The Palace is linked to railway history since 1941, when it was sold by the Dowager Duchess of Fernán Núñez to the Compañía Nacional de los Ferrocarriles del Oeste de España (the Spanish Western railway company). It was on that date that the Spanish railway network was nationalized and RENFE (the Spanish national railway network company) was created by law. The new company started a refurbishing in order to adapt the Palace to administrative uses and host RENFE Board of Directors. The first railway museum in Spain was located here from 1967 to 1980, and in 1985 the building became the headquarters of the Spanish Railway Foundation.

In 1815 the 7th Count of Cervellón inherited the mansion. He married the 2th Duchess of Fernán Núñez. Then, in 1847 they commissioned to the architect Martín López Aguado a major extension and remodeling project, the result of which was a beautiful Neoclassical building. The palace had the greatest splendor period and became one of the most emblematic buildings of Madrid Romantic Era and one of the main places of social life in town with María del Pilar Loreto and Manuel Falcó d’Adda, as Duchess and Duke of Fernán Núñez.

The Spanish Railway Foundation was created in 1985 and has its headquarters in Fernán Núñez Palace, located in Madrid artistic and cultural heart, very close to the Reina Sofía Museum. The Palace is a monumental building of artistic and historical value and presently is owned by Adif (the Spanish rail infrastructure manager) and Renfe Operadora (the main Spanish railway undertaking).

The buildingThe story of the Palace began in 1790, when the 13th Duke of Alburquerque and 4th Marquis de la Mina bought a house on this place and converted it in a “big house, suitably for a Spanish Grandee”.
