WELCOME
We would like to warmly welcome you to the annual Bealtaine Festival. For the past 20 years, Bealtaine has grown into Ireland’s largest co-operative arts festival with over 3,750 events taking place last year in cities, towns and villagesthroughout the country.
The national Bealtaine festival, co-ordinated by Age & Opportunity in partnership with local authorities and arts and older people’s organisations, features older people as artists and performers, as event organisers and as audiences and participants. It isthis unique collaboration across generations that makes the festival special each year. THE STATE OF THE NATION / THE FUNDBy Conor Malone, directed by Charlie BonnerFour towering figures of Irish political history – Charles J. Haughey, Michael Collins, Jim Larkin and Thomas Davis - meet to play poker in the afterlife where the conversation quickly turns the current ‘state of the nation’. First produced in 2016, The State of The Nation was part of the Ireland 2016 Commemorative Programme, funded by Donegal County Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The Fund won third prize for Conor Malone in the 2015 RTE Radio 1 PJ O’Connor Awards. It was broadcast on RTE’s Drama On One programme later that year. SATURDAY MAY 6
AN INTRODUCTION TO PLEIN AIR Plein air — a french word simply meaning open air, it’s roots date back to the early nineteenth century and has flourished world wide ever since. The Gaeltacht Thiar Tír Chonaill art group are a branch of the National & International Plein Eire organisation and meet weekly at various locations to capture the sights and scenes, culture and heritage of North Donegal. The emphasis of the paint-outs is not on producing ‘finished’ art pieces but inspiring people to take up their brushes, pencils and pastels and experience some relaxed fun and creativity in an atmosphere where people of all abilities are encouraged to just have a go. Three Bealtaine paint-outs will take place during the month of May and will be preceded by this introduction to plein air workshop, focusing on composition, using thumbnail sketches, equipment & materials, tips & tricks.Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny @ 11.00am - 1.00pm Info: 085 8388306 / [email protected]

I, MALVOLIOIn his brilliant one-man show, Tim Crouch unlocks Twelfth Night for new audiences, telling a timeless story of bullying, prudery and practical jokes. I, Malvolio is a charged, hilarious and sometimes unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience.
Part abject clown, part theatre-hating disciplinarian, Malvolio asks his audience to explore the pleasure we take in other people’s suffering. This is a show for anyone who has ever been told off, called a name or has fallen in love with the wrong person. An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny @ 8.00pmAdmission: €15 / Bealtaine Concession €10Booking: 074 91 20777 / www.angrianan.com

TEA DANCE & BOOK LAUNCHLetterkenny Active Retirement Association launch their book of memories, ‘Life In a Lantern’ consisting of poems, stories and photos. The memoir project was envisaged as a way for the members of LARA to reflect back on their lives and to have that reflection curated by an experienced facilitator. The results of this process have been fourfold. Old age has been characterised as a period of ‘integrity’ vs ‘despair’. When a person reflects back on their life in such a way that celebrates and cherishes that life lived, then despair does not overpower. Those who have their accomplishments celebrated will feel a sense of integrity. This is a vital determinant of good mental health. This process has also allowed the group to realise their creative potential and to express this in the form of the book (poems, stories and short memoir pieces) and small installation that is being launched as part of Bealtaine. This project also strengthened the bonds of friendship within the group and made the group’s identity cohere in a celebratory way. EILISH O’CARROLL - LIVE, LOVE, LAUGHBest known as Winnie McGoogan in her brother Brendan’s successful BBC sitcom, ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’, Eilish comes into her own here with this reflective look on an eventful life that includes a strict Catholic upbringing, two failed marriages and coming out as a lesbian at the age of 50. While poignant and deeply moving it is also packed with humour. A 1950s baby, and the ninth of ten children, she describes her childhood with affection and humour. The end result is a warm, witty triumph that joyously celebrates being true to yourself.Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey @ 8.00pmAdmission: €20 / Bealtaine Concession €15Booking: 074 91 31840

MOTHER LOSSWritten and directed by Maura Logue.Mother Loss imagines a reunion of these three extraordinary women – Mary Wollstonecraft, pioneering British writer and feminist, whose ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ made the outrageous claim for the time that women were not naturally inferior to men, but only appeared so through being denied access to education. Her daughters Mary Shelly, author of the classic Gothic horror story Frankenstein, and Fanny Imlay, the illegitimate and younger of the two, who took her own life at age 22 in 1816, each have their own dark histories exposed in this family gathering. The losses and the hardships these women endured in their private lives, with stoic and singular resolve, in a time of inequality and bondage, are explored in this intimate new play.An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny @ 8.00pmAdmission: €15 / Bealtaine Concession €12Booking: 074 91 20777 / www.angrianan.com
