2 The Parish Rooms
Mike ShawThe inflatable sculptures are concerned with the creation of singular forms with variation and unity. They do so whilst accelerating an ongoing exploration of the relationships between internal and external space. In particular, they question what is the true interior – the space trapped within the PVC skins or the holes and chambers passing right through them?
Natalie DowseThis work has been selected from the exhibition produced for the Vickers Fine Art Award 2007-08, created in response to the theme ‘Senseof Place’. Natalie Dowse came to Derbyshire as a stranger intending to explore this new location as a newcomer. She is particularly interested in the notion of being ‘displaced’ into a new environment and how we respond to the confusion of unfamiliar.
Maggie CullenDrawing on what she sees as interior worlds of people, Maggie attempts to express joy, fear, anxiety, fragility and vulnerability. She sees her work as an emotive response to the world around her, an exploration of moments in time that are constantly changing and evolving.
4 Memorial Hall Gardens
Laura BaconInterior spaces and tension of materials are of huge importance and Laura will use thick cord or elastic to create a large installation.
7 Willow Bath Mill
Willow Bath Mill accommodates a small community of ten artists, designers and fabricators. Visit over the weekend to meet them and see the wide variety of work that is made.
11 The Market Place
The Caravan Gallery The Caravan Gallery is a mobile exhibition venue and visual arts project run by artists Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale who are on a mission to record the ordinary and extraordinary details of life in 21st century Britain. Eager to examine clichés and cultural trends, they are particularly drawn to absurd anomalies and curious juxtapositions, typical of places in transition and in the process of reinventing themselves.
19 The Vicarage Gardens
Maxine HallSitters bathed by natural light take ownership of the chair and a command of the lens. Their concentration and seriousness fills the pictures with a profound sense of place and self.
39 The Stable Block
John TunleyThere is an inherent concurrence between natural history specimens and photography: they are our mirror on nature, just as photography is often seen as our mirror on the world.
Paula MossLarge scale photographs offer a very different interpretation of the countryside. Working in situ at local manufacturing companies, Paula has used their materials and merchandise to create a series of mountain-like structures.
40 Newbridge Works
The Festival and NOW are partners in the Creative Futures programme, which has helped to develop a project for the conversion of Newbridge Works as workspaces. This will be an opportunity for new creative businesses and we see this and similar projects as crucial to the economic and cultural life of the town. With the generous support of the owners, G W Housley and Son, the building has been opened as a Trail Venue and will include an exhibition of work by new graduates from the University of Derby. We hope this will raise awareness of the potential of the building and help to raise the necessary funds for the project to continue as part the Creative Futures Strategy.
56 Moot Hall
Martin RogersIn preparing the Moot Hall for the exhibition of Martin Rogers’ work as part of the Wirksworth Art and Architecture trail, some painted fragments were discovered on the ceiling of the Hall. The configuration of these has been carefully studied, and they would appear to be similar to a painted ceiling in the Villa Allegri Arvedi near Verona, a work by Ludovico Dorigny.
The Windows
Indulge yourself in a spot of window shopping with a difference! Enjoy finding pieces of art in amongst the usual items on display in the towns’ shop windows. Artists James Moffett, Kirsty Smith, and Johanna Domke-Guyot have been commissioned to produce new site specific work.

Credit: Our artist programme each year is managed by a Panel of artists and arts curators, who can give a consistency and credibility to the selection of participating artists. This will depend on the range and quality of work submitted, together with the availability of venues, and will always present difficult decisions of both balance and risk. We are grateful for their efforts and appreciate the professional commitment that is involved. Our Selection Panel for 2008 was Veronica West, John Wheeldon, Jayne Falconer, Andrew Dunlop, and Jenny Hoon.
Our coordinators for the Art and Architecture Trail were Emma Mortimer, Tim Dowdell and Judie Taylor. The Makers Market was curated by John Wheeldon and Jenny Hoon.
There are lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants in the town, and they will be responding to the Festival event with all types of food, including coffee stalls, crêpes, sandwich bars and a hog-roast in the market place.
There is a leaflet showing all participating outlets explaining what they have to offer – available with the Trail Guide.
