Dear Friends, In this week’s bulletin you will see two im-portant items about the progress and future of our parish. First of all, you see the notice about the An-nual Catholic Appeal about which I wrote and spoke last weekend. Next weekend I’ll be conducting the in-pew appeal for those who may not have received a pledge card in the mail. As I said, I need the help of those who are not participating in the Generations of Faith campaign from last year to help us make our goal for this year’s ACA. Please do what you can. Secondly, we publish our annual pastoral and financial report for the year September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015. This data has been reviewed by the parish trustees, Finance Committee and ac-countants. We are in good shape in general. Finan-cially we ran a relatively small deficit due to the ex-tensive construction we’ve been doing. Since most of the heavy construction and deferred mainte-nance repairs are now complete, we anticipate trending more positively going forward. Pastorally, you can see that most of the numbers for sacramen-tal events are trending upward, as in Mass attend-ance, praise the Lord. One area I would like very much to increase would be in the number of English-language participants in the Pastoral Institute Lay Leader Program. There are many areas of pastoral preparation we could and should address with more trained lay leaders, especially in the English-speaking pastoral area, as we already do in the His-panic community. Please speak to me about it if you would be interested to learn more. Meanwhile, thank you all for your tremendous support for our parish in every regard, and let us continue to pray for one another. God love you, Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS If anyone is in need of a contribution statement for tax purposes, please contact the rectory. If possible, please have your envelope number ready. Thank you.

PRO-VITA MASS The Pro-Vita Mass is scheduled for Saturday March 5, 2016 at 5 PM at St James Cathedral, 250 Cathedral Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE DE EL PASTOR

Sean G. Ogle

LATIN CHANT PRACTICE Many of you have told us how you love the Latin Chants of our Catholic tradition. So here's a chance to learn a little more. Sandra, who chants at the Sunday 8 AM Mass weekly, will spend a few minutes after Mass to review some of the basic chants of the Mass. Please join her in front the St Jo-seph altar from 9:00am to 9:15am on Sundays. Jubilate Deo! ("Rejoice in God!")

PRAYER OF THE WEEK February 28 Third Sunday in Lent

Exodus 3:1-8, 13-15; Psalm 103:1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12: Luke 13:1-9 The fig tree in today’s Gospel could symbolize perceptions of Jesus by those who were threatened by His presence. They didn’t under-stand the type of fruit He bore, so they considered it no fruit at all. Furthermore, they considered the tree a waste of space. Many people see Gospel values as a waste of time. And our temptation is to focus more on those people than on ourselves. Look at how the Gospel opens today, with people asking about the sins of others rather than taking a good look within. Lenten repentance calls us to look within ourselves. Do we allow the sins of others (their judgments and ridicule) to determine how true we are to the Gospel? Or do we cultivate our lives in ways that bear much fruit, regardless of what others think? The challenge is to be faithful to the Gospel regardless of how we may be rebuked by those who are threatened by Jesus. Father Kevin Murray, C.Ss.R.

THE STABAT MATER This Latin hymn, composed in the 13th century, commemorating the sorrowsof the Virgin Mary at the Crucifixion. The message of the Stabat Mater focuses on the spiritual and emotional bond which unites Mary and all Christians to the death of her Son on the Cross. From this bond, each Christian can recognize the incredible compassion and holiness in Mary's character.

Monday Can you only imagine a mother's heart wrenching pain, seeing her child in such ago-ny and all she could do was wait and weep? At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to her Son to the last. Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, all His bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed. O how sad and sore distressed was that Mother, highly blest, of the sole-begotten One. Tuesday How strong the human heart as to endure such misery! Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother's pain untold? Wednesday Such is a mother-son bond that unites Mary with her beloved Jesus during his experience of suffering and death. For the sins of His own nation, She saw Jesus

wracked with torment, All with scourges rent: She beheld her tender Child, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent. O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord: Thursday Would we?... could we... truly take on some of Mary’s distress if we stood with her that terrible day? Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord. Holy Mother! pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified: Let me share with thee His pain, who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died. Friday The beloved Lady of Sorrows teaches us that the Crown of eternal life in Heaven can be reached when we each choose to walk beside Our Lord in His suffering and death on the Cross at Calvary. Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning Him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live: By the Cross with thee to stay,

there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins blest!, Listen to my fond request: let me share thy grief divine; Saturday "Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the Hour of our death." Let me, to my latest breath, in my body bear the death of that dying Son of thine. Wounded with His every wound, steep my soul till it hath swooned, in His very Blood away; Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, lest in flames I burn and die, in His awful Judgment Day. Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, be Thy Mother my defense, be Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays, may my soul Thy goodness praise, Safe in Paradise with Thee. SUNDAY 8AM MASS ANTIPHONS Entrance Antiphon

Oculi mei semper ad Dominumm quia ipse evellet de laqueo pedes meos: respice in me, et miserere mei, quoniam unicus et pauper sum ego. My eyes are always on the Lord, for he rescues my feet from the snare. Turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and poor.

Offertory Antiphon Iustitiae Domini rectae, laetificantes corda, et dulciora super mel et favum: nam et servus tuss custodiet ea. The judgements of the Lord are right; they gladden the heart, and are sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. And so, your servants shall keep them.

Communion Antiphon

Passer invenit sibi domum, et turtur nidum, ubi reponat pullos suos: altaria tua Domine virtutum, Rex meus, et Deus meus: beati qui habitant in domo tua, in saeculi laudabunt te. The sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest or her young: by your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they who dwell in your house, for ever singing your praise.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL PRAYER Let us pray that stewardship may become a way of life for us as we share the many gifts we have received from the Lord. Reflecting on our lives, and all that we have been given, we pray for the courage to truly live our faith by sharing our time, talent, and treasure in answer to the Lord’s call to relieve the suffering of those in need in our Church, our communities, and our world. ~ ~ ~ Teach us, O Lord, to Share the Joy of the Gospel, understanding always, that generosity is shown in acts of friendship, respect, and encouragement, and in every act of human kindness toward our brothers and sis-ters in need.
