful car show. There were also some other nice awards given to 3 members of the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club for the Valve Cover races. First Place went to Karl Schroeder, Second Place went to Malcolm Graff, and Third Place went to John Pinero. Congratulations to these deserving members of the GNOCC!

The proceeds of the car show will be given to Children’s Hospital at the Miracle Network Telethon in June, on Channel 6, in New Orleans. We always have a good time chatting with Margaret Orr, Norman Robinson, and Melanie Hebert when working the telethon, and, when giving the huge donation to Children’s Hospital that day. I want to congratulate and thank the members and staff of the Crescent City Corvette Club for organizing this worthwhile and fun-filled open car show each year. The day is entertaining and fun, and gives the car and truck enthusiasts a chance to visit with each other, and to display their cherished vehicles to the visitors and other

car owners. See you next year! Kathy Culbertson The Corvette Reporter

New Orleans International Auto Show On March 18-20 the 10 members of the CCCC displayed our cars in the Convention Center as part of the New Orleans International Car Show. We have done this for several years now and again we all had a good time talking to the

public about Corvettes. On Friday we had our March meeting one of the rooms in the Convention Center and with the PowerPoints projected on the wall reminded me of the Holiday Inn days. We were also honored to have Craig Eppling visit with us again. He discussed what was happening in GM and answered our questions. Also it was a special meeting because we celebrated Joan’s 39th birthday once again.

March Meeting We enjoyed the meeting and dinner at Outback this month. The dinner was paid from the club treasury general account and not from any car show proceeds. Thanks to the Board for a great time, good food and good friends.

Americarna

I suppose the best way to describe Americarna is that it is three days of celebrating all the great things about the American lifestyle, cars, food, music etc. With a view to that a group of friends gathered in Lower Hutt at various people’s houses to base themselves for the event. Most of us were driving our Corvettes but a number of people had other makes and models. At our house myself and Jude had our 75 Vette out for its first real run since Rod had built a great engine for it (383 cubes of the general’s finest) Rod & Kaye had left their Vette at home and had brought “Doris” a fully restored 57 Chevy sport coupe for her first outing and Shane and Dawn in their big block powered 32 roadster.

First morning and we convoyed to the Petone working mens club for assembly with the 350 odd other entrants. There were all makes and models ranging from late 20’s vintage cars and hot rods through to the 50’s and 60’s classics (and a lot of rare cars) through to late model mustangs vipers and Corvettes. Once we all assembled John the organiser gave a short welcome speech and outlined the rules for our cruise ( speeds, road manners etc.) . After the formal bit we were ushered from the sports field we were parked in and allowed to leave in bunches of 50 or so. Amusing to note that some of the Mustang owners were unhappy about being split up from their nice line of cars and put into random groups. We enjoyed lovely weather for the drive in fact we were able to make use of the tee top carriers I bought from Forrest in PA last year (thanks mate). After a short drive of about 30 miles mainly on highway deviated to drive through Raumati and Paraparaumu to drive past some schools and old folks homes to allow them to wave American flags and look at the cars. We eventually arrived at our destination, the world famous Southwards Car Museum. Many of the estimated 700 people took the opportunity to tour this fantastic museum. Our crew had toured the museum previously and we enjoyed the beautiful weather and had apicnic in the shade of the trees and then wandered among the cars and reminisced about years gone by as you tend to do at these events. Later in the day we ambled back to our various accommodations. At our house we dragged out our various poisons and enjoyed a few drinks before the guys did the man thing and burned meat on the BBQ.

Friday morning we had decided to leave early as the first part of the journey was through and over what we call the Rimutaka,s which is a road that could compare with the famous “Tail of the Dragon” as an aside some of our recent American visitors reckon our whole country is a tail of the dragon , however we arrived nice and early at Featherston and about 10 of us found a nice cafe and enjoyed breakfast and a chat in the sun with a few strays joining us. All too soon the main group rumbled through town and we joined the main bunch for the 20 mile drive to Masterton where all the cars were guided in to the centre of the town and parked up for the public to enjoy. We enjoyed a wander around catching up with friends and acquaintances and staggering from cafe to cafe and generally enjoying the day. Later in the afternoon we made our way back across the hills and prepared to host our friends at another BBQ. A good time was had by all and at about 8.30 we travelled off in a group to join the cruise night that was being held in the main street of Petone. This was not well attended by cars or the public and some work needs to be done to make it more of an attraction for all.

Saturday is the final day of Americarna and we arrived in Lower Hutt for the country fair and car display, parked our cars and went off to explore, ladies shopping and guys doing car stuff. The fair was enjoyable and we spent a pleasant day lazing about. After the show we mooched back home and got organised for Saturday nights function that was being held at the Petone working mens club. We all enjoyed a great night with the entertainment, company and drink providing a great atmosphere. Sunday morning was time to wish our visitors goodbye as they had about a five hour drive home. We had previously organised our monthly club coffee run to coincide with this event and we accompanied our visitors as far as Te Horo and enjoyed breakfast with them before waving them on their way.

This event is a most enjoyable way for newcomers to meet and get to know local New Zealand car people enjoy some of the hospitality that we are famous for. If any people fancy a bit of an adventure in the South Pacific just email us at [email protected] and we will give you as much information to assist that we can. Remember when its cold and unpleasant in your part of the world its mid summer in our part of the world.
