  • an Ferry: Shouldering Bryan Ferry is the originator of elegance and style in rock 'n' roll. Roxy Music, under its various incarnations, was the cream of intelligentsia. Roxy Music was formed in 1969 as an offshoot of Ferry's interest as an artist and painter. Eventually the concept of the group became more of an "idea and a name" under which various musicians worked together. The band also launched its share of innovators including conceptual artist Brian Eno ("we're sort of friends now"), reedman Andy McKay, and guitarist Phil Manzanera. After Avalon, the final Roxy LP, it fell on Ferry's shoulders to follow up and retain the sound that has been largely attributed to his unique flair for arrangement, instrument placement, and vocal style. While the Roxy legacy continues to generate new fans worldwide, it is Bryan Ferry's new LP, Boys And Girls, which seems to be currently reaping the fruits of Roxy's undying momentum. Like his music, we caught Ferry in a reflective and thoughtful mood. After each idea, his voice at times would trail off and dissipate. At the time of our conversation, Ferry had been several weeks on the road promoting Boys And Girls all across Europe, and finally New York. We were treated to his pleasant and modest side as we assessed his place on the airwaves today.

KZ. You were once a teacher. BF: Well, I was a part time art teacher. I used to teach art three days a week. After I left university, I studied painting for four years. That was '64 until '68. Like I said, I taught for about a year. While I was doing that, I was putting a group together that became the first Roxy Music. KZ: What kind of music did Roxy start out playing? BF: Just the music that was on the first album. Typical self composed songs that I had envisioned years before, though I had been interested in other music. If that's of interest to you, at the age of 11 onwards I was a keen music fan. I was into some jazz and blues things. KZ: Any artist in particular? BF: Oh, I was a very big Charlie Parker fan. That was my first love, I think. After him and through him I went into (John) Coltrane and Omette Coleman, people like that. Billie Holiday, favorite singer. Then different people, Otis Redding, obviously. KZ: Your vocal style is so distinct. Do you remember any early influences when you first started singing? BF: Yes. Charlie Parker (laughs).

The Roxy KZ: You grew up in Newcastle. Is that the industrial part of England? BF: Very much so. It's a big mining region, really. There's still heavy industry as well. KZ: What would be the equivalent city here in the United States? BF: I suppose Detroit. KZ: Your album took quite a while to complete. Was it a difficult project for you? BF: Yes it was. Sometimes albums take longer than others, especially if it's a time for experiment and change, working with a lot of new people, although there was also a lot of continuity from the last couple of albums I did with Roxy Music. Half of the people are friends I've played with, some of them I've known for six years, Neil Hubbard, being one of the guitarists-one of many. Andy Newmark on drums, I've played with him for a couple of albums now. KZ Anybody that you played with for the very first time? BF: Oh yes. Nile Rodgers and Marcus Miller. KZ. Marcus Miller is a great bass player. BF: He's fantastic, yes. Also David

    11 the GAVIN REPORT/August 2, 1985

  • Sanborn, the sax player, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, those are all new people for me. KZ: Roxy Music used American musicians. Why was that? BF: That was only the final three albums, yes. Well, the last solo album I did was done with some American musicians. I don't know, it's just something about the sense of space. Ummm. I found it very good to sing to, you know? Some of the earlier records didn't really have that They're much more fast and furious and frantic, which is generally the English way. As you become more experienced, you look for other people who have these amazing skills. I just found out that there's so many skilled players who don't have to think about what they're playing. They just have this amazing technical facility and also a great feel. So ... obviously this graduates the trend. Play with better and better people all the time. Just a lot of them seem to live in America (laughs). KZ. You recorded Boys and Girls in seven different studios. BF: Oh yeah. Most of it was done in our own sort of little demo studio in London called the White House. That's just a little kind of private studio that we used. In fact, all the tracks are started at home, in my house for the first couple of months on eight track. In the end, it was all 48 track,

Legacy state-of-the-art, or whatever you call it (laughs). We mixed it up at the Power Station in New York where we mixed the last couple of Roxy albums we did. I was with the same engineer and co -producer that I worked with on the last three albums, Rhett Davies. That's another bit of continuity, if you like. Also Bob Clearmountain mixed the album again. He's great. KZ I've noticed that those are the names we see on the best sounding records. BF: Yes. KZ For having worked in so many studios, the record sounds unified. BF: That's good (laughs). KZ I'm curious as to how you compose music. Is it at home on eight track, on piano? BF: Yes, I mean all sorts of different keyboard instruments. I use a kind of electric piano quite a lot The Yamaha one, what's it called, the DX7? KZ. A popular keyboard these days. I hear it on a lot of records. BF: Then there's a thing called a (Roland) Jupiter. Whatever is laying around. We did use a Synclavier on a couple of things. I wish I had one. I'm saving up!

KZ: You mean you don't have a spare thirty-five grand laying around. BF: Not at the moment (laughs). KZ: As a kid, did you have any particular images of America? BF: The hand of plenty. I think a lot of very powerful images come over to Europe. Obviously the Flower Power thing Not that I subscribe to that much. I mean, the hippie thing sort of ... I didn't ever really get involved in that lifestyle as such. That

was one thing, and there's also the Beach Boys sort of surling image. I was always influenced by thinking about music, especially black music with that sort of hipness. You always felt America was more hip than anywhere else. KZ: So when you finally got here, what did you think? BF: (laughs) ... sort of disappointed. KZ: What did you like about America?

BF: I like the sense of power, especially in New York where the energy is very different It's much more powerful here. London is a much sleepier city. So I like to come here as much as possible to tap into that energy because where I live in England is out in the countryside, which is very quiet So I find it a contrast New York is a most extreme city. I've never really toured America that extensively. KZ: No, you never really did. BF: Whenever we did a tour, it was always the most glamorous cities. KZ. Why didn't Roxy tour more extensively? BF: I don't really like the corridor existence that you lead on a tour. Although I do like playing to a live audience. There's nothing to beat it. It's a very nice feeling, playing to an audience who likes your work. It's a very good feeling of approval for what you do. I just don't like doing a lot of them night after night, after night. I prefer being in the studio doing new work, really. KZ: So you're basically a studio artist? BF: I think so, yes. KZ Do you ever feel that America is playing catch-up ball with Roxy Music?

"We never fit into any of the existing radio formats. We

    were never heavy enough for

    rock stations or black enough

    for black stations. We always

    seemed to be in between

    different camps."

BF: It's still got a long ways to catch up. The new album went on in England at number one, which I was very pleased about So, it just takes you back a bit, coming here and finding that there's still a long way to go in terms of that sort of public awareness of your work. I have to be optimistic about it and hope that it will be a hit record, but you never know. KZ Was there something that got lost in the translation with Roxy coming across the ocean? BF: I think, possibly ... yes. The fact that Roxy Music didn't tour enough, or we weren't in enough magazines, there was never any GIANT interest in us over here. Whereas in Europe, there's always been a very strong music press on a weekly basis, in fact You found you were written about all the time, pictures and so on. People just get the message that much quicker. Over here we still haven't made the front cover of Rolling Stone. Also, the radio format is another big thing. We never fitted into any of the existing formats. We were never heavy enough for rock stations or black enough for the black stations. We always seemed to be

  • in between different camps. And there was never really a hit single. There was never anything obvious enough, it seems, for the American market They're really albums, collections of songs. KZ I'm looking at the Gavin charts and you're doing quite well on both our album charts. I figure that you're kind of underestimating your appeal. BF: I think that's possibly true. KZ: Here in the U.S., Roxy Music was very metropolitan. If you took all the metro areas across the U.S. and formed one country, possibly the band would be perceived as much bigger. Do you agree? BF: Oh yes. But we never really got through to the huge innerland ... Middle America was never really aware of what we did, I guess. KZ: But to me, Avalon just seems to smolder on, the influence of it. BF: I suppose that made it a very hard album to follow. It's always been very pleasant and surprising whenever I go to different studios. It was always somebody saying it was really good. I feel it got out to a whole different set of people. KZ.: I think Avalon set a standard. BF: Well ... thank you. What I tried with this new album, I was thinking, how am I going to improve on that? It had this sort of completeness of mood. This album, I tried to make it a little more aggressive, rhythmically. I guess I spend a lot of time trying to get the feel of each track right And it's quite complex, rhythmically. Instead of one rhythm guitar, we have three bouncing off each other. I like the interplay of people. Different styles of playing mold it all together, somehow. It takes a long time. KZ: I'm especially curious about the title track, Boys and Girls and its lyric content. As the title of the album, you interpret it one way with the cover photo. Yet when you read the words, it's kind of sad. What were you thinking when you wrote that song? BF: Well, Ws a bit about my father who died while I was making this album. I think there's also lines that went into all the other songs which happened after the event It hit me very badly. We were pretty close in a strange way. It (Boys and Girls) was the central track of the album for me and not likely to be a single. I wouldn't want the record to be a single, so I thought I would call the album that by title. Just adds a bit of spotlight to the core of the record, if you see what I mean. KZ.: It doesn't surprise me to hear you say that. Your father was a miner? BF: Well he was sort of a farmer who, in the depression, had to go and work the mines, looking after the horses under the mine, the ponies. That was his job. He was doing a country job below the ground. He was very close to animals and nature. He lived with me the last eight years in the countryside. So, he did go back to the country, eventually.

KZ: Your becoming tremendously famous in England, did that change his life, too? BF: Not really. He was a very singular type of person, totally oblivious to what went on in the world around him. He never used the telephone or drove a car or any of those things. He was a very simple man, but very strong and a strong influence on me-a very good person in that old-fashioned sense. He never really asked me about music. KZ: Really? BF: No, no. It wasn't really a part of him. He was more interested in bird song. KZ.: A lot of people associate you and your music with fashion. Yet I tend to think since 1978, that has less and less to do with your music. BF: I was thinking more and becoming more interested in the pure music side of things, I suppose. It gets to the point where you feel you aren't setting the latest haircut anymore. So, you just become a little more serious about your work. guess, of course, having gotten married has had a little bit to do with that Now I'm a father. It makes you a little bit more serious minded about the work that you do. KZ: In your early days, you did make a strong fashion statement. What do you think about bands like Duran and Spandau Ballet? I see these bands as a vaguely pale imitation. You've usually been nice about it, but don't you wonder sometimes, hearing David Sylvian sing? BF: Well, I don't really listen very much to what other people do. That's the secret. I think I'm aware that there are people and there always will be people who will follow others. Especially if you're older and so on. Generally, they're just sort of superficial similarities, I think. So, good luck to them. I think there's room for a lot of different people. KZ: When you reformed Roxy in 1978, how was it different? BF: When we reformed it at the start of the second phase, if you like? I suppose it was even less like a group than it was before. It only really felt like a group for the first year or something, you know, which was in 1972 or 1973. After that, it just became more and more like an idea for a group or just a name that we worked under. We didn't see each other outside of work or anything. When the group reformed, I felt it was just a bigger group of players than ever before. There are a lot of people I've worked with in solo projects that are still involved in the context of Roxy, there was always kind of new blood coming in. With every record, there's always new blood coming in. With every record, there's always some kind of new stimulus, a new person, changes here and there in the line-up. That kept it exciting for me. KZ Sometimes it's necessary to detach yourself from music and radio just to stay sane. BF: it gets to where you hear so much

music in your work and there's so much music running through your head that you have to just ... I find it's better for me to cut myself off when I've finished work. Not out of arrogance, but to keep your own space, keep your head clear. KZ: After the second Roxy album, what resulted in the departure of Brian Eno? BF: Well, I just felt it was one of those things where the chemistry seems to stop. It was kind of personality thing, really. Also, it was after that second album that I did my first solo album and I met Eddie Jobson, who then took Enó s place in the band. I just felt we could go further, especially on stage because Brian didn't really play on stage much. Jobson could play keyboards fluently with violin and everything. I don't know, it was just one of those things. It was good for Brian in the same way that it's good for the rest of Roxy now. They're doing their own thing. I think things got frustrating in '73 and

    e

    "I dont really like the

    corridor existence do

    tour, although 1

    audience.

certainly Phil (Manzanera) and Andy (McKay) were getting very frustrated working with me all the time. Brian did lots of good things with other people. We're sort of friends now. Phil and Andy, they've got a group called the Explorers. KZ: So what's England like these days, the political climate, things in general. BF: You tell me. I haven't seen much of it recently (laughs). It's a bit mixed up at the moment It's been like that for quite a while now ... trying to come to terms with not being rich and famous anymore. Industry is declining. It's a very peculiar place. KZ: Lots of folks have asked me to ask you about whether you'll tour. BF: The only plans I have for going on stage at the moment is the Band-Aid concert in London. KZ: What about musicians? BF: Well, Marcus (Miller) is coming over and Andy Newmark and David Gilmour. We'll have about ten in the band. We'll try to make something of it KZ: Well, come here and play a nice outdoor venue. BF: I'd love to do that r

Hollywood 19 e, at The Gavin Report,

were fortunate enough to secure an advance copy of

The Hollywood Reporter dated August 2nd 1999. Here then, fourteen years prior to public release, we share with you some items from that edition:

Aaron Spelling Productions has finally had it up to here with the annual contract holdouts by 66 -year -old DYNASTY star Joan Collins and has recast the part of the conniving Alexis with 39 -year -old ex - pop star Madonna Sedaka. The aging canary's divorce from character actor and middleweight boxer Sean Penn was final two weeks ago, at which time she wed songsmith Neil Sedaka Jr. in a garden ceremony at the home of close pal Cynthia Lauper.

In a related development, Lauper, once a recording artist herself, has been cast in the pivotal role of Ethel Mertz in MTM's remake of the fifties' I LOVE LUCY series. Six undistinguishable members of MENUDO will alternate in the Ricky characterization, and wacky ex -football handicapper Lu Fields will co-star as a zany neighbor.

Corroborating rumors rampant for some thirty years, ex-Elektra chairman Joe Smith has finally been installed as Commissioner of the National Basketball Association. In a staged photo opportunity, Smith posed at the league's offices with 52 -year -old Laker center Kareem Shapiro, recently converted from the Muslim faith.

In other sports news, 60 -year -old baseballer Pete Rose, now a designated hitter for the expansion Sri Lanka Bombers, is the subject of a continuing media -watch as he nears his milestone 8000th hit. Morley Safer Jr. will be covering the historic event for the Ted Turner -owned CBS Cable Network.

As part of its burgeoning Nostalgia Series, RKO Home Video is releasing a tape of the dimly recalled 1984 Michael Jackson

Victory Tour. The graying Jackson, now a lounge singer at the Holiday Inn in Oxnard, California, was unearthed by RKO execs and appeared at a sparsely attended press conference to plug the oldie video.

Industryites gathered this past week to honor Gavin Publisher Ron Fell at a surprise 59th birthday celebration.

Las Vegas pit boss and ex -record exec Danny Davis co -hosted the swank affair with newly named Tonight Show host Don Imus. Admirers of the now legendary journalist interfaced on the patio outside ENRICO'S RESTAURANT in San Francisco. In a fast perusal of the trendy throng, we eyeballed retired Columbia Records President George Chaltas, Honolulu environmentalist Ron (Boss Radio) Jacobs and just installed U.S. Treasurer Kal Rudman as they chatted over platters of computerized quiche and high -fiber dim sum.

Celebs in attendance included singer Crystal Gayle, sporting her recent crew cut and ex -Duran Duran stalwart Simon Le Bon, presently an aluminum siding salesman in Yankton, South Dakota. Massive plans are afoot for the 16th annual NAB/NRBA programming conference and symposium to be held this year in KUALA LAMPUR. Dozens of instructive panels are planned so that young broadcasters may profit by the successes of their experienced elders. David Grossman, now in his second decade as P.D. of WCCC in Hartford, will chair an in-depth rap session on B -Sides by such vintage groups as MOTLEY CRUE and TEARS FOR FEARS. Gavin Twins Kent and Keith Zimmerman will stun the crowd when they introduce their long lost triplet, Kermit. The three will then conduct a discussion on new Gavin Report terminology, including an explanation as to the replacement of the term, 'ALTERNATIVE ACTION' with the new nomenclature, 'UNDERGROUND'. At a giant closing day banquet, an honor roll presentation will be made to consultant John Sebastian on the

9 n occasion of his fifty-third syndication format, and the festivities will conclude with an on-stage reunion by RATT, who now enjoy individual careers as gospel performers. F.C.C. Chairman Danny T. Holiday, once a P.D. al KGOY in Foonman, Ohio will deliver the invocation.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - "Saving All My Love For You" (Arista) She gives good song. My review of the album, back on March 1st said: "Her youthful innocence is mixed with a knowingly mature approach to both arrangements and lyric." With this track, I can rest my case.
