• Ferment-ation

• When oxygen levels are low, cells can’t use aerobic processes, like cellular respiration.

• Instead, they switch to anaerobic processes to make ATP (energy).

• Glycolysis is anaerobic, but it needs to recharge after each cycle.

• Ferment-ation

• Fermentation is the process that allows glycolysis to continue.

• After glycolysis breaks glucose into 2 pyruvates, fermentation happens.

• During fermentation, pyruvate is converted to one of either two things:• Lactic acid (in animals)• Ethanol (in plants and fungi)
