AFTER monthsofsittingonthe fence the R1.4 billionBallito Junction regional

shopping centre developmenthas been given the go-ahead bythe KwaDukuza Municipality(KDM).

Themunicipality,onWednes-day, approved the Site Develop-ment Plan (SDP) for the65,000m2megamall project be-ing led by theMenlynMaine andFlanagan and Gerard consorti-um.

AccordingtoplanstheexistingBallito Junctionwill be extendedbymorethansixtimesitscurrentsize into a world-class regional

shopping destination at the en-trance to Ballito.

Construction on Ballito Junc-tion, which is located at the en-trance of Ballito, between thebusyN2andM4highways, is an-ticipated to take about 24months.

The new mall is scheduled toopen in the first quarter of 2017.

The new Ballito Junction willbe home to the town’s first cine-macomplex,inadditiontoboast-inggreat familyentertainment,ahugely expanded fashion offer-ing for the regionandanexcitingmix of food outlets.

Speaking to theWeekly, may-or Ricardo Mthembu said themallwill bea “drawcard” for the

KwaDukuza Municipality.“We are already a tourist des-

tinationofchoice forpeople fromSouth Africa and abroad. Thisnewmallwhich, Iamsurewill ri-val many regional malls, willmean growth for us as amunici-pality and as a community. Wewill haveaccess to somuchmorethan we do now, even our owncinema.

“It is about time KwaDukuzais seen as the place to be. I amhappy about this developmentand cannot wait to see how itturns out.”

It is going to take the shopping, entertainment and leisure offering on theNorth Coast region to a whole new level, with the new mega mall set to become the hotspot in Ballito both for locals and tourists.”

“Getting the green light means wecan commence with the redevelopment of Ballito Junction into the dominant regional shopping centre on theKZN North Coast.

“This exciting development will seethe existing 10,000m2 centre beingoverhauled and extended to65,000m2,” said Patrick Flanagan, executive director of Flanagan and Gerard Property Development and Investment.

“The new, significantly larger andmore striking Ballito Junction regionalshopping centre is being developed tomeet the retail and leisure needs of agrowing and affluent market on theNorth Coast.

“It will boast a considerable entertainment and leisure component, anchored by a Nu Metro cinema complexand trendy restaurants.

“This, together with a worldclassretail mix of top SA and internationalfashion outlets and major departmentstores, will set the new Ballito Junctionapart in the region,” he adds.

Jankowitz also said that at R1.4 billion, this is a massive investment not

just in Ballito, but KZN as a whole.“While our initial investment will

take the mall to 65,000m2, development rights that exist on the site allowfor the centre to be further expandedto 90,000m2 – that’s “superregional”shopping centre status.”

According to developers theexisting centre will continue to trade,largely unaffected by construction activities.

However, the centre will undergo adegree of modernisation, so as to tie into the expansion.

Current anchor tenant Pick n Paywill be expanded, and other existingtenants like DisChem, will be joined byan array of department stores.

Illustrating demand and how upbeat national and international retailers are about the development, Flanagan says more than 80% of the spaceis already let.

“It’s more than two years before thenew Ballito Junction regional mall isscheduled to open, and we have already secured several major retailbrands.

Woolworths, Game, Edgars, Foschini, Truworths, Jet, Queenspark, Markham, Identity, Total Sports, Clicks, Incredible Connection, Cape Union Martand Coricraft are among the retailersalready signed up to join Pick n Pay andDisChem at Ballito Junction,” he said.

On the entertainment and foodside, Nu Metro Cinemas, Spur and Turn‘n Tender, and a host of popular fastfood outlets and restaurants in thefood court have already been secured.

BRAZEN armed robbers target-ed the Mandeni Mall on Mon-day evening killing a security

guard andwounding two others dur-ing the attack.

According to IPSSMedical Rescueparamedics Paul Herbst, who re-sponded to the cash heist, it is be-lieved that fourheavilyarmedattack-ers opened fire on security guardswhiletheywereexitingashopjustaft-er the collection of money.

“Two guards where shot and arein a critical condition while a thirdguardwhowascaughtinthecrossfiredied. The wounded guards wheretransported tohospital by IPSSMedi-cal Rescue Advanced Life Supportparamedics.“Oneoftheguardswaslaterairlifted

from hospital to another facility forfurther care.”

The suspects escapedwith an un-disclosed amount of cash.No arrests were made. The MandeniSAPS are investigating.

SEVEN-year-oldPhiliswaNgidiwasmurdered bymenwho attacked herfamily at her home in Mandlakazi,iLembe District last Wednesday.

Ngidi was allegedly snatched byarmed suspects who stormed herfamily’shomeand lockedupher rel-atives in the house before fleeingwith the young girl.

When her family managed to es-cape, theydiscoveredNgidi’s lifelessbodywithmultiplewoundsnear the

yard gate.The motive for the incident has

not yet been established, but policeare investigating the matter.

KZNMECforTransport,Commu-nitySafetyandLiaisonWilliesMchu-nu, has expressed shock and angerat the heinous murder.

Mchunu strongly deplored themurder of the child, describing it as“cruel, senseless and inhumane”.

“This diabolical deed is extreme-

ly shocking, objectionable and un-justifiable and we shall monitor thecase until there are arrests and con-victions.

“It is always painful and sadden-ingto loseanylife,but it isevenmorepainful when a young life is lost insuch a cruel manner.

“I have been assured that policeareworking around the clock in thismatter.While I am equally outragedby this incident and understand the

gravity of the situation, I appeal tothe community to observe calm andrestraintandallowthepolice tocon-tinue their investigation.

“We also plead towhoevermighthave information as to who is re-sponsible for this heinous deed toshare it immediately with the po-lice,” said MEC Mchunu.

He also expressed his heartfeltcondolences to the family andfriends of Ngidi.

THE official 2014/2015 adjust-mentbudget for the iLembeDis-trictMunicipalitywaspresentedto council for approval andadoption last week.

Inhis presentation to counciliLembemayorWelcomeMdaberecappedon the first sixmonthsof the financial year sightingchallenges and achievementsmade thus far with the biggestchallenge being the drought.

“This [drought] hit the dis-trict hardat thebeginningof thefinancial year, challenging usgreatlyasthebudgetfortheyearwasjustbeingimplemented,de-manding the municipality tofind immediate interventions todeal with the crisis,” he said.

According to Mdabe, aftercollective consideration, it wasestimated that the droughtwould cost council R37.8 mil-lion.

“Costs involved hiring plantsto deliver water in the affectedareas, buying jojo tankers, me-dia coverage and other relatedcosts. A recent communicationwith theKZNDepartmentofCo-operative Governance and Tra-ditional Affairs has revealedthat the district will be support-edwithaDisasterReliefGranttothe value of R37.8 million.”

Mdabe revealed the annualapproved budget for servicecharges is R269.7 million andthe proposed budget adjustedwas R178.9 million.

“The decrease of approxi-mately R90.7 million is due

iLembecouncilapprovesadjustmentbudget

mainly to the de-crease in sanitationincome and in waterservices income.

“Since sanitationis now levied viawa-terconsumption, themunicipality has ex-perienced challen-ges in this regard aspreviously the sani-tation service wasnot linked to a tariff.The municipality iscurrently address-ingthe issueandbill-ing will be done ap-propriately to con-sumers.”

At this meeting,council also notedthat thebudget is ful-ly compliant withsection 28 (6) of theMunicipal FinanceManagement Act inthat the municipaltax and tariffs willnot increase as a re-sult of the adjust-ment budget.

television cooking reality show theUltimate Braai Master season four.

Going by the name team ShisaMfethus, Leibrandt and Pillay wereselected as one of 15 teams to havetheir auditions filmed at their homein Rocky Park.

SpeakingtotheWeeklyLeibrandtsaid:“Wehadafewhourstopreparefive dishes before the judging panelarrived at our home.

“We cooked a tripe with sherrypotjie servedwith savoury pap, Tar-

zan leg of lamb grilled over an openflame using a wheelbarrow, home-made buns and chillie beef burgersservedwithmushroom saucemadeover the fire, a breakfast specialcombination of onion rings andcheesewrappedinbaconandgrilledover the smokey coals. For dessertwemade local fruit skewers ofman-goes and pineapples drizzledwith acurry powder and mint sauce.”

Present at the audition was theUltimate Braai Master filming crew,celebrity chefs and owner of Har-vey’sRestaurant. Therestof theaft-ernoon was spent tasting the mealsand playing soccer with the judgesand filming crew.

Theworkshopwas to followuponprogress and implementation of theresolutions that were taken duringthe disaster management workshopwhichwasheldon25and26Novem-ber 2013 at Darnall Country Club.

According to the iLembe DisasterManagementRiskUnitmanager Sifi-so Ngubane, the workshop also in-tended to enlighten stakeholders toadvocate for an integratedandco-or-dinated approach in an effort to dealwith issuesofclimatechangeanddis-aster risk reduction as per policy di-

rective of the Disaster ManagementAct,Act57of2002and theProvincialand National Disaster ManagementFrameworks.

Those who attended includedmembers of council, Amakhosi andcouncillors as well as disaster man-agementpractitioners,sectordepart-ments, ward councillors, ward com-mittees, community developmentworkers, community caregivers andnon-governmental organisations.

Ngubane shared with the guestsinformation to be passed on to thecommunity regarding reporting dis-asters.

cupational programmes because they are not awareof what makes these programmes unique.

“As the name indicates, occupational programmes prepare students for a specific occupation,” he elaborates. “They are thus very focused andstructured to get a student as workready as possible.” Besides their specific focus, occupational programmes have certain distinctive advantages, whichVenter unpacks as follows:

1. Register anytime – due to the training methodology, students can register for occupational programmes at almost any time.

There are exceptions here and there, but most occupational programmes are open for registrationthroughout the year. Students can start their studiesstraight away – unlike degree courses for example,where registration deadlines and course times arestrictly applied.

2. A National Senior Certificate or National Certificate (vocational) may not necessarily be required– registering to participate in occupational programmes don’t necessarily require a matric certificate and have different entry requirements. Theserange from Grade 10(NQFlevel 2) to Grade 12(NQFlevel4),whichmeansthatifyoudon’thaveaNational Senior Certificate (NSC) you can still start yourstudies and reach your career aspirations.

3. Open doors to higher learning – occupationalprogrammes make it possible for you to start yourstudiesholdingaGrade10certificateandendupwitha degree. This is because a student builds credits overa period of time and can use these credits to gainaccess to higher education courses through credit accumulation and transfer (CAT) or recognition of priorlearning (RPL).

4. Short course – most occupational programmes can be completed within a 12 month period. Once students pass all the required tests and assessments, they receive their awards (certificates)and can enter the job market.

5. Employment ready – occupational programmes are less theoretical in nature and tend tobe more practically orientated in teaching methodology and learning outcomes. Some programmes aredesigned with a work integrated learning (WIL) component, during which time students get handsonpractical experience. Once students successfullycomplete their occupational programmes – the theoretical as well as the practical training they arecompletely ready to work in their chosen occupation.They can hit the ground running, as employers arefond of saying.

YOUNG boys in this day and age bully theirpeers into consuming alcohol, which is wrong.

Parents themselves need to be wary ofthe consequences of allowing your teenagersto drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes as thismight have a negative impact on your child’slife.

Most parents want their children to begood, decent human beings.

On Friday we witnessed a young boy collapse right in front of us. His peers poured 20litres of water all over him in an effort to bringhim back to consciousness.

Afterwards they put him in a parked carand left him there for about 30 to 50 minutes.

Oneoftheboy’sfriendssaid:“Lethimsleephe will be okay, that is what happens whenyou drink for the first time.”

The next day we found out that the boywho had collapsed was in hospital becausehe is diabetic and alcohol is not good forhim.

We pray that God will be there for the boyand his family during such a difficult time andwe urge children to wait until they are the appropriate age to start drinking alcohol.

How far canpeer pressurego?

THIS year’s State of the Nation Address(Sona) definitely did not disappoint inproviding free circus entertainment formillions of South Africans and the world.

The event gave birth to a hashtagthat started trending worldwide andSouth Africa became that country airingits dirty linen in public.

It started offline when it was aboutfashion choices and trends and tweets,this showed the lighthearted side ofSouth African politics.

If we are to succeed as a nation weneed to start believing in the power ofhuman agency. We need to resurrect theidea that the choices we make, and theactions we take, matter.

It is true that the uneven legacy of theapartheid system weighs heavy on us. Itis a fact that black children still do nothave the same opportunities as whitechildren. This is a human tragedy that nobody in this beloved country of oursshould accept. Much has been done to redress the past, make no mistake, but the

blame game has to stop now.Life in South Africa today is certainly

better than it was during apartheid butwe need to hold ourselves to a muchhigher standard than that. We need tobecomethenationthatPresidentNelsonMandela helped us believe we could become, a place of hope, prosperity, selflessleadership and mutual respect.

And so the honest question we mustask ourselves today as patriotic SouthAfrican citizens is, what is holding us backfrom achieving Madiba’s vision?

We can blame apartheid. We canblame the global financial system. Wecan blame global warming. We can evenblame Jan van Riebeeck.

But in our hearts we know what thebottom truth and the problem is wehave allowed those in power to becomebigger than our institutions, breakingthem down bit by bit under our nose andwe have allowed ourselves to becomesubjects of mockery in the global village.

Dear fellow South Africans here aresomepointstoponderwhenmakingyournext electorate selection of leadershipfor this country.

How do you defend the blatant abuse

of media freedom in Parliament throughthe installation of a signal jammer, undermining our hard won constitutionalrights?

How do you explain armed policeofficers physically removing elected officials from the National Assembly andliterally seeing blood on the floor ofParliament.

How do you justify countrywide, rolling blackouts, planning our lives aroundload shedding schedules, and relying ontorches, gas and candles in the modernera taking us back to the Stone Age?

How do you not condemn the very obvious dismantling of the country’s crimeand corruption fighting institutions?SARS, the Hawks, the NPA, the SIU, theSAPS are all riddled with problems andhave lost the faith of the public

How do you rationalise the decisionby the ANC to effectively ban all foreigners from owning land in this country andrepelling muchneeded foreign investment?

Every time a cop is arrested, or a tender is irregularly awarded or another dismissal goes to court it erodes my caseagainst the critics.

But I am still going to defend SouthAfrica. I refuse to stand on the sidelinesand laugh or despair.

We have allowed one powerful manto get away with too much for too long.This man here in our presence today hasbeen ordained as ‘mighty president theuntouchable’. South Africa, enough isenough.

Let’s think deeply about the choiceswe make and let’s not make history repeat itself.

Voter education is now detrimentalmore than ever starting from municipalto provincial level and then national level. Let us uproot this chaff before it evensimmers down to the future of our children and the generation to come.

It’s up to us as a democratic nationto stop this mockery and treat this nationas a serious business not a free circusshow for the whole wide world to see.

You and I can put an end to this.What people and the world witnessed onthe State of the Nation Address is just atip the iceberg. It has to stop now.

AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, is proud to announcethat 12 first year students have been awarded fullbursaries by the KZN Film Commission to study atthe AFDA Durban campus.

A significant relationship has been built betweenAFDA and the KZN Film Commission over the lastthree years.

A common goal to develop intellectual capital andskills in KZN exists and will continue so as to developthe necessary skills required to create a sustainableentertainment industry for KZN.

“It is a great pleasure and honour in my job to beable to work with the KZN Film Commission to growour industry in the region.

“KZN is a well of opportunity where our graduatesin 2016 will start businesses and creating content foraudiences.

“How could one not be proud to be part of thisprocess. I extend my thanks to the KZN film Commission and staff, Carol Coetzee the AFDA Durban staffwho made this opportunity available for the students,” said Franco Human, AFDA Durban Dean.

Siphesihle Khwela, a second year AFDA film student, describes what this opportunity means to him:“I think it’s great to have someone who believes in

Sisters Shivana and Shveta Naidoo were both fortunate to have received a bursary from the KZN FilmCommission to attend AFDA in Durban.

Shveta Naidoo said: “I am really grateful for theopportunity to study at an institution like AFDA. Withthis bursary and my degree I know that my future willbe a bright one.”

“KZN Film Commission is dedicated to providingthe opportunities to the youth and in turn growingthe skills level in the film industry in theprovince.

“It is with this in mind that we are pleased to havegiven bursaries to 12 AFDA students and we look forward toseeingthesestudents developand latermakea difference in the province’s film industry,” said CarolCoetzee, CEO of the KZN Film Commission.

The AFDA Durban campus currently offers afully accredited and internationally recognised Undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree with variousdisciplines in Film, Television and Performance.

In 2016, AFDA Durban will also offer a Postgraduate BA (Honours) degree and a new UndergraduateBachelor of Commerce degree in Business Innovationand Enterprise.

FOOD for Life KwaDukuza, a non–profit orga-nisationaffiliatedwithFoodforLifeSouthAfri-ca, will deliver 18 000 (72 pots) plates of foodto poverty stricken areas in KwaDukuza thisSaturday, 14 March.

Food for Life KwaDukuza currently distrib-utes over 2000plates of freemeals perweek tothe needy at orphanages, schools, old agehomes and in poverty stricken areas.

Since the inceptionof theFood forLife reliefprogrammein2002,theyhaveserved1.25mil-lion plates of food in the KwaDukuza area.

FoodforLifehavepartneredwithChildWel-fare SA - KwaDukuza to assist in delivering

meals to thedestitute inandaroundKwaDuku-za.

At their last project in October last year theorganisation prepared and distributed a totalof 15 000 (60 pots) plates of food togetherwith more than200 volunteers and sponsors.

Food for Life is now appealing to business-es and individuals to get involved in sponsor-ing, preparing and distributingmeals to areasof their choice or join in distributing on Satur-day.

Pakistan pulled off a hardfoughtvictory under the DuckworthLewismethod in a match reduced to 47overs. Pakistan posted 222 in 46.4overs with skipper MishahulHaq (56)and Sarfraz Ahmed (49) the chief contributors.

The Proteas batsmen squandereda good start in pursuit of their runchase, but the loss of wickets at regularintervalsledtotheirdownfall.Noteventhe brave heroics of standout skipperand batsman, AB de Villers, whosmashed 77 runs off 58 balls could savethe blushes of the South African outfit.

AUDI’S secondgeneration R8 sportscarwilldebutatthe2015Genevaautoshow in March and be in Europe’s

showrooms later in the year.South Africa has to wait until the second

quarter of 2016 for delivery — and bear inmind that in Europe the V10 (a new engine)costs the equivalent of R2.1 million and theV10 Plus R2.4 million. South African prices,as always, will be announced at the locallaunch.

The latest R8 has subtle design changes,the new V10, new allwheel drive and thelatest in Audi technology.

The previous 4.2 V8 has been superseded by a nonturbo, 5.2litre, V10 in two variants. Standard, it’s capable of402kW/540Nm, 100km/h in 3.5sec and323km/h. The R8 Plus is tuned for454kW/560Nm, 3.2sec and 330km/h.

Each drives a sevenspeed S tronic transmission; fuel consumption for the standardversion rated at 11.8 litres/100km with emissions of 275g/km, the Plus at 12.4/100kmand 289g/km. The S Tronic comes withmanual mode, launch control and coastingmode.

The R8 V10 Plus has a dry weight of1454kgs, 50kgs less than its predecessor.

Ulrich Hackenberg, board member fortechnical development at Audi, said: “Motorsport is in Audi’sgenes, ithas always been

a permanent feature of our brand’s character. With the new Audi R8, our engineers arebringing accumulated racing expertise fromthe race track onto the road. No other modelof ours evokes more dynamic emotion.

“All of that,” Audi says, “makes the newR8 V10 Plus the most powerful and fastestseries production Audi yet.”

NEWLY crowned KwaZulu-Natal Challenge League(Stream Two) champions,

Ilembe Cricket Union started theircampaign in the KZN ChallengeLeague Twenty-20 Knockout Cupwith an emphatic seven-wicketvictory against Amanzimtoti CricketClub (ACC) at the country clubgrounds on Sunday.

Cameron Mill and Justin Jonestook the tally from40/4 to 55/5 in the12th over before Joneswas caught atmid-wicket by Aaron Pillay off thebowling of Sher. Jarryd Michaux (2)was beaten for pace by fiery Ilembebowler Mohamed Mhlongo offeringkeeper Ismail a simple catch.

Mill scored a painstaking 12 runsbefore popping the ball to bowlerAlveiro Nadasen, who took a simplecatch. Cameron Flower was sent foran early shower after being trappedLBW to a Pillay delivery for a duck.

The visitors were bundled out for

DARREL Shanmagum outclassedCharlie Pillay in straight sets (20) inthe final of the Nine Pillay and Familysponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association singles tournament at the NorthCoast Tavern in KwaDukuza onWednesday night. Shanmagumromped to a 20 win against Jerry Arunachellam in the quarters to secure aplace in the semis. Nine Pillay, hopingto clinch the singles tournament(sponsored by himself), was eliminated (20) by Yogan Pillay in the quarters.

Yogan ran out ideas in the semis,producing horrendous darts which ledto his 20 drubbing at the hands ofShanmagum in the semifinal.

Veteran darts campaigner PaddyPadayachee battled gamely to outsmart his younger opponent CharliePillay in their quarterfinal clash, butwas left ruing his chances in the firstset after failing to close the game witha double despite arriving right near thefinish line ahead of his opponent.

Pillay, who battled to record hugescores throughout the first set, collaredhis rival at the finish line to close on adouble and take a 10 lead. He uppedthe tempo in the second set, canteringto a comfortable (20) win to secure asemifinal berth against Jerry Govender, who beat Jodie Naidoo 21 in theother quarterfinal clash.

Charlie Pillay trounced Jerry Govender in straight sets (20) to book hisplace in the final against Shanmagum.

Darts association president JerryGovender thanked Nine Pillay andFamily for their sponsorship and congratulated finalists Pillay and Shanmagum, who have produced consistent darts throughout the start of thenew season.
