The Festival of Living committee would like to welcome you to this year’s event - a parade of things we like to do! This is a celebration of the achievements of people who have a learning difficulty and the organisations who provide support. A big THANK YOU to all the organisations who supported us and the other local organisations who are here today! At the heart of this event is the CHARTER FOR INVOLVE-MENT which shows how people who use services want to be involved. The Charter was written by members of the National Involvement Network - NIN. Most importantly, the Charter helps us to be listened to and respected. You will get lots of information about the 12 Charter statements at the NIN stand. We hope you have a lovely afternoon ..... WHAT IS ADVOCACY? Advocacy helps you to speak up for yourself so that people will listen to you and take notice of what you say. The person who helps you is called an advocate. WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU? We will act for you only when and how you choose; We can go along with you to meetings, medical ap-pointments or reviews; We will stand by you when you have to make choices or decisions about things which affect your life (e.g. where you live or how you are cared for); We will help you to speak to other people; We will do things WITH you, not FOR you.

i-DANCE meet every Thursday at the Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock to focus on different and innovative ways of develop-ing individual skills and talents, through the medium of dance. The company was originally founded as iRKY PiRKY in 2003 by East Ayrshire Council Museum, Arts & Theatre Section. The company

has come a long way since those early days, with many signifi-cant achievements under their belt. One of our most recent developments was to introduce a se-cond dance class at the Sir Alexander Fleming Centre on Thursdays from 1-2pm. This has provided a great opportunity to introduce our work to new people who want to try out danc-ing. We are delighted to be part of the Festival of Living this year with members of the new class. i-DANCE recently topped all previous achievements with a tri-umphant double bill of their own work at the Palace Theatre in April which received rave reviews. Previously the company has made a short film with renowned Scottish choreographer Alan Greig, and documentary maker Brian English, and it has also staged two full-length performances at the Palace with per-formers from London based company, Amici. Both these eve-nings presented challenging and innovative dance theatre and received much critical acclaim. Anyone interested in finding out more about the work of i-DANCE, or in supporting the company, please contact:

The Charter for Involvement was written by members of The National Involvement Net-work a group of people who get support from different social care organisations from across Scotland. We want to encourage people to take control over the things that affect their lives and to make sure that support organisations commit to putting the Charter into practice.

Hansel Community Supports – HCS – started in 1997 and works in partnership with East Ayrshire Council. We are not a building based service. We provide individ-ualised support to our customers in their own homes, in their community, on holiday, in continuing education and development and in work – supporting each person to develop their experiences and skills and, most important-ly, their friendships. It is important to us to work closely with our health col-leagues to support our customers to live healthy lives, whilst taking early action to address any problems. The Keys to Life and access to self directed supports increasingly enable the people we work for to take con-trol and make their own care arrangements. We wel-come this! Our person centred approach enables people to make their own choices and follow activities that are meaning-ful to them. We look forward to telling you more about HCS at the Festival of Living on Wednesday 17

School Work Placement Programme at Hansel Young people have the opportunity to gain valuable experi-ence in the world of work which for many of them would normally be out with their grasp within the mainstream work experience programme. Placements are offered within Grounds Maintenance, Laundry Operations, Lindy’s Tea-room and the Baird Centre at Hansel. All the young people are made very welcome by the staff which goes a long way to ensuring that they are put at ease from day one.
