History of Lessons and Carols United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century in England and has its roots in the Office of Readings. In this service, we listen to Scripture lessons which recount the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson’s messages and a brief prayer. Let us embrace this musical and spiritual offering as a way of entering into the true spirit of Christmas.

Opening Prayer Bishop Rivituso

We gather here to recall the mystery of our redemption. Though sin drew us away from God, He never stopped loving us. The prophets told of the coming of a Messiah who would initiate a reign of justice and peace. This promise was fulfilled in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Let us now reflect with joy on this wondrous mystery.

First lesson

Reading Isaiah 9:1–6

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who lived in a land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at harvest, as they exult when dividing the spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, the rod of their taskmaster, you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, upon David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!

Carol In the Bleak Midwinter

Sung by Choir

1. In the bleak midwinter, Frosty wind made moan. Earth was hard as iron; Water like a stone, Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter Long ago.

2. Our God, heav’n cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain, Heav’n and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak midwinter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

3. Angels and Archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air; But only His Mother In her maiden bliss Worshiped the Beloved With a kiss.

4. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, Give my heart.

Text: Christina Rossetti. Music: Gustav Holst, arr. J. Guy Stalnaker, © 2019 by CPDL.

Prayer Bishop Rivituso

Lord of mercy, despite our sinfulness, you never stopped loving us. Fill our hearts with your mercy, that we may forgive others. Amen.

seCond lesson

Reading Isaiah 11:1–10

But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide fairly for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall graze, together their young shall lie down; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the viper’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the peoples— him the nations will seek out; his dwelling shall be glorious.

third lesson

Reading Isaiah 52:7–10

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion, “Your God is King!”

Hark! Your sentinels raise a cry, together they shout for joy, for they see directly, before their eyes, the LORD restoring Zion. Break out together in song, O ruins of Jerusalem! For the LORD comforts his people, he redeems Jerusalem.

Prayer Bishop Rivituso

Lord, we wait for the day of your peace. May we help to bring this peace to our families, our communities, and our world. Amen.

Fourth lesson

Reading Luke 3:1–6

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

2. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare. One more seed is planted there: Give up your strength the seed to nourish, That in course the flow’r may flourish. People look East and sing today: Love the Rose is on the way.

3. Birds, though you long have ceased to build, Guard the nest that must be filled. Even the hour when wings are frozen He for fledging time has chosen. People look East and sing today: Love the Bird is on the way.

4. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim One more light the bowl shall brim, Shining beyond the frosty weather, Bright as sun and moon together. People look East and sing today: Love the Star is on the way.

5. Angels announce with shouts of mirth Him who brings new life to earth. Set ev’ry peak and valley humming With the word, the Lord is coming. People look East and sing today: Love the Lord is on the way.

Prayer Bishop Rivituso

sixth lesson

Reading Luke 1:26–38

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”

And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

seventh lesson

Reading Luke 1:46–56

Mary said:

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. for he has looked upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever."

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned to her home.

Carol Magnificat

Sung by All

1. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit sings to God, my saving God, Who on this day above all others favored me And raised me up, a light for all to see.

2. Through me great deeds will God make manifest, And all the earth will come to call me blest. Unbounded love and mercy sure will I proclaim For all who know and praise God's holy name.

3. God's mighty arm, protector of the just, Will guard the weak and raise them from the dust. But mighty kings will swiftly fall from thrones corrupt. The strong brought low, the lowly lifted up.

4. Soon will the poor and hungry of the earth Be richly blest, be given greater worth. And Israel, as once foretold to Abraham, Will live in peace throughout the promised land.

5. All glory be to God, Creator blest, To Jesus Christ, God's love made manifest, And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter, All glory be, both now and evermore.

eighth lesson

Reading Matthew 1:18–25

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

God of power and might, you are beyond all time and space. May we never fail to recognize your majesty and give praise to you in all we do. Amen.

ninth lesson

Reading John 1:1–5, 9–14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth.
