Greetings everyone, my name is Barry Lowry. I’ve only been a member since November 2008 so I’m not really sure what I’ve just done …but I’ve volunteered to take over the newsletter responsibilities from the capable hands of Tom Stein. First, I wanted to thank Tom for his mentoring and assistance in making this transition as smooth as possible. Also, thanks to the Board mem-bers for their encouragement and support through the transition.

As I told club president Dave, I’m not much of a writer, so for this to work, I’m really counting on the membership to provide articles for the newsletter. In reading other regional newsletters, the ones I enjoy the most have a diverse range of local interest articles from the membership.

In addition to the regular features of Die Offene Stras-se, here are some ideas for article/story submissions:

•Tell us about your first (or second or third…) Porsche and why you decided to purchase it•“How to”, “Clinic” or “Tech Tips” type articles from and for those who work on their cars•Letters to the Editor•Photos and road trip experiences with your Porsche•Your favorite twisty road in Ohio•Car show experiences you have had•Racing and track experiences•Someone (or a few) technically/mechanically inclined who could start a regular Q & A section to help the membership with answers to their technical questions•Reactions from members to social, DE, rally, auto-cross, tours or concours events•Book reviews of interest to Porsche owners•Advertisers may submit articles of interest to Porsche owners

You get the idea…in other words; send stories, people like you, would be interested in reading. Deadline remains the same; 10th of the month for the upcoming month.

May 2009

Members in Attendance: Dave Hayden, Marsha Hayden, Ginny Barry, Mike Stoner, Betsy Mac-Donell, Brian Peterson, Ron Carr, Frank Todaro, Tom Stein, Gerhard Hillmann, Jeff Dupler, Tom Todaro, and Barry Lowry.

The meeting was held at the King Avenue Sports Lounge and started at 7:02pm. Since there were some new faces to the board meeting, Dave had everyone introduce themselves to Jeff and Barry. Betsy read the minutes from the February 4, 2009 meeting. The minutes were approved as read. In the correspondence department, Dave relayed that Parade registration is now done over 3 days instead of the usual one. The Zone 4 Presidents meeting will be on March 24th at the Maumee Resort outside of Toledo. Dave hopes to coordi-nate calendars within the different regional clubs. An online “Goodie Store” has sent Dave some information about their service. At first glance, it appears to be a good idea, all MORPCA needs to do is supply the logo and the company will make the items on an as needed basis. Dave will send a “dummy store” to the board members so they can see how it works.

Mike presented the treasurers report in the usual spreadsheet format. There were some minor changes in the cash balance due to the track deposit for Bluegrass. Two advertisers, Parts Heaven and 944 Group have cancelled their ads with MORPCA. Mike assured the board that the treasury money is safe with Vanguard Federal ac-count. Even though it has a low interest payout, it is better than the FDIC. Eagle eye Ron spotted some irregularities with some of the numbers and Mike will check on those. Mike asked if we really

needed the storage unit at $1300 a year. Frank wants to do an inventory and then decide what is best.

Driving Events was handled by Frank who was pleased to announce that registration for the May DE at Mid Ohio opened last night and already has one participant! Frank plans to advertize all driving events via e-mail to the 250 plus ad-dresses of past participants and to other club presidents. He hopes to get a press release out to the Dispatch when the weather is better. Frank is working on getting all registrants a map of park-ing spots for the various events within the online sign up session. Brian wondered if we should tell the D/C run group people that will not be included in the MORPCA event that Northern Ohio Region is hosting a DE on May 4-5 (two weeks prior to our DE). After some discussion, it was decided to alert those people of the op-portunity but to limit doing advertizing for other region’s events beyond a listing in DOS and Web site calendar. Then another discussion ensued over what are the requirements of being classi-fied as A/B drivers for DE purposes? Is it how many events attended or is it a judgment call on the chief instructor. Probably the latter will be utilized.

Jeff Dupler is now the new IRAC chairman and he passed around an excellent summary of the schedule of events for this summer. There is even an event at Columbus Motor Speedway!!! He presented a budget for 2 IRAC events and 2 local MORPCA events. Dave will forward a list of Ohio Car Clubs to Jeff for advertizing purposes. A discussion developed over when is an event

“full” and how is that determined. Since each site is different, the number will change so early registration will be the key. Brian wants to push all driving events in order to secure money from sponsors and has designed a poster advertiz-ing all the opportunities to drive this summer. Jeff will get a firm number of what they need to purchase in new timing and scoring equipment for the April meeting. Jeff had hoped to apply for the PCA subsidy for a multi-regional event. Dave felt it will be awarded to the P2O event but Ron thinks IRAC satisfies the requirement be-cause of the technical session before each event. A motion was made to accept the IRAC budget that Jeff presented (with some minor changes) and it passed.

Ginny announced that the club membership is down to 792 members as of last month. She passed around some membership applications so board members can have them ready when we see a Porsche owner that could benefit from MORPCA!

Tom Stein was excited to announce that Barry Lowry will be the new DOS editor! Some new software is required for Barry to pick up the DOS reins. This request is within the budget so it will be purchased ASAP to get the transition go-ing. April newsletter material should be sent to Tom and he will let everyone know when to start sending material to Barry.

On the social front, Gerhard Hillmann an-nounced that the wine tasting party held at his home was extremely well received with 40 attendees and the event broke even! The Polar Bear Trap Shoot had 19 participants and the best score was turned in by Ken Stoner, Mike’s son, who had never shot before the event! Gerhard

reminded all that the MAG car clinic is on the horizon for Saturday, April 4th. Brian Peterson will talk to Byers about holding a clinic closer to the DE dates. A new event series was an-nounced by Gerhard that will be called “Third Thursday Summertime Cruise-In”. Each location will be announced in advance through an e-mail blast and he hopes to hold them in different parts of the Columbus metropolitan area.

Web site King, Brian Peterson, informed the board that the site is now with Network Solutions which is a UNIX server and has the capability to do forms and questionnaires. Brian also said he has a verbal commitment for the title sponsor! He is working on a poster and tee shirt design to accompany the final negotiations. Brian has been working with Byers and they want to do a techni-cal event there.

Marsha Hayden, Charity Chairperson, said that one of the checks was returned because of a changed address. MORPCA has been invited to attend the Columbus State President’s Circle Breakfast on April 9th. The event recognizes ma-jor donors to the college. Marsha cannot attend and wanted someone from the board to go and represent the club. Betsy MacDonell volunteered to go.

The meeting adjourned at 9:01pm with a motion from Gerhard and a second from Marsha. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 1st at King Avenue Five Sports Lounge starting around 7pm. Try to meet for dinner around 6pm!

Our Loss!by Jim Mudra

I have never been to Mid-Ohio without Sue Beal. Sue was there for every Drivers Education event, every Media event and every Professional race. I can’t imagine Mid Ohio without Sue Beal.I have had the pleasure of chairing the MORPCA driver’s education event at Mid-Ohio for the past 10 years. Every year at our first drivers meeting at garage7 I would ask Sue to come and give her flag talk. Sue was there at the start and finish line, flag-ging you every time you went out on track. You know that schedule we gave to you in your driver’s packet? The sched-ule of when your group went on track for your run? It was Sue who kept us on time and on sched-ule through the entire event. She did it with ease even when one of us went off track and needed the tow truck to get back in. If you went off track or were black flagged, it was Sue who let me know what you did and where you were on the track when you did it.At some of the driver’s events I would spend the entire day working pit out. People in the club would say to me “Oh, how do you do that? Stand-ing there all day in the sun…” I never let on that I got to spend all day visiting with Sue and my other friends-- the corner workers. At every Club Race since the first one, Sue and

her husband Louie were in the Timing and Scor-ing tower working our event. They were there at our Saturday night dinner at Bucks with the other corner workers.

Sue knew so many of our club members-- Sue Crawford, Dick and Flo Snyder, John Peacook, Rick Snyder, Dave Hayden and many others. She considered all of you her friends, and over the

year as we would see each other, she would ask about your well being. Sue knew many of you by your car and car numbers. Yes, she had a list of drivers and car numbers. You may not have known her but she knew who you were. Sue knew many a famous race driver by name as they knew her. She was there on test days when their team rented the track. She was there at the start-fin-ish line flagging them too. She was known to share stories about them with those of us who worked the head phones with her.Sue and I grew up to-gether. We shared a love of racing and sports cars. She was one of the best

parts about being at Mid-Ohio for me. Sue Beal died March 25 in Med Central Hospital here in Mansfield. She had worked at Mid-Ohio for 30 years. She was a member of Lake Erie Communication and Sports Car Club of America and worked on the safety crew at the track.Sue always called me “Mudra” How I will miss her! What a great loss for the track and our club.

Short Shifter’s SchreibenBy Dave Hayden, President

Today, the 12th of April is another bright and sunny day with a brilliant blue sky. We get so few of these in Ohio. Some say central Ohio holds a Guinness record for the fewest sunny days per year. That may explain why I’m so happy when they do arrive.

Our Club Race and Drivers Education at Mid-Ohio is only about one month away. This is a very busy time for the club. A lot of behind the scenes work takes place during the few weeks preceding this event. We have a special need for many volunteers at these events. Please, if you have some spare time contact volunteer coordi-nator Ron Carr ([email protected] or 740-967-6027). He will appreciate hearing from you.

Where’s the beef? Do you remember that phrase from a Wendy’s TV commercial? The one about the three elderly ladies who visit a fast food restaurant. They order a hamburger with a very large bun, but only to find a tiny burger between the slices. One of the ladies asks three times, “where’s the beef?” After a while she says, “Hey, I don’t think there’s anybody back there.” Sometimes, that commercial reminds me of our club member participation. We have about 800 members and we always see the same 40 to 50 people at the events. I’ve been told this is normal for clubs. That may be true, but I don’t have to like it or accept it.

I enjoy talking with the Porsche owners at the

tech clinics held at MAG and Byers. The dealers host these events for their customers, not just MORPCA members. I attended the MAG clinic on April 4 and met several owners who were not members. Ginny Barry and I talked to them and she gave them membership information. Hope-fully, they will join and become active members. I also talked to several members who I never see at club events. Are you one of those drivers who have given thought to some spirited driving, but have not yet taken that leap? Last month I talked about our new program a Taste of the Track. I often tell a newbie to try one of our autocrosses first. These are low cost, low pressure and not much risk to your car. We will start the season on Sunday, June 28. This activity is a good place to start. Next, I’d suggest attending one of our Driver Education events and take a Taste of the Track I discussed these details in last month’s column. We will be offering a Taste of the Track at Putnam Park in July and at Mid-Ohio in May (abbreviated form) and at Mid-Ohio in August.

Don’t forget our monthly meetings. They are always on the first Wednesday of the month at the King Avenue 5, on King Avenue in Colum-bus. Our next meeting will be May 6. Some of us gather at 6:00 PM for socialization (always an important part of the evening). The meeting should start about 7:00 PM.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA. -Now that the dust has settled on TRG’s one - two finish at the 47th running of the Grand-Am Rolex Series Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona in January, the reflection on the data tells the tale of the race. Justin Marks, RJ Valentine, Andy Lally, Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister drove the No. 67 TRG Porsche 997 to victory by running a near perfect race. The team’s third win at the 24 hour started with excel-lent preparation by the TRG crew that started over five months ago. With a fleet of four new Porsche 997 GT3 race cars and one 2008 model, the prepara-tion for the early January test was no small feat by this seasoned team. The cars ran flawlessly at the test and were just as strong during the race. The No. 67 finished the race in ninth place overall, including the Daytona Prototype field, and the No. 66 came next -tenth overall. All that the No. 67 Construct Corps/CRG/No Fear Energy Drinks/K1 Speed/Voodoo Ride/Gemstone Winery/TRG Porsche GT3 needed during the 24 hours of racing was gas, oil, tires, and a fresh driver. Justin Marks was impressed with how the team and drivers performed with very few mistakes. “I think that I was surprised at how clean the race was,” Marks said. “We had two small penalties and one doughnut on the car. Those were the only hiccups in 24 hours of hard running. To me that’s amazing. I was also surprised at the pace we had to run for the majority of the race. You’d never have thought it was the longest race in professional motorsports. The pace was so fast for the first 18 hours. Obviously winning the Rolex 24 is a big deal. But it’s a different kind of win. It’s such a huge effort by so many people that instead of it being something personal for me, the emotions are of pride and honor to just be apart of something so significant. I was more excited to see

the looks on everyone faces and the emotions they showed than any kind of personal achievement. I just feel lucky to be a part of it. Also, it was important for me to deliver a result to Construct Corps. They’ve been behind me through two difficult seasons and never waived their support. This win is my thank you.”

Andy Lally notched his second Rolex 24 Hour win which ranks at the top of his already impressive racing statistics. “I would call it more relieving than surprising,” Lally said. “So many people work so hard for so long to try and win the Daytona 24 that when everything seems like it is coming together that’s when things get the most stressful. Every team member is trying not to make a mistake while at the same time hoping that some of the things that are not within their control go the right way. We knew we had a great car and we knew we had a good driver line-up and we knew we could win the race. We just needed it all to come together and it did. Every single person that had a hand on this car is deserving of the victory, our crew at the track as well as our crew behind the scenes and including the people that managed the entire process. As drivers, we were very fortunate to have such a good team behind us and TRG has proven year after year that they are the best at what they do.” “This win is way up at the top. This is my second win at the Daytona 24 and obviously the first time around holds sentimental value. Daytona has always been, hands down, my most valued and targeted prize over any other endurance race. Anytime you can win a race at this track you have done something special that is a career highlight. It is also a great way to kick-off a year that you intend on racing for a Championship. This was round one of 12 for us and we will walk into VIR with the points lead and the goal of keeping that lead for the rest of the season.”

TRG’s Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona Win by the Numbers It takes an army

May 2009

Hosted by Mid-Ohio Region PCA, the fifth annual Porsches2Oxford event is scheduled for Saturday, July 25th. In 2008, P2O attracted 396 cars from 17 states and 3 Canadian provinces. This year, P2O is hoping to attract upwards of 500 cars to Oxford, Ohio.

Porsches2Oxford, which was the brainchild of Bill and MaryLynn Roe, began seven years ago as Porsches2Pinckney (Michigan) – as an excuse for a group of Porsche-lovers to get together for a drive to dinner. After two years in Pinckney, the event was moved to Oxford. As the home of Miami University, Oxford has the infrastructure to handle one of the fastest growing and larg-est Porsche-only, one day events in the country. With its quaint brick streets, bandshell, shops and boutiques, overnight accommodations, and plenty of restaurants and watering holes for ev-ery taste and budget, Oxford is the perfect venue for a nationally-recognized Porsche event. The streets of Oxford are blocked off exclu-sively for our use from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Throughout the day more that $5000 worth of great door prizes are awarded to those in at-tendance. In addition, P2O will hold its annual People’s Choice car show that this year will give trophies to the top fifty vote-getting cars. For a complete list of the days activities as well as a schedule of events, please visit the new and vastly improved P2O Web site at www.porsches-2oxford.com. This year Porsches2Oxford is hoping to raise more than $7500 for the American Cancer Society. To do so, the entry fee is being raised from $20 per car to $25 – with the additional $5 going directly to the ACS. The entry fee includes

an event T-shirt and poster as well a great goodie bag. We will also be selling forty “prime” parking spaces (in the ‘Starbucks block’) for $100 each. Those ‘buying’ the spaces will get a receipt from the ACS -- and thus any tax deduction associated with their donation. Additionally, we will be giv-ing half of the proceeds of the 50/50 drawing to the American Cancer Society. On Sunday morning, there is a ‘fun rally’ profes-sionally managed by Scenic Road Rallies LLC through the rolling southwestern Ohio coun-tryside. Participation is limited to the first fifty entrants and does require an additional entry fee.

This year our major sponsors are Porsche of the Village of Cincinnati (formerly Beechmont Porsche), Griot’s Garage of Tacoma Washington, Autobahn Extremist of Rocky River Ohio, and Forgeline Wheels of Dayton. Thanks to their support as well as the contributions of our other sponsors, P2O promises to be even bigger and better than in the past -- offering something for every Porsche-lover in the family.

Porsches2Oxford Set for Saturday, July 25th

Cover Story VW-Porsche 914STUTTGART. Everything remained very quiet when today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG established VW-Porsche-Vertriebsgesellschaft mbh, the VW-Porsche Sales Company, together with Volkswagenwerk AG, as it was called at the time, in April 1969. Holding stock capital of DM 5 million, the new company launched the strategy of success for two sports cars still carefully held back from the public pending their final presentation: the VW-Porsche 914 and 914/6.

The establishment of the VW-Porsche Sales Com-pany marked the beginning of a true story of success – and the fortunate end of a dramatic development. Back in the mid-60s VW was looking for a successor to its then rather outdated Type 34 sports coupe, bet-ter known as the “Karmann Ghia”. At the same time Porsche was striving to expand its position in the market with a sports car in the promising segment beneath the 911.

Facing this challenge Ferry Porsche and VW’s CEO Heinrich Nordhoff agreed in spring 1966 on a joint venture destined to benefit both parties: Porsche was given the assignment by Volkswagen to develop a low-cost mid-engined sports car intended to enter the market as a Volkswagen with four cylinders and as a Porsche with a six-cylinder boxer engine.

With the development process continuing at a good pace, the Board of Management of VW was sud-denly confronted with a tragic change: Heinrich Nordhoff died unexpectedly in 1968 and Kurt Lotz was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer. Lotz rescinded the contract agreed verbally and insisted on Volkswagen receiving the sole and exclusive sales rights for the car being developed by Porsche. After long and tough struggles bringing the 914 to the brink of failure more than once, the two companies agreed in a compromise to call the new car the “VW-Porsche” and to market this new model through a joint sales network.

The VW-Porsche 914 was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 11 September 1969 as the first mid-engined sports car built in Germany in series produc-tion. The combination of the two brand names Volk-swagen and Porsche nevertheless turned out to be an image problem for the new model series commonly referred to by the press as the “Volksporsche” or “People’s Porsche”. This was a particular disadvantage for the 914/6 powered by the two-litre flat-six carried over from the 911 T 2.0. For despite its outstanding performance, the 914/6 was hardly accepted by most of Porsche’s existing customers.

The four-cylinder VW-Porsche 914, on the other hand, became a genuine success in the market, ac-counting for a production volume of 115,631 units until the series ceased production in spring 1976, and thus becoming the best-selling sports car of its time.

Most of the cars built were exported to the United States, where the 914 was marketed as a genuine, fully-fledged Porsche without the VW prefix.

Today the VW-Porsche 914 is acknowledged as a popular classic supported by numerous 914 clubs the world over. Particularly the 914/6 built only 3,338 times is one of the most sought-after collector cars from Porsche.

The Porsche Museum is celebrating the 40th anniver-sary of the 914 model series with a rare special exhibit on display from 9 April – 10 May 2009: the Porsche 914/8 with its 300-bhp eight-cylinder racing engine once owned by Ferry Porsche himself. With only two of these cars ever being built, one was presented to Ferry Porsche in 1969 as a special gift for his 60th birthday.

Mid-Ohio Region PresentsDriver Education at Putnam Park Road CourseJuly 10, 11, & 12, 2009Mid-Ohio Region is hosting its annual driver’s education event at Putnam Park Road Course in Mt. Meridian, Indiana. Putnam Park was built in 1991 and the Mid-Ohio Region PCA was one of the first groups to utilize this excellent circuit for high performance drivers education. The track is a 1.8-mile long, ten-turn road course with an excellent layout. The entire circuit can be seen from the pit area. It is a favorite of professional racing teams doing their testing and of club racers alike. Because the track is relatively flat, has high visibility, with plenty of run off room, it makes for a terrific place to begin your high perfor-mance driving experience. Putnam Park is great for experienced drivers as well and offers positive and negative camber corners, several high-speed corners, and a downhill main straight.

Putnam Park is an easy drive, 40 miles west of India-napolis, just off I-70 near Cloverdale. This event has proven to be great for driving and for sharing with old and new friends.

All drivers will have an instructor riding with them on-track until the driver is comfortable with the course and their car. There will be four run groups to better match students of similar abilities in the same session. Run Group A will be for very experienced drivers in higher performance cars. Group B will be for experienced drivers new to Putnam Park or driv-ing medium performance cars. Group C will be for student drivers with some experience, and Group D will be for student drivers with little or no experience.

Classroom sessions are scheduled to discuss several aspects of high performance driving with plenty of time for question and answers. This is an excellent time to learn more about your car and enhance your driving skills. Become comfortable driving your car near the limit, which will improve your overall driving ability both on and off the track.

New This Year: A Taste of the Track: An option designed for those drivers who have not yet decided to take the plunge into high performance driver edu-cation. Here is an opportunity to get your feet wet without making a significant financial commitment; nor risking your car; nor buying expensive safety equipment. For a small fee of $25 you can observe and/ or participate in tech inspection; attend the classroom sessions taken by our students and taught by our very experienced senior instructors; and ride with an instructor (in their car) on the track at speed for at least one session. If you do not have a helmet, one will be provided. You really don’t need a car to participate in A Taste of the Track – everything you need is provided! However, you will also have an opportunity to participate in touring laps in your car. These are low speed laps following an instructor during the lunch period. Any street legal vehicle is eligible. This is a one day event and we prefer you sign up for Saturday, since there is no tech inspection and only one classroom session on Sunday. Event headquarters: The Holiday Inn Express (765-795-5050) at I-70 and U.S. 231, Cloverdale, Indiana. Rooms are being held under Mid-Ohio Porsche Club at a special rate of $76 + tax (same as last year). This relatively new motel has an indoor pool and lighted parking with night time security patrol. There is also a parking area for trailer rigs. Other lodging possibili-ties are the Days Inn (765-795-6400), Briana Inn (765-795-3000), Quality Inn (765-795-3500), and Dollar Inn (765-795-6900). You are responsible for making your own reservations.

There will be a dinner Saturday evening at the headquarters hotel (Holiday Inn Express). No need to clean-up or dress-up. Just roll into the hotel lobby where frosty cold beverages will be waiting along with a buffet. One dinner is included with each registra-tion. Extra dinners are $20. Your reservation must be received by June 26th to obtain the room discount.

Plan to return to Dublin’s Metro Center as the Central Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation invites Porsche drivers to join them for the 27th Annual Classic Auto Show & Cruise-In. This year will feature Mustang on its 45th Anniversary, Lincoln, and the Mini on its 50th Anniversary. This is central Ohio’s premier car-related event – attracting more than two thousand display vehicles each year. This unique Dublin setting is perfect for a car show – with Porsche having Saturday’s prime parking area in the grass, under the trees by the pond. The Arthritis Foundation Show is being promoted as a multi-region Porsche Club of America event and thus we hope to have numerous entries from surrounding Regions.

The celebration kicks off on Friday, July 10th with a Cruise-In, which has become the largest event of its kind in Ohio. More than 1,200 street rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, European exotics and other cruisers from the 1920s to the present will make their appearance. 26-years of tradition will continue with a presentation of over 100 awesome 6-foot-high trophies to the Top Cruise-In cars. A huge variety of terrific food will be available at the concession stands, so plan to come early and spend the entire day with your family and friends, enjoying a live Mike Albert concert featuring the Memories of Elvis in the evening!

On Saturday, July 11th, you’ll have a full day at the exciting Classic Auto, with more than 45 judged classes of automobiles on display, special Show-Within-A-Show groups and several regional events taking place. Rock ‘N’ Roll Oldies will spin all day long, followed by a fantastic live concert by Phil Dirt & The Dozers in the evening, including a dance floor in front of the stage!

On Saturday the gates open at 7:30 a.m., The judging for the Porsche Show-Within-A-Show will begin at

11:00 AM. Judging rules will be the same as in the past few years. We will have a total of 8 Porsche classes (listed on the registration form). Keeping this the ‘user-friendly’ event it has been; engine compartments, undercarriages, and wheel wells will not be judged. Originality is also not considered in the scoring. If you wash your car and vacuum the interior, you’re ready to enter!

The Parade of Champions starts at 4:30 p.m. The Best of Show Porsche will drive in front of the show stage to receive its award while the 1st Place winner and the two Award of Excellence winners from each of the 8 classes will be announced and receive their awards at the Porsche display area by the pond under the trees at 3:00PM. Also presented at that time will be the Floyd Acton Award -- given annually to a MORPCA member who best exemplifies the spirit of PCA and the friendships it creates. Last year’s winners Brad & Carolyn Shisler will be given a ‘keeper trophy’ as they pass the real one onto the 2009 recipient.

Contact Milton Scott at 937.335.9700 or Andy Trux at [email protected] for further information. Visit www.arthritisautoshow.com to see some great pictures of past years’ Arthritis Foundation Car Shows.

We invite all of our Porsche drivers, including those not actively participating in the show, to come out to the Dublin Metro Center to enjoy plenty of lawn parking in the shade, great eats and the wonderful fellowship that is always the hallmark of the Arthritis Foundation’s Classic Auto Show & Cruise-In.

Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 66 AXA/Mitchell Rub-ber/Wealth Management Strategies/TRG Porsche GT3 was surprised by the overall pace of the GT race.

“I was amazed by the pace,” Pumpelly said. “I am used to Daytona being a 24 hour sprint race, but this year’s pace wasn’t too far off of the qualifying times. Until the 86 went out it didn’t subside. We came away from Daytona with good points which, helps in the cham-pionship, but we were only the class of the field for the last eight hours. In the sprint races we will have a lot tougher competition and Daytona was a reminder of that fact.” Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, knows what it takes to win, but is always impressed with the numbers and the effort. “Our 2009 Daytona effort was huge,” Buckler said. “The car preparation started after the last speech at the banquet in September. When you manage a team comprised of 25 drivers from four different countries, five cars, two KONI cars and an army of support crew and staff it is a big task. To win the race on top of all the challenges makes it worth it. Our goal was to win and to get a one - two finish is especially satisfying. After last year, I wanted it bad. As you can see by the numbers it takes an army, and we had one. This sets us up nicely for the beginning of the season with our cars first and second in the GT points standings. It is nice not having to climb out of a hole and start the schedule with everyone chasing US at VIR at the end of April. The bottom line is that I am very proud of every single person associated with this team” Round two of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series will be held at Virginia International Raceway April 24 - 23. TRG was founded in 1993 and has been competing at the top level of motor racing ever since. The team has the most wins of any team in the Grand-Am Rolex Se-ries with 26, including the 2005 and 2006 Rolex Series GT championship trophy to go along with wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

TRG is a manufacturer and distributor of high-perfor-mance racing parts. The group specializes in engine and chassis tuning as well as full service professional race car preparation. The company also provides electrical and mechanical engineering services, driver development and arrive-and-drive opportunities. TRG is based in Petaluma, Calif., near its home track of In-fineon Raceway in Sonoma. The company’s NASCAR operation is based in Mooresville, North Carolina and a new state-of-the-art facility is coming on-line at New Jersey Motorsports Park in late 2009. More information and a complete press kit can be found at www.theracersgroup.com, www.trgmotors-ports.com, and www.theracersgroup.com/newjersey. May 2009

I’m writing to you this month, not as your newsletter editor but as your Ex editor. Yes, the torch has officially been passed to Barry, and he’s out of the gate and running with full speed ahead. The May issue is being produced solely by Barry, in its entirety and that’s a super job to accomplish for a ‘new-bee’; so a big congrats to Barry for a fine job I am sure.

And so my tenure has come to an end. I want to take a moment to say thanks to all of the members in the Mid Ohio Porsche Club, as well as our newsletter sponsors / advertisers for enduring my run in the edi-tor’s seat for the past 17 or so months.

During my time behind the wheel of the DOS, I was fortunate to meet a lot of nice people at the various club events and through emails and phone calls for newslet-ter related articles, ads, etc. Heck, I ev---en bought a car from one of our club members, a roll cage and seats for my 944, you name it; all from MORPCA club members that I met through our club’s newsletter.

When Barry and I first sat down to discuss the newsletter editor’s position, I told him the best things about the gig were that you are the first to see all of the latest news and releases from PCA, first to see all the want/sale ads, and because you get to meet a lot of the club members.

I was pretty amazed at the number of people who emailed me after reading my monthly column updates about my 944 project race car. I met a super nice guy, Mike Foreman,

who is one whiz of a mechanic on 944’s and he gave me quite a few pointers for my car. An-other nice guy, Dick Burrell, gave me a set of 5 point harnesses to use to mach up the mounting points with. John Snodgrass was kind enough to take a Saturday afternoon to go over his race car and point out some do’s and do not’s for me. I think that I talked Alan Shultz’s ear off at the ‘07 banquet, as well as several other club events as he has raced a 944 and had lots of tips to share with me.(more so that I had a lot of questions for him) Definitely, there’s a lot of great people, really nice and outgoing, in this club and the amazing part is that most of them seem to work on their cars and like to talk about it. Guess that defines the true passion for the car, when you bust your own knuckles working on it.

So as I pass the torch on, I ask that you all be kind to Barry and please do try and send him your articles, ads, etc by the 10th of each month so that he doesn’t have to nag you like I so often would. : )

Oh, Oh, no I did not forget; I ‘will’ get a picture of my 944 for an upcoming newsletter so that you all believe that it is running and is not still in pieces all over the garage.(Maybe I can score an action shot at an autocross event!)

Its been real, look forward to seeing everyone around town and at club events.

Tech TalkBOLT-ON PERFORMANCE UPGRADES FOR YOUR PORSCHEBy Dean Lewellenreprinted from Going Places, official newsletter of the Arizona Region PCA

Our normally aspirated Porsches (read non-Turbos) leave the factory in Stuttgart with engines that are leaders in the automotive industry in terms of specific power output--horsepower per liter. The Boxster and Boxster S engines are rated at 80 hp/l and 78 hp/l, respectively, and the new 2002 996 engine is rated at 89 hp/l. In comparison, the 2002 Corvette engine out-puts range from 61 to 71 hp/l. Run of the mill BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz engine outputs are in the 65 to 75 hp/l range. The Ferrari 550 Maranello, known for its “off the scale” performance, has an engine that is rated at 88 hp/l, comparable to the 996. High specific power output engines are not a new Porsche feature, the 1969 911S engine was rated at 85 hp/l, thirty-three years ago, producing 170 hp from its 2.0 liter displacement engine. All of the foregoing may be just “folksy news” after completing a series of driver’s education days, a time trial or a season of Arizona Region autocrosses and we find ourselves wishing for more top speed down a straight or faster acceleration out of a corner.

All non-turbocharged Porsche engines from the Model Year 1984 and on are equipped with an elec-tronic engine management system called Digital Mo-tor Electronics (DME). The heart of the DME system is a digital microprocessor (chip) that controls the fuel flow to the injectors as well as controlling the ig-nition spark timing. A reliable bolt-on increase of 12 to 15 horsepower can be obtained from a good Stage 1 chip that is programmed to be compatible with the fuel octane level available here in Arizona and leaves the rev limiter cutoff unchanged. Autothority, Fabspeed Motorsport and Weltmeister are recognized suppliers of replacement DME chips.

Performance gains from bolt-on aftermarket exhaust

systems are minimal at best. They sound wonderful, even sound more powerful, but at most 5 additional horsepower is the very best one can expect when the stock engine rpm range and the stock camshaft profile is maintained. Keep in mind that 5 horsepower is within the power variations that exist from the tem-perature from a hot day to a cold day. Porsche really does a very good job of providing sufficient muffler flow capacity with their Original Equipment exhaust systems, they are just too quiet for some folks.

On the air intake/filter side of the engine, Porsche’s design and OEM parts provide intake air flow that is nonturbulent and properly metered for good driv-ability. Again, bolt-on modifications in the way of air boxes and special filters result in a more sporting sound but little if any power increase. The addition of five or six 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch diameter holes in your OEM plastic air box outer cover will enhance airflow a little while certainly making a nicer sound at wide open throttle. Expect no more than 5 horsepower from the addition of these extra air inlet holes.

The sum of the above parts is between 20 and 25 horsepower at the top end which will provide some noticeable gains in top speed from your basic stock engine--not bad. The on-board Mass Air Flow Sensor and the oxygen sensors in the exhaust will make the corrections necessary to handle these subtle power gains. Still not satisfied? Read on, but bring your checkbook.

Larger bolt-on engine power increases, thirty or more horsepower, can be achieved through a compatible combination of a “mapped” DME chip upgrade, a high flow air intake system and a high performance exhaust system. A chip may be “mapped” (read programmed) to account for changes in compression ratios, camshaft profiles, air mass flows, exhaust head-ers, and other modifications. The rev limiter cutoff value and fuel/air ratio in the cylinders can be altered and controlled as well. Pay particular attention to the words “compatible combination” when thinking about

Page 29: Ferry Porsche with his VW-Porsche 914-8 (1969) · do is supply the logo and the company will make the items on an as needed basis. Dave will send a “dummy store” to the board

29

May 2009

chips, air boxes and exhaust systems. Remember, a mapped chip upgrade that provides a marked increase in the fuel flow rate to the injectors will not increase the engine’s power output without a matching increase in the amount of air flowing into the cylinders from the intake system to maintain the mapped fuel/air mixture ratio. A higher performance exhaust system is also required to collect and handle the increased flow of exhaust gases exiting the cylinders. In other words, the total performance goal is sort of like sitting on a three legged stool where all three legs must be present and compatible with each other for a good balanced result.

To take advantage of the higher potential gains from a Stage 2 or Stage 3 mapped chip, some internal engine parts will need upgrades to operate at the higher engine revs where the additional power is made and the performance is felt. The 3.2 liter and 3.6 liter 911 engines from 1984 through 1998 all need higher strength connecting rod bolts, and, higher strength valve springs and retainers to operate above 7000 rpm for prolonged periods. These modifications may stretch the term “bolt-on” somewhat past the limit, but the experiences of those going down this road before us have proven them to be wise and necessary investments. A higher performance camshaft upgrade should be considered as well when the valve spring and retainer changes are made.

The high flow intake system that matches up with the Stage 2 or Stage 3 mapped performance chips can be either an internal velocity cone type like a PowerFlow unit or a performance air box type like a Weltmeis-ter or even your drilled out Original Equipment air box. A K&N air filter’s higher flow capacity would be compatible with these air box setups. The matching high performance exhaust system should consist of a header system for collection and flowing of cylinder gases to a muffler/exhaust pipe system. A local area manufacturer and Going Places advertiser, B&B Fabri-cation, is a well known high performance exhaust sys-tem provider. A properly matched Stage 2 or Stage 3 setup will provide a real and measurable performance increment from the additional raw power output plus

the higher rev capacity available.

We have now established both ends of the “bolt-on” upgrade performance spectrum. The 20-25 horsepow-er upgrade can be created under your engine lid for several hundred dollars. A Stage 3 or higher upgrade which may boost power by 35-45 horsepower will set you back several thousand dollars including the internal engine upgrades required for sustained higher rpm operation. You pick your horsepower and pay the price so to speak. It is worthy to note here that the first 20 horses come fairly cheaply and easily but the next 20 horses come at a much higher price due to the complexity and the related upgrades needed.

Besides the engine, there are other areas of your Porsche where bolt-on performance upgrades will improve your lap times or run times--suspension and brakes. Upgrading these components as the engine power is increased will keep the car in overall balance. Again, the three legged stool analogy--if you add more go power, you should add more handling control and stopping power to keep the total performance of your car in balance. Consider a set of performance springs or torsion bars plus a set of performance struts and/or shocks along with the addition of a front strut tower brace to keep the suspension members in touch with Mother Earth in all competitive situations. Brake caliper, brake pad and brake rotor upgrades can be added much like the stages of the mapped DME chips to keep your Porsche’s stopping power matched to the go power selected.

Our Porsches are one of a very few automobiles in the world that can be tuned and improved stage by stage with OEM quality bolt-on performance upgrades. There is a vast array of choices, options and products out there that have proven track records, no pun in-tended. Each owner can create his or her own unique performance niche with bolt-on upgrades depending upon the height of their expectations and the depth of their pockets. Enjoy!
