H E L L OThis issue we're all about cozying up for winter and spending slow weekends at home – simple ideas for entertaining and loads of reasons why you should

bunker down for a party at home.

We bring you some of our favourite ideas to make your home a space you'll want to share, so when it comes time to entertain you need little more than

good food and great company.

Let us show you how easy it is to entertain at home no matter what the setup. Try scattering floor cushions

and serving lunch in the lounge room or taking a humble Sunday morning breakfast as the perfect opportunity

to celebrate life's little pleasures.

Whatever the style of entertaining we hope you'll find new ways to gather with friends and family

this winter.

Whether it’s a date for two or a full table, brunch is a classic weekend institution. A mostly pre-prepared menu lets you, as the host, relax and enjoy it too. One of those lovely, little luxuries, brunch can be a quick catch up with friends or a leisurely get-together that spills well into the afternoon.

Lay a table with fresh, white linen, a vase of simple blooms, draw back the curtains and let in the winter sun as you share

a delicious selection of sweet and savoury, wholesome and decedent. When it’s time to eat you can indulge in as much or as little as you like, share the spread with your guests

and just go slow.

Firstly prepare the nectarine. Sprinkle the sugar over the nectarine segments and

make sure well coated. Heat a small pan on medium heat. Add the nectarine segments. Allow them to cook for 1-2 minutes before

squeezing the lemon juice over the top. Continue to cook for 2-3 minutes or until

segments start to turn golden brown.

Meanwhile, prepare the French toast. Beat the eggs and milk together in a medium

mixing bowl. Mix in sugar and salt.

Heat a knob of butter in a pan over medium heat. Dip the brioche in the egg mixture,

ensuring all sides are soaked. Add the brioche and cook evenly on all sides.

B U T N O T S O G G Y F R E N C H T O A S T …

Make sure you don’t leave the brioche soaking in the egg mixture for too long.

Also be sure to cook on a medium heat, too hot and the outside will brown too quickly

and you’ll have a soggy centre.

Serve the French toast with a quenelle of mascarpone and the caramelised nectarines.

Preheat oven to 180°C. Line mini muffin tins with baking cases.

Cream the butter and sugar together with electric mixer, until white and fluffy.

Grind hazelnuts without shells to rough flour texture. Chop the chocolate into small chunks. Slowly add the beaten eggs to the butter and sugar mixture, beating all the time.

Add half of the ground nuts and half of the flour, beat briefly at a slow speed. Add the remaining nuts and flour along with the chopped chocolate and orange zest and fold until combined.

Spoon into muffin cases, ensuring not to overfill. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Test with a skewer to check the mixture is cooked. Leave in the tin to cool.

To make the icing, break the chocolate into a heatproof bowl and place over a saucepan of simmering water. Allow the chocolate to melt. Cut the butter into cubes and add to the melted chocolate. Remove from the heat and stir through until the butter and chocolate combined. The mixture should look smooth and shiny. Leave to cool and thicken.

Ice the cakes when the icing has thickened to your desired consistency.

I was keen to know how Jessie enjoys her beautiful space in her down time. It just so happens that a lazy, Sunday morning with

her hubby sharing warm spiced milk and some quality time is her favourite thing to do at home – I can't think of anywhere better

to share a quiet Sunday morning.

Jessie filled me in on a typical Sunday morning, “On Sundays we love to take things slow and wile away the morning cooking,

eating and reading. We set our little table with linen cloth, glass confit jars, simple ceramic plates and bowls – and always

something to read. In winter we'll make something to warm against the cold, (like spiced almond and coconut milk, poured straight from the saucepan) and in summer it will be something fresh and cooling. Whatever the menu it's always uncomplicated and usually a little messy! Breakfast often stretches to brunch while catching up at the table, reading amongst the cushions

on the daybed or cooking more food”.

Jessie James, from Follow Studio, designs with a calming neutral palette, accented with intricate details and organic textures –

her home is no exception.

S E A M L E S S S O P H I S T I C AT I O N Jessie’s work and home spaces are subtly integrated. There is something interesting everywhere you look – all a testimony to her eye for detail. Jessie loves to have a collection of favourite things on her studio workbench – a four metre long trestle table salvaged from a junkyard, which she stripped back and painted in white milk paint and black japan.

At first glance Jessie’s home is subtle and simplistic, but a closer look reveals a beautiful warmth created by all of her treasures. Delicate tasselled curtains, textured linens and subtle patterns work together to embody Jessie’s understated style. Linen and hessian cushions lay on a rattan daybed in the sunroom, ready for an afternoon nap – one of the couple's special spots. While an old handmade chair (a vintage store find) acts as a bedside table, Jessie's collection of coral and shells that are scattered around the house, bring some of the ocean outside, in.

O R D E R I N T H E H O U S E Organisation is not just for looks – keeping the office space in check adds to the serene sense of calm in the home which is welcomed whether Jessie is in her creative work zone or just relaxing. “I try to live simply, with things that are functional and beautiful – this is especially important in the studio. A row of hooks in the studio keeps the things I use often out on display,” Jessie explained.

Jessie and her husband, R U S S , mix up a spiced treat in winter – their almond and coconut milk brew – a soothing blend made with their own choice of spices. Try adding cinnamon, ginger, vanilla bean or star anise for your own special version. Whiz the hot milk and spices together in a blender to make a delicious, frothy, Sunday treat – the perfect comfort drink.

Brekky in bed can be as luxurious or quick-paced as you please.

Today's the day to finally read that stash of newspapers and magazines that have been filed away for months on end. If it's a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, a little notecard with a sentimental line or two will make a sweet memento of the day.

A breakfast tray means dishes are kept in order – less chance of spills on beautiful bedlinen.

Page 40: FetePressIssue03Jun12

The beauty of breakfast in bed is you get to spend some time in what is often the most intimate and beautiful space in the home – your bedroom. How blissful to lay on beautiful linen sheets surrounded by plump cushions, reading favourite magazines and just taking it all in.

The best part of making your own is you can tweak the recipe to include heaps of the good stuff and scrimp on the not-so-great. Amelia and Adrian have both been avid collectors since they first met as teenagers and their home, an original settlers cottage in

Meadows in the Adelaide Hills, is a testimony to their life’s work.

The cottage, with its white-washed stone walls, is nestled amongst a glorious cottage garden complete with bountiful

vegetable patch and an old fashioned picking garden filled with an amazing display of plant varieties.

Adrian and Amelia now trade in Danish vintage furniture from both their city shopfront, Danish Vintage Modern, and their

hills' warehouse and also offer an enviable collection of French antiques out of what was once the town’s original butcher's shop,

which is joined to their cottage.

When they are not selling finds from their amazing collection, they are travelling to Denmark, France and other fabulous

destinations (often with the three children in tow) on one of their buying trips. When they are home a long Italian-style lunch is

how they like to spend some down-time with friends.

My sister, Amelia, and brother-in-law, Adrian, have an enviable lifestyle – along with their three children they have built

something that can only be described as ‘the good life' and they love to share it.

Their jam-packed tiny cottage has the most amazing warmth, and whenever you drop by you will usually find Adrian pumping out a latté at the retro coffee machine while Amelia is finishing off a delicious homemade cake or batch of biscuits. It's no wonder they always have a full house as friends and family love to pop in to enjoy some of Adrian’s famous stories and Amelia’s special cooking.

For starters Amelia served up traditional Italian minestrone with organic sourdough toast. The rich colours in the menu are reflected in the seasonal flowers from the garden arranged in Amelia’s usual effortless style.

Amelia and Adrian’s collection of curios extends to ranges of crockery and linen. As stylists, Jane and I love to visit and trowel through their treasure trove. No matter what style of entertaining they choose, they always seem to have just the right things to throw together and the result is always unique and relaxed.

Both Annabelle and I live in small homes with little room for formal, sit-down entertaining. We have to be quite creative when it comes to spending time with friends during the cooler months.

Annabelle shared with me her favourite way to entertain on a winter's afternoon – a curry lunch. Most of our friends are pretty

handy in the kitchen and enjoy a good meal but with small children and work commitments, catering an entire meal seems

just a bit overwhelming.

This is where the curry lunch comes in – it's pure genius... everyone makes or buys one dish each, with a menu planned to ensure no double-ups and something to suit every palate

– all the details sent out in an email.

A date is then set and everyone meets, pot in hand, ready to share a few beers and lots of laughter along the way.

Just because it's chilly outside, there's no need to hibernate away. It's the perfect excuse to light the fire and settle in for

an afternoon of fun with friends.

I'm lucky enough to have the original fireplace in the 1870's cottage I share with my husband. A visit from friends is the perfect excuse to collect kindling on my daily walk and get the fire roaring to life once again. A low coffee table set with natural linens and simple crockery is a perfect backdrop for the vibrant curries and condiments to come. A choice of floor cushions and relaxed sofa seating created an instant ambience and meant everyone could get comfy as they pleased.

I love Indian cuisine as it offers so many wonderful vegetarian options, many easily made at home. One of my favourites is dahl, a spicy lentil dish that can be served as a main course or as a side dish. Another favourite is an eggplant and potato curry – mild, but rich with complex flavours.

A collection of favourite linens are at the ready to catch any spills – a sure thing with dripping curries in sight – they give a wonderful warm texture to the table. After guests have left be sure to treat any grubby spots on linen by soaking them in stain-remover before washing in the machine. They'll be as good as new and ready for another messy lunch or two.
