Ferdinand Ries: a preliminary list of correspondence

The large number of available letters of Ferdinand Ries (1784—1838) are an interest

ing and useful source of information both of Ries's life and work and of the musical life

of the times. Factual information of a widely varied sort, comments on music, and

opinions of people provide a picture of early nineteenth-century life from the standpoint of a man of considerable talent who was born into a typically eighteenth-century environ

ment and who managed to benefit greatly from that nineteenth-century bourgois society which was a feature of Regency England, in which Ries spent some years. It would not be

unfair to Ries the musician and composer to say that his letters are of greater interest to

musicologists than his music. It is not the present purpose to discuss the contents of

them, but to attempt through this preliminary list to identify and locate as much as

possible of Ries's correspondence as a step towards an edition.

Those who have read any part of Beethoven's conversation books are bound to regret the absence of Beethoven's part of the dialogues, though sometimes one can guess what

was said. Similarly, a correspondence is two-sided, and often to understand fully some of

the points in a letter, one needs those received by its writer. Therefore, all the letters

known to have been written to Ries, as well as those written by him, have been listed

below. In one or two cases, a letter written on Ries's behalf t* or principally by his wife

has been listed also.

Despite the obvious risks and shortcomings, one can rely on information in the surviv

ing letters to identify missing letters. In many cases it is a simple matter, since Ries often

acknowledged the receipt of letters by date; where he gives no date, one can usually determine the approximate date from a stated date of receipt, a postmark, or the frequen

cy of the correspondence. Some recipients also noted the dates of replies on the address

face. Occasionally Ries enquired whether a letter of his had been received, whether or not

he gave its date. However, one must admit that some of the dates given below are

,guesstimates' that might be inaccurate by a month or more.

It is not possible to completely reconstruct Ries's correspondence. Letters to numer

ous individuals have not come to light, and other correspondence does not yield sufficient

information to aid the reconstruction. Archives of publishers and dealers with whom he

did business are either incomplete or altogether missing; some, such as Simrock's and

Kistner's, were destroyed in World War II. Letters between members of the family, with

the exception of one from Ries to Hubert Ries of 8 September 1831 and most of those to

Joseph Ries in London, are missing and are often hard to identify; while it is highly likely that most of the information that circulated did so by letter, one suspects that a consider

able portion of it was transmitted by the word of Ries's many visitors. After his death the

family seems not to have preserved all the letters he received, with the exception of some

of those written by Beethoven. Beethoven ended his letter to Ries of September 18142,

written after a long silence that may have gone back to 18093 : „Do write once again to

your true friend". Between that request and Beethoven's letter of 22 November 18154

several unidentifiable letters passed between them; and there were certainly others around

May-June 1816 and the Autumn of 1818, and possibly the odd letter around 1810—11.

The correspondence seems to have been irregular, and Beethoven sometimes complained

that Ries did not write to him, a complaint that others might also have made with some

justification.

On the other hand Ries reported losing letters in the post. He informed Mannerhierta, the Stockholm music dealer, on 9 July 1813, that he had been generally unlucky with

letters. He had received two from St. Petersburg earlier in the year and had replied to

them, but his replies had not been received. Which letter, if any, conveyed this informa

tion to Ries is not known. There are other references to postal losses in the letters listed

below5.

Ries seems to have kept his correspondence in some sort of order, and clearly he

retained copies of some letters. Early in November 1834 he was able to write to Cramer, Addison and Beale quoting that of 13 March 1825, the text of which he gave to Joseph Ries on 10 November 1834. At the same time he was able to quote from his letter to the

same firm of 10 August 1833, correcting two mistakes. On 25 June 1834 he referred to

one from his former pupil, Loder, which he could no longer find.

Only a few of Ries's letters have been published hitherto. Nine extracts from those to

Simrock appeared in 19296 ; and nine extracts from those to Gottfried Weber appeared in

19097. Of those written to him, only those from Beethoven have been published8. The

bulk of the unpublished letters is a large number comprising almost all Ries's share of a

continuous correspondence between himself and his brother Joseph, who worked for the

Broadwood house in London for many years, and covering the period from mid 1824 to

the end of 1837, three weeks before Ries's death. These, along with other family letters and documents, are preserved in British Museum Additional Manuscript 33.507.

In the list below the information for each letter is given under six headings: its date; the writer's name (mostly by surname only); the town in which it was written; the name of the addressee; the town to which it appears to have been sent; and lastly, its present location and call number or other identification, or, placed in brackets, the source identi

fying it. Where in the first five columns there is some doubt about the information given, it is placed in brackets. The list of abbreviations below refers to the last column only. To avoid any future confusion the letters have not been numbered here.

Alb, 572. 5 Lbm3 f.230r and 234r. 6 Müller. I Altmann. 8 Hermann Deiters, Briefe Beethovens an Ferdinand Ries, in: Vierteljahrsschrift fir Musikwissen schaft IV (1888), p. 83—98; A. C. Kalischer, Beethovens sämtliche Briefe, 5 vols.; Berlin and Leipzig, Schuster und Loeffler (1907-8); Leopold Schmidt, Beethoven-Briefe an Nicolaus Simrock, F. G. We geier, Eleonore von Breuning und Ferd. Ries, Berlin, Simrock (1909); Alb. 9 Müller quotes Ries's letter of 22 October as beginning ,Jhren Brief vom 18. erhielt ich 15. ds." 10 Beethoven replied indirectly to v. Breuning through his letter to Ries of (20) July 1804. Possibly v. Breuning wrote to Beethoven through Ries. " Ries sent a set of waltzes on letter paper, as promised in his letter of 10 August 1809; presumably a note was included. 12 Ries had written from Paris to people, whom Beethoven evidently disliked, about him and about his age. There are no known letters from Ries's time in Paris and it is not clear whether Beethoven was replying to a letter from Ries or merely following up an acrimonious discussion. 13 A fragment. 14 Sent via Mannerhierta in Stockholm. 15 Almost certainly written prior to Salomon's death on 28 November 1815. 16 This letter, dated April, has almost certainly been mis-dated in the past; so too with other letters quoted in the Notizen. The writer will take up this matter elsewhere. II This may have been addressed to the Philharmonic Society through Ries, or it may have been accompanied by a letter to the Society. 18 The autograph of the second part only of this letter is at BNu. " Ries wrote .November' which was corrected to December by Artaria. 20 Dated 1823 in error. The address face was corrected. 21 Ries may have written several letters pressing Beethoven for this reply. None of these letters can be identified, and none is listed here. 22 This formerly had the call number BH203, along with three other Ries letters dated 11 March 1823, 29 April 1829 and 17 October 1833. 23 Ries refers to the penultimate letter to Schultz; as the previous one listed is dated 25 April 1826, it is likely there were others. A March accompanied this and Schultz appears not to have acknowledged receipt (Lbm3, SS32) 24 Ries complained that Welsh had not answered any letters. 25 Dated 1826, but the post office stamp and the receiving clerk's note confirm 1827. 26

Concerning the letting of Ries's house in Godesberg, on which there seem to have been earlier letters. 27 Ries wrote April, which was corrected to October by Joseph Ries. 28

Accompanying this were letters from the King of Prussia, perhaps that of 1st August, 1827, and from General Witzleben, the latter for the attention of W. Watts, Secretary of the Philharmonic Socie ty, though it is not in the Society's archives. 29 A printed notice of payment with details added by hand. 30 Ries enclosed the next three letters of reference presumably for Fétis, who was about to visit Eng land. 31 Ries wrote 1830, which was corrected to 1829. 32 Dated 9th March 1830, but must be February. 33 Forwarded to Berlin by Ries's wife. 34 A copy endorsed by Hawes agreeing to terms for the completion of Ries's opera The Sorceress (Liska), op. 164. 5 This was delivered on 10 October 1831 after having been sent to America. It is described as the

first from Dublin; others cannot be identified. 36 Ries wrote August. The postmark gives the correct month. 37 Altmann's suggested date of December, following remarks in the letter, seems too late, since Ries had returned to Frankfurt by mid September. 38

During 1831 Ries sent a total of 940 Thalers to Franz Joseph, for whom things were going badly, There were certainly more letters between them that year than can be listed here. 39 Ries may have been responding to a note from Kistner announcing himself as Probst's successor.

40 Ries wrote on a printed note over the name of the Aachener Musikfestes Comité. 41 A letter of recommendation for Herr Griebel, addressed to twelve people in Aachen. 42 On f. 229v Joseph Ries gives 10 December as the date of his reply. 43 A letter of recommendation for Herr Griebel, addressed to six people in Holland. 44

Possibly separate letters to and from the Sparks. 45 There seem to have been letters immediately preceding this and Lennè's. 46 Ries probably left for Paris in late October. 47 Ries may have returned from Paris to London for a short period. 48 Ries wrote March. 49 There were three letters to which Wegeler had not replied. As he had written to Ries on 1 and 21 December, it is possible that Ries wrote three letters in quick succession from about 20 December. 50 A date around May 1827 is likely.
