Welcome to the City of Ferndale, the place to be in beautiful Whatcom County. Whether you came for businesses or pleasure, I hope your stay is enjoy-able. With glorious vistas, exceptional recreational activities, and some of the friendliest people in the world, Ferndale is a city on the move and should you decide to make Ferndale your permanent residence, welcome home!

As you will see in this publication, Ferndale and Whatcom County has much to offer – from breath-taking hikes in the mountains to romantic sunset sails on the water. Should the great outdoors not be your passion, you will find excellent restaurants, energetic night-life, and varied shopping experiences waiting for you. No matter your tastes, you will find it all here.

Ferndale is a perfect place to raise a family, start or expand a business or just kick back and relax.

Few places offer skiing in the morning, sun bathing in the afternoon and wine tasking in the evening. With the hustle and bustle of Seattle or Vancouver BC just a short drive away, you can have it all in the City of Ferndale.

The year 2012 will be an exciting time in Ferndale. The City continues to grow with more people dis-covering our superior schools, slower pace of life, and citizens who know how to enjoy life. You will soon discover why people are so proud to say “We are from Ferndale”.

I hope your stay in our great city is memorable.

WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF FERNDALEWelcome and please come visit our city. Ferndale

is a small city of a little more than 11,000 residents, a city where you can walk our downtown from the visitor center and find friendly neighbors who will still look you in the eye and offer a smile!

A short walk along Main Street will bring you to our Centennial Riverwalk Park alongside the Nooksack River. You can enjoy a beautiful vista of nearby Mount Baker while the river rolls slowly by. Public restrooms are available and on a warm day we encourage a dip in the fountain! Enjoy the artwork from national artist Lori Nozick entitled “Riverwalk Markers and Monoliths.” The artwork was created from materials excavated from this historic site and residents helped place those materials in the art.

Give your pet a short break in our adjacent Vanderyacht Park where they can enjoy the off-leash dog park with river access. A disc golf course may extend your stay.

At the southern end of the Riverwalk is historic Pioneer Park. Our costumed tour guides, dressed in period costumes are ready to show you our entire Pioneer Village, including a church, school and coun-try store. Make sure to find the authentic “outdoor bathroom.”

On behalf of all citizens of the City of Ferndale, we sincerely look forward to seeing you!

Ferndale is a magnificent city 15 miles south of the Canadian border and 5 miles north of Bellingham, Washington. The city is filled with some of the most beautiful and diversified land in the world. Well known for its all-year “green,” Ferndale has become a popular destination for not only retirees from around the United States and Canada, but also for young families starting out. Many times it can be heard, “I came here for a visit and never left.”

Mount Baker sits to the east and breathtaking views of the mountain can be seen from various vantage points throughout Ferndale. People from all over the world come to hike, ski, snowboard and picnic on this mountain. In May, hundreds of people take part in the annual Ski to Sea race which starts on top of the mountain and travels through Ferndale to Bellingham.

Within Ferndale are historical destination parks and access to the Nooksack River. Lush farmland, an award-winning school system, relaxed small-town friendliness, and an opportunity for a positive and full quality of life, also add to the charm. As business and industry grows, the array of job opportunities also expands.

Ferndale offers small town friendliness while providing big-town opportunities for residents and visitors.

Agriculture & Farming

Ferndale is well-known for being “farm country,” and even amid the explosion of new home developments, Ferndale has maintained its long love of the land and farming. One of the ad-vantages of living in or near Ferndale is the number of roadside fruit and vegetable stands and visitor-friendly farms.

The Lummi Tribe were natives in our area and found the climate to be moderate and the soil rich, and today’s farming connects our generation to past generations.

Throughout Whatcom County there are 521 miles of fish habitat streams. In recent years farmers have enhanced these streams by planting Douglas fir seedlings and native plant vegetation.

Dairy farming became popular around the 1900’s and by 1930 dairies averaged 40 acres and fewer than 40 cows. Currently, the average dairy is 250 acres with 300 cows. Whatcom County is the first in the nation in milk production per cow. Two Ferndale farms also raise and sell bison for meat.

Berries are a large part of local agriculture. Whatcom County grows approximately 84 percent of all the frozen raspberries in Washington, and 65 percent in the nation. Strawberries are grown and processed locally for national brands. There are more than 1500 acres of blueberries harvested annually, and an estimated additional 400 acres in upcoming years.

Raspberries and blueberries are picked by mechanical harvest-ers, and strawberries are exclusively hand-picked. Berries are also sold along roadside stands throughout Ferndale and in many grocery stores.

There are more than 100 acres of commercial orchards in What-com County and those orchards produce more than 1,110 tons of apples each year. Other crops include corn, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and more. Christmas tree farms, tree farms for pulp and paper, and fresh flowers top off the leaders of local agriculture. The county leads the state of Washington in certified seed potatoes. These are used to plant commercial crops elsewhere.

Ferndale Heritage Society

Have you always had a secret passion for local history, or maybe dressing up in vintage clothing, or just looking to doing worth-while volunteering in your community? Then you should give serious consideration to getting involved with one of the most active and enjoyable groups in Ferndale, the Ferndale Heritage Society.

The Ferndale Heritage So-c ie t y ’s M i s -sion Statement clearly states the purpose of this organiza-tion.

The business and purpose of the organi-zation shall be to educate the c o m m u n i t y on the history of W h atcom County, promote Pioneer Park and tourism, and bring together those people interested in preserving history and maintaining the log cabins and the collections at Pioneer Park. The Ferndale Heritage Society’s major function will be to discover, collect and maintain any material, which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area.

Pioneer Park has historic log cabin structures that were con-structed with volunteer labor, some were originally built more than 100 years ago and require ongoing maintenance to preserve their integrity and beauty. These buildings are used by The Ferndale Heritage Society and/or the Pioneer Park tour guides to support tourism. Guided tours of Pioneer Park and the Gift Shop take place each summer from May 15 to September 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

Pioneer Park supports activities year round for many community groups such as the Old Settler’s Association, local car groups and youth programs.

The Heritage Society members accomplish many projects of upkeep, improvement and preservation of the historical values at Pioneer Park. The Larson cabin, our newest “old” cabin to the park was completely finished on the inside and decorated to the theme of what would have been a trappers dwelling and thus referred to as the bachelor’s pad. Two other recent projects were a new cedar shake roof installed on the schoolhouse and the lifting of the whole Foster log cabin in preparation for a new foundation and floor.

The Heritage Society members take care of the flower beds and planters making the park a beautiful place to visit. They hold several events during the year and our 140 members of the Ferndale Heri-tage Society help host the cabins during such times. They wear pe-riod costumes and tell the history of the cabin we are hosting. In the

spring they have an education pro-gram for second and third graders where they learn to make candles, grind corn, split shakes and other tasks that pio-neer children did. Many volunteers from the Heritage Society and local community help to make this hap-pen.

The other annual events put on by the Heritage Society include the Dinner Theater in September and the Olde Fashioned Christmas event held the first weekend in December. This event includes tours of the decorated cabins with costumed tour guides, horse drawn wagon rides, refreshments, and a hands-on craft items for children to make in the cabins.

The Ferndale Heritage Society is open to everyone and is a great place to make new friends. The Heritage Society meets the last Tuesday of the month at the Tillicum House at Pioneer Park at 7 p.m. They have a guest speaker or program and great refreshments at every meeting.

Both the Log Cabin Church and the Tillicum House can be rented for your private family, work, or group weekly or monthly meet-ings or events. Your guests will be impressed with the beauty of our park, every season of the year.

For more information about the Ferndale Heritage Society or rent-als, please check us out at www.ferndaleheritagesociety.com or call Pioneer Park at 384-6461. Come meet us, we look forward to meeting you.

Murals give downtown Fern-dale a unique ambiance and range in theme from a Mexican cantina, farm land, pioneer scenes and more. To enjoy these scenes, park near the post of-fice at the corner of Fourth and Main streets. Most murals are on the north side of the street.

First: View the mural painted on the side of the Ferndale post office. This mural includes a cigar shop, general store, post office, bakery and car.

Second: Walk east on the north side of the street and visit the mural on the west side of “Hot” Dogz at 2954 Main Street. The mural depicts a porch and back yard scene, including clothes hanging on a clothesline and a tree.

Third: Next to “Hot” Dogz is the continuation of the mural. This mural includes a barn, patriotic kite flying and more.

Fourth: Continue walking east on Main Street and stop at 2038 Main Street. In the alley next to Babe’s Place is a mural of a mountainous region along with a farm scene. Also included is a gift store window, flowers, a church, pond and trees.

Fifth: In the alley next to Las Cazuelas Restaurant at 2012 main St., is a colorful mural of an authentic Mexican cantina. The artist found the picture in a magazine and adapted it to portray what the restaurant wanted. Continue through the alley to the City Hall Annex, where you will find the colorful mural designed by Ferndale and Lummi youth (pictured below).

Sixth: On the east side of the Ferndale Record-Journal building at 2008 Main St., as seen when entering Ferndale’s downtown, is a mural depicting Pioneer Park and includes horses and Mount Baker in the background.

Seventh: Under the railroad bridge on Main Street, Fern-dale High School students painted this mural in 1995. Co-sponsored by the Whatcom County Cruising Association, this is a creative look at old film legends.

Self-guided totem pole tour:Totem poles are important to Ferndale because of the Lummi Nation heritage and culture. Totem poles have always been an important part of tribal life and the to-tems are an integral part of their personal identity. The totem poles are carved from mature cedar trees.

Unlike the mural tour, the totem poles are spread out and you will need to drive to see the ones that are located outside of the downtown area.

First: Located at 2222 Main St., the Ferndale public library

has a large totem pole between the parking area and the front entrance. It originally stood at the entrance to the Mobile Oil Refinery for 34 years. Carved by Lummi Nation spokesperson, Joseph Raymond Hillaire, it was presented to the refinery in 1954. Representing the close relationship between the Lummi tribe, the refinery, and the City of Ferndale, it was donated to the city in 1994 by the Mobile Annuitant’s Group.

Second: At Moles funeral home, located at 2019 Main St., James Jewell and his wife Ramona, carved this raven totem pole in remembrance of his mother and to honor Moles for their 60 years of service to the community.

Third: At the corner of Main and Second streets, in front of the U.S. bank, is a towering totem pole featuring an eagle, canoe, beaver and more.

Fourth: Centennial Riverwalk Park, along the Nooksack River. The first totem pole, “Log Jam,” the largest of the three, is a 26-feet tall Washington State Parks Commis-sion donated Old Growth Fir. The two other totems, both 20-feet tall, were constructed out of U.S. Forest Service do-nated Western Red Cedars and share a two-part traditional coast Salish story of the convergence of man and salmon.

Totem poles to drive to: Other totem poles can be found by going south on Lummi View Dr., past Gooseberry Point. Totem poles are located throughout the reserva-tion, but most of the larger ones can be found in front of Little Bear Creek at 2400 Lummi View Dr., the entrance to the Lummi community building, WEX-LI em, and inside the community building itself. To learn more about the Lummi Nation, totem poles, celebrations, culture and more, visit the website: members.aol.com/bkdonnclass/NWIndianlife.html.

Public Safety

FERNDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department has a 100-year history and tradition of excellence in public safety services. As part of our overall emergency planning, the police department recently began the conversion of a retired medical unit into a mobile command and communica-tions vehicle. Picture here, this state-of-the-art communications platform is being constructed almost entirely from federal and state grant funds, as well as the efforts of generous volunteers, and when completed will provide for the continuation of public safety services to the citizens of Ferndale during a disaster should telephone service and other emergency communication channels be temporarily interrupted. Although advanced technologies such as this mobile command vehicle have improved are effectiveness in many areas of our operations, we are always mindful that our greatest strength and most important asset is the strong and sup-portive bond we have with our community.

Michael F. Knapp Chief of police for the City of Ferndale www.ferndalepd.org

cultural component along with its academic program, and is home of the state championship Blackhawk football team. Our students learning is facilitated by more than 301 dedicated teachers and supported by a host of caring counselors, community coordinators, nurses, secretaries, tutors, coaches, custodians, lunchroom workers, bus drivers, volunteers, principals, and school board members. Each of Ferndale’s seven elementary schools -- which range in size from Cascadia (with over 500 students) to tiny Beach School on Lummi Island (with fewer than 50 students) – has a strong academic core, a variety of music and art opportunities, an active parent group, and programs for learners with unique learning needs including a wide range of special education services and a widely acclaimed Aiming High program for academically gifted students. Because we recognize the critical value of early learning, we allocate a substantial portion of our precious (and scarce) resources to provide free full-day kinder-garten for every child. Ferndale’s two middle schools offer small, personalized settings for young adolescents at a time when they are experiencing many physical, emotional, and intellectual transitions. In addition to regular academic coursework, programs for our middle level students include music, art, world language, an array of extracurricular athletic teams, a number of extended learning activities like Math Olympiad, Student Council, Natural Helpers, AVID, and Aiming High. Currently our middle school educators are engaged in expanding their programs to include 6th graders in the fall of 2013, when our district-wide grade configuration will transition from K-6 and 7-8 schools to K-5 and 6-8 schools, a design that more closely aligns with state learning guidelines and also makes the best use of our facilities and other instructional resources.Ferndale High, Home of the Golden Eagles, is the largest high school in Whatcom County. Two of the last four years, FHS has been named a Washington School of Distinction, one of small number to win this prestigious award twice. Students at Ferndale High School have the opportunity to take eight classes per semester -- two more than the traditional six – allowing them to take advantage of a rich and varied menu of course offerings. The high school includes 11 advanced place-ment programs, several world languages, various honors and college preparatory classes, four sections of AVID, and a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program aimed at preparing students for the current and future job market. Computer-assisted drafting (CAD), digital communications, business and marketing, welding, a range of highly regarded agriculture offerings, and an innovative power and energy program form the core of CTE at Ferndale High. Ferndale schools are also well known for their award-winning music, art, and drama programs and the talented instructors who lead them. We regularly field excellent athletic teams and turn out superior ath-letes (like NFL quarterback Jake Locker and punter Michael Koenig)

under the direction of skillful and caring coaches. We provide a multi-faceted extracurricular program involving nearly 1,000 students per year. In addition to the comprehensive program at Ferndale High School, our District offers two small school options -- Windward and Clearview -- for students who desire something other than the traditional high school setting. Hallmarks of the Windward program include a strong advisory program, focus on relationships and community-building, emphasis on service learning and leadership, high levels of parent involvement, and multiple opportunities for students to exercise voice and choice. Clearview is for students who need a personally designed learning route, sometimes because they have obligations beyond school that make it impossible for them to attend a regular schedule, some-times because they have fallen behind and wish to make up credits. The Clearview program consists of on-line coursework supported by a caring teacher/case manager. Ferndale students also benefit from the District’s proximity to four colleges: Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community Col-lege, Northwest Indian College, and Western Washington University. Through Running Start and more than a dozen articulation agree-ments, students can get a jumpstart on earning college credits while still in high school. Through the generosity of our community, many of the high school population will enroll in college and universities to continue their learning. The Ferndale staff models lifelong learning for their students. All of our teachers are “highly qualified” according to federal and state guidelines. Over 65% of them have master’s degrees and 29 have earned National Board Certification. The Ferndale community supports its children in a variety of ways. Many individuals volunteer their time and expertise to assist student learning. The citizens as a whole have consistently voted for school levies to fund school programs. Four years ago, they passed a six-year technology levy to ensure students and staff have access to up-to-date learning tools. The Ferndale school board is made up of five dedicated leaders who care deeply about children and their education, as evidenced by the five Strategic Commitments they have set to guide the work of the district. The deliberations of the school board are available on our District website at www.ferndale.wednet.edu, which also includes a great deal of other interesting information. The people of Ferndale are definitely the School District’s greatest resource, and the 4,800 children who attend our schools are the Dis-trict’s most valuable treasure. Providing the highest quality education to every one of them is our mission and our passion. In Ferndale we say that “it’s a matter of pride.”If you have questions, or if you would like to arrange a tour of our schools, please contact our public information office at 360-383-9207.

With input from staff, the Ferndale School Board has established the following five commitments to guide the work of our district:

Commitment to Enhancing Student Learning and Development: We recognize that nurturing the development and maximizing the learn-ing of all children entrusted to our care is our highest mission. There-fore, everything we do must be focused on achieving these ends.

Commitment to Communicating Openly and Effectively: We know that good communication is vital to the success of any organization. For our public school system, regular, transparent, inclusive, two-way communication is critical at all levels – with students, staff, parents and community members.

Commitment to Managing Resources Responsibly and Productively: We believe the way we allocate resources significantly impacts our ability to serve the growth and learning needs of children. Therefore, we are dedicated to the careful use of all resources -- people, time, facili-ties, and money, along with other less tangible but essential resources like trust, vision, ideas, energy, and hope.

Commitment to Honoring, Celebrating, and Embracing Our Diverse Community: We understand that our public schools belong to our en-tire community, and our diversity makes us stronger. To capitalize on this strength, we are dedicated to energizing and integrating all aspects of our community in support of our children and their learning.

Commitment to Equity and Equal Opportunity: We believe our district cannot be truly excellent if it is not also equitable. In a democratic so-ciety built on values of fairness and justice, the concept of educational excellence must encompass not only high-quality educational opportu-nities for all students, but also high-level outcomes for all students.

School Board members also realized that each of our five commit-ments needs to be carried out with two critical ideas always in mind – Relationships and Results. They put these two ideas at the center of all of our work.

A focus on Relationships means we acknowledge the importance of the human dimension in everything we do. We are first and foremost a people business. Every statistic, every test score, every number rep-resents an individual child, a particular teacher, a staff member, and/or the family members who care about them.

A focus on Results means that we understand our obligation to use the authority and resources entrusted to us to achieve the best pos-sible education for all of the children we serve. It is our responsibility to focus on the quality of the outcomes that result from our decisions and efforts.

History of Ferndale

Ferndale garners its roots from the Lummi Tribe who called the land “Te-tas-um,” which meant, “the crossing place above Lummi.” The native culture is still alive today as seen throughout Ferndale, with displays of Totem Poles, weaved baskets and more. Many from the Lummi Nation continue to fish and harvest shell fish just as their ancestors did generation after generation.

The city of Ferndale was founded in the 1800’s with the name, “Jam.” This was in reference to the nearby two-mile log jam on the Nooksack River.

Alice Eldridge, the first school teacher, was the first to call the town Ferndale. She admired the lush green ferns that surrounded the schoolhouse. This was characteristic of the Indian culture where names of sites and areas oftentimes described the site itself. As people moved to the area the name stuck.

The first pioneer family to settle in Ferndale was a Texan named Billy Clark, and his Native American wife Cecilia Chanique. In 1873, they built a cabin near the Nooksack River and lived there for more than 10 years. Because Clark had to give up his citizenship in order to work for the Hudson Bay Company in Canada, he was not the first legal owner of any property in Ferndale.

Darius Rogers, Clark’s old friend, filed claim to 174 acres. Along with his brother, Rogers opened the first business in Ferndale. This included a hotel and later a store. After a steamboat enterprise failed he moved to the west side of the river. The post office, which was a cedar log building that Rogers built, along with some residents and merchants, also moved to the west side.

By 1882, Ferndale was the third largest town in Whatcom County and had two stores, a hotel, two saloons and a post office.Custer is located near Ferndale and has an el-ementary school, post office and several down-town businesses. Custer’s boundaries merge with Ferndale’s boundaries. Custer is a quaint area where farm land is prevalent. Originally, the town was located at the intersection of the current Valley View and Bay roads, but in 1890-1892 the town moved to accommodate the railroad. The railroad continues to run through the town today. Custer was named after its first postmaster, Albert W. Custer.

The Lummi Nation traditionally lived near the sea and in the mountain areas that surrounded Ferndale, and spoke the Salishan language. The tribe smoke-dried seafood, camas bulbs and sun-dried berries, and ate all species of shell fish, crab, salmon, trout, elk, deer and

other land and sea mammals. They expressed their language, family heritage and religious traditions through their totem pole carvings. The reservation is a 5-mile long peninsula which is surrounded by Lummi Bay on the west, Bellingham Bay on the east, the smaller peninsula of Sandy Point, Portage Island and the associated tidelands.

Interesting facts: Loretta Lynn once was a resident of Custer. Early in her career she began performing at Bob’s Tavern on Portal Way, north of Custer.

According to the Ferndale Chamber of Com-merce, Ferndale was once home to a company which sold UFO alarms. These alarms were devised to detect unidentified flying objects. The company went out of business.

Neighborhood & Destination Parks

Neighborhood parks give individuals, groups and families an opportunity to take part in recreational activities near their home. Schools also provide a resource for outdoor activities and all Ferndale elementary schools include a field and play equipment. Most of the schools also have a covered play area with basketball hoops and some have special structures like Mountain View’s three-story tower, and North Bellingham’s tree house.

Bender neighborhood park is located off of Thornton Road, near Eagleridge Elementary School and Clearview High School.

Cedar Creek neighborhood park is located off of Sunshine Drive and Tyler Lane. It is a 3.5-acre park with half-court basketball, picnic tables, a large field, a creek and play-ground. This park was a result of land dedications in 1977, 1989 and 1995.

Flair neighborhood park was dedicated to the city in 1971 and renovated in 2001. It has half-court basketball, picnic tables and shade trees on 1.5 acres of land. The park is lo-cated on Poplar Place, off of Douglas Road.

Glacier View Natural Resource Area is a nature area that includes a 4-acre parcel of wetland. Dedicated to the city in 1993, this park has views of Mount Baker to the east. It can be accessed off of Thornton Road and sits along the north side of Glacier Place.

Hastings City Park was donated to the city in the 1950’s. This park overlooks the east side of the Nooksack River and has parking, two picnic tables and a flat grassy open play area. It is an excellent park for downtown business people to enjoy their lunch because of its proximity to the downtown district, the Oxford Carnation businesses, and other businesses to the east.

Horizon View neighborhood park is a small one-acre park acquired by the City of Ferndale in 1993. It is an open play area with shade trees located off of Thornton Road and Cascade Drive.

Michael Moore neighborhood park was dedicated to the City of Ferndale in 1999. It sits on 3.5 acres and includes half-court basketball and playground equipment. It is located at the corner of W. Smith Road and Shields Drive.

Oxford neighborhood park is located off of Malloy Street, near Oxford Court. It has half-court basketball, one picnic table, playground equipment, two benches, a play field and a creek. It was dedicated to the City of Ferndale in 1991.

Vista Ridge is a neighborhood park located on Fulton Street, off of Thornton Road. This 2.25-acre park was dedicated in 2001 and has half-court basketball and playground equip-ment. There is limited parking. The park is located on the north side of Fulton Street.

Neighborhood & Destination Parks

Hovander Homestead Park is located on Neilsen Road. It includes a turn-of-the-century farmhouse, barn, garden, Veterans Memorial, access to the Nooksack River, farm animals and equipment, and several large fields.

This destination park is well-known for the spectacular views of Mount Baker with the

Centennial Plaza and Riverwalk Park is Ferndale’s newest pride. Hemmed in between the Nooksack River, neighboring streets and Ferndale’s downtown district, this newly developed area offers a variety of cultural sights.Views of the Nooksack River along the river walk are splendid es-pecially in autumn when the leaves are changing, or in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom. The plaza hosts a fountain, flag pole, year-round foliage, and a permanent art display chosen from local artwork. Totem poles are also featured and bring the strong influence of Ferndale’s heritage of the Lummi Nation to the plaza. The plaza is located in downtown Ferndale on the west side of the bridge. Plan to spend time admiring the artwork, the sights and sounds, and then take a stroll down the river walk and enjoy views of the river, foliage, birds and sights of nature.

fields, chicken coops and a variety of ani-mals in the foreground. The homestead is a 60-acre farm that has walking trails, fishing access, picnic tables and historic structures like the old water tower.

A working garden sits to the north side of the house, and all the food grown there is

given to the food bank. Several master gar-dener gardens are on-site, near the house, and have descriptive signs to designate what each plant is.

The farm includes horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, hens, turkeys, peacocks, rabbits and more. Many of these animals are on loan to the park for the sum-mer months and return to their home farms in the winter.

Authentic farm equipment can be found on display in the barn, in the covered shed and throughout the park. Larger equipment is se-cured to the ground so children can climb on them and get the feel of what it was like to be a farmer. Equipment in the barn and shed are for display only.

In 1901 Hugo Hovander laid the first brickwork, including chimneys and a fireplace, which burned six-foot logs. The next year, carpenters worked with 52,000 board feet of native fir to frame, roof and side the home.

Virtually every detail crafted by Hovander and his sons remain intact today. The inside of the Hovander house has been restored to its original elegant state.

In June 1971, the park was dedicated, and in Oc-tober 1974 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Along with being a destination park for hikers, pic-nickers, weddings and family reunions, Hovander Homestead Park also hosts the antique farm fair, the civil war re-enactment, master gardener plant sale, paws-a-thon, as well as other events.

Tours are available noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, June through Labor Day.

Tennant Lake and Fragrance Garden Interpretive Center is 200 acres of marshy habitat. The park is located at 5236 Nielsen Avenue, near Hovander Homestead Park.

Neighborhood & Destination Parks

Tennant Lake Interpretive Center and Boardwalk

Tennant Lake Interpretive Center and Boardwalk offers access to the lake by walking a trail winding southeast from the tower. Portions of the lake can be seen from the boardwalk through the marsh. Due to a high population of lily pads, this portion of the lake is used for viewing only. Once at the lake, there are benches on a small dock so visitors can sit quietly and watch birds, frogs and other wildlife.

Pioneer ParkNestled within the City of Ferndale is an irreplaceable treasure called Pioneer Park. The Park represents one of the finest collections of original pioneer log cabins and contents in the Northwest. These eleven log cabins, built by the early pioneers of Whatcom County, sat alone in the early forests and rough clearings. Left to deteriorate they had an opportunity for a new life at Pioneer Park. To save them from destruction they were moved from various locations over the course of several decades to this site next to the Nooksack River. Other may be added in the future.

The public may view and tour these historic buildings in a village setting, very much like the environment in which they were originally built. Cab-ins over 100 years old illustrate vividly the strength and determination of the pioneer settlers who pushed back huge towering forests and fashioned dwell-ings from these enormous trees.

Pioneer Park provides a rare oppor-tunity for an excursion into by-gone days, showing in tangible and inspiring ways the remarkable lives of Whatcom County’s Pioneer ancestors.

Tours and ProgramsThe City of Ferndale owns and main-tains the Park and the Ferndale Heritage Society coordinates tours, utilizing his-torically trained interpreters for group and school tours. Any visitor, whether part of an organized group or not, may follow a self guided tour or ask for a staff person available during open hours. Guides wear period costumes while showing an extensive display of genuine artifacts throughout the Park.

LAKES and RIVERS

Lake Terrell is located west of the Ferndale city limits, off of Mountain View and Lake Terrell roads. It offers spectacular views of Mount Baker in the distance over the lake from the fishing areas. There is a nice boat launch area and two fishing docks. The area is peaceful, even with many people. The park offers maintained trails, in-season duck hunting and fishing. There is handicapped parking, boat trailer parking and a restroom.

The Nooksack River is a favorite for ca-

noeing and fishing. The river runs north to south through Ferndale and can be ac-cessed at the boat launch off of Ferndale Road and through a trail at Hovander Homestead Park. When the river is low it also can be accessed using steep 10 to 15-foot trails at Vanderyacht Park. The canoe leg of the Ski to Sea race takes place on this river from Everson to Ferndale. Canoeists pass Vanderyacht and Hastings parks, travel under the Ferndale bridge, and reach the pass-off to the bicyclists at Hovander Homestead Park.

The park is owned by the Whatcom County parks system and includes interpretive signs and maps that interpret the sur-rounding flora, fauna and other natural processes at work at Tennant Lake.

Visitors often enjoy this as a destination park because it offers views of Mount Baker, a boardwalk through a marsh near the lake, access to Tennant Lake, the tall tower and Fragrance Garden.

The Neilsen farm has been adapted as an interpretive center for the environment in and around Tennant Lake. The farm house has two rooms that provide hands-on activities for children.

Fragrance Garden has raised flower beds containing more than 200 plants, surrounded by a wheelchair accessible walkway.

The tower offers views of the entire area from the top, and on the ground floor are tower-top cameras where the images are displayed on screens so visitors can see the views without having to walk up the stairs.

The park offers seasonal educational programs. For information about pro-grams, hours and more, call 360-384-3064 or visit www.co.whatcom.wa.us/parks/tennantlake.

Vanderyacht City Park is located along the Nooksack River in a residential area near downtown Ferndale. This 13-acre park offers a beautiful scenic walk along a half-mile interpretive trail adjacent to the river and a large pond. The park’s high-lights are its serenity, access to the river, and the views of the large smoke stack you

can see across the river, towering above the trees. There are benches, barbecue grills and a large grassy field.

FISHINGThe most common fishing in Ferndale is done at Lake Terrell where there is a boat launch area and two fishing docks. The best fishing is by boat at the center of the lake or near the lily pads. You must have a fishing license and parking pass.

Another fishing favorite is the Nooksack River, which is accessible at the boat launch area off of Ferndale Road, at Hovander Home-stead Park and Vanderyacht Park. No parking pass is required but a fishing license is strictly enforced.

Brennan Pond is a favorite for those who enjoy packing their gear through the woods and tall grassy areas from Slater Road to the water. Once there, it can be muddy and only room for a few fishermen at a time, but many locals choose this location for the challenge of the hike and the hopes of secluded fishing. Park in the small lot on the north side of Slater Road near the railroad tracks. Depending on the season, the path can be clearly defined or somewhat overgrown.

Tennant Lake is difficult to utilize as a fishing area due to the dense population of lily pads that fill the lake. A boat launch near Fragrance Garden will accommodate a small canoe or raft certain times of the year. Visitors are asked to respect the beavers, muskrats and other animals that make their home there.

Fishing licenses can be purchased at the Ferndale Cost Cutter, located at 1750 LaBounty Road (384-1464)

HIKINGAlcoa Intalco archery range: This trail is used for hiking and archery. Parking permits are required. It is located at the corner of Douglas and Lake Terrell roads.

Coast Millennium trail: The portion of this trail that runs through Ferndale, starts to the west on Douglas Road. Follow the road east on Douglas Drive to the city limits and then right on Main Street to downtown. Turn south/right on Nielsen Ave., immediately before the railroad bridge. At this point there are two ways to go. First, follow the signs to the boat launch area, continuing on the path near the river that goes around the west side of Hovander Homestead Park. Continue to follow the river, passing Brennan Pond and exiting at the parking area on Slater road. An alternative route is to follow Nielsen Ave. south from Main Street, passing the entrances to Hovander Park and Fra-grance Garden, and continuing until the trail merges with the above trail along the Nooksack River.

Dike Loop: Hikers can explore open meadows and wetlands,

and observe warbler, sparrows, wrens, woodpecker and birds of prey on a six-mile hike through Hovander Homestead Park, Tennant Lake and the Nooksack River dike. Park at either Hovander or Tennant Lake and follow the trail along the dike that connects the two.

Lake Terrell: Trails throughout the wildlife refuge area go around parts of the lake. Some areas are graveled and used by hunters when there is in-season hunting. When hunting is out of season, these trails are used to see the lake, and view birds and wildlife. One trail starts to the northeast of the parking lot and goes to the fishing dock. A maze of other trails can be accessed just as you enter the park. To get there, follow Mountain View Road west and then turn right on Lake Terrell Road.

Northwest Soccer Park Trail: 1.1 mile loop. Follow a nonde-script trek around the perimeter of the grass soccer fields. A quarter-mile section turns south, through the meadow between the public works buildings and the baseball fields. Located at the corner of Smith and Northwest roads to the east of the Ferndale city limits.

Slater to Brennan Pond: This trail is used mainly for people wanting to fish, but the trail is an excellent hike through the woods and fields. Park near the railroad tracks on Slater Road and go through the gate. The trail is not always clearly defined depending on weather conditions. Parking pass is required.

Tennant Marsh Boardwalk: This is one of the local favorites. The boardwalk weaves throughout the marsh of Tennant Lake and interpretive signs tell of plants and birds you may see. In the rainy weather water may almost level with the board-walk, so close attention to footing is important. This area is closed when the area is flooded. The parking lot is located on Nielsen Road.
