Nawarlah and Dadbe students from Gunbalanya Community School travelled to Darwin on Thursday, October 27 to see a live performance of Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie.

The staff and students had to wake up very early to start the long journey into Darwin however all of the students were proud to represent Gunbalanya Community School and the community and did a deadly job. The students had a great time with Teiya Rourke saying “my favourite part was the snake at the show

because it was funny” and Dionica Cooper saying, “I liked feeding the animals. We fed the buffalo at Bark Hut”.

SAFE HOUSE THERAPY PROGRAM

GUnBaLanYa CoMMUnItY sChooL tRIP

Nawarlah and Dadbe students from Gunbalanya Community School in Darwin for a school excursion.

The craft of sewing will soon be available as a therapy-based activity for women who access the Gunbalanya Women’s Safe House.

This is a new activity to be delivered at the safe house and it is hoped that the program will give women the opportunity to gain new skills as they learn how to sew with recently acquired sewing machines and empower their personal being.

Women’s Safe House Coordinator Wendy Bourke said this is the first time the safe house has implemented such a program and there are hopes to develop further therapy opportunities for those who access the service.

The community is able to assist by donating fabric, cut offs or cotton which could be used to make toys or clothing.

The service is also always seeking donations of clothing, towels, shampoos and toys.

Wendy said she wished to thank those who have made much-needed donations to the community service.

The service receives regular donations of various items and most of the time it is not known where the items have come from.

“Sometimes I don’t know where or who they come from to pass on our

appreciation,” Wendy said.If you have anything to donate, please

drop it off at the West Arnhem Regional Council office in Gunbalanya or Jabiru.

Kakadu and West Arnhem Regional Council are asking community members to be crocwise and keep your family safe around all waterways, including Jabiru Lake.

Kakadu crocodile manager Garry Lindner said district rangers have removed six saltwater crocodiles so far this year from the lake, including a 3.68 metre male, captured within 24 hours of moving into the lake.

“Saltwater crocs can move into the lake undetected at any time and do. The majority of people, especially locals, do the right thing. But people’s safety in the park and the community is our number one priority and we all need a reminder to be crocwise – especially at this time of year when crocodiles are on the move,” Garry said.

“Being crocwise is not hard, it’s simple but potentially life-saving. For example, if your vehicle gets stuck on Cahills Crossing, call for help and avoid wading into the water. No matter how hot it is, don’t enter Jabiru Lake. We’ve had recent reports of kids swimming in the lake and an incident where a croc lunged at a dog,” he said.

“We regularly monitor the traps installed in the lake. But please don’t enter the water. The safest place for people to swim is at Jabiru pool or if you’re a visitor, at your hotel. Crocs will always see you before you see them. If out on a boat fishing stay vigilant – don’t clean fish near the water’s

edge or from your boat, don’t reach into the water for your fish, be careful when launching or retrieving boats. Crocs love hanging around boat ramps. Remember in any body of water in the NT – crocs are probably present. And that includes our lake. We’re working with council staff to make sure that warning signs are in place.”

Garry said we all have a duty of care to look after each other, our community and our visitors.

“Sadly, no matter how many warning signs we put up there are still people who apparently choose to ignore the dangers. We’re still seeing some people entering the water around Cahill’s Crossing despite recent media reports which is really disappointing. Cahill’s Crossing is an area known for its crocodiles. Simply being in or on the edge of water is asking for trouble,” he said.

“We also need the community’s eagle eyes to report crocs to us and keep a look out for tracks and slide marks – this way we can try and reduce the risk of large crocodiles being present in populated areas like near the lake.”

Senior traditional owner Jonathan Nadji said Bininj were deeply disturbed by recent incidents.

“We have sadly experienced deaths on our country before and it is always a tragedy. When you come to Kakadu please respect traditional owners, rangers and the NT

Police. Please take note of what NT Police and rangers say to you so you can keep yourselves and your family safe. Especially around this time of year with Christmas approaching and families gathering together,” Mr Nadji said.

“I want all families to stay safe on our country and in our community. When I go to someone else’s country I have respect for their country and customary law. I expect people to do the same when they visit my country. The last thing we want is for somebody else to be injured or killed by a crocodile, so please be aware of the risks they pose and keep your kids safe. Teach them to Be

Crocwise.”To report a croc simply

MANINGRIDA STUDENTS LEARN TO SWIMManingrida School

students have been working on their skills in the pool as part of a four-week swimming program run with NT Swimming.

The vital program is now in its fourth year in the community and Maningrida School Principal Miranda Watt said she can really see the improvements in the students’ swimming abilities and confidence in the water.

The program included all students from preschool to senior and is so important to the school and the community, that a second person was brought in with

swimming coach Mark Walker to assist with the lessons.

Miranda said the program also helped to boost school attendance and gave the senior girls a chance to assist in being mentors for the transition students.

“This is a new thing and has worked really well. It got them in the pool and has helped their confidence,” Miranda said.

“The program will definitely be run next year.”

A number of school staff also took the opportunity to gain the bronze medallion lifesaving qualification

To finish the program, the school held a swimming carnival on Friday, November 4 with great results on the day.

The kids swam the different styles and competed in relays.

Miranda thanked West Arnhem Regional Council for providing the Maningrida Pool.

CROCWISE ON CROKER ISLANDMamaruni School on Croker

Island had Ranger Clare visit the students on October 24 and 25 to discuss crocodiles and how the students can stay safe.

The whole school came together for two afternoon collaborative learning sessions.

The first was also attended by the local police who supported the message of how important it is to be crocwise.

The first session focused on

information about crocodiles and how to stay safe. The students also had the opportunity to have a look at crocodile skins and skulls and discuss what they knew about crocodiles.

The second day was used to consolidate student knowledge and students experienced hands on learning via art and craft activities of making colourful cardboard crocodiles and moulding their own crocodiles from playdough.

New industrial fans and lights have been installed at Minjilang Recreation Hall providing cooler and brighter facilities for the sport and rec programs. The much needed upgrade was made possible through Northern Territory Government's Regional and Remote Community Grants.

Sport and Rec Officers Justin, Matthew and Amelia welcome everyone to enjoy daily

activities at the rec hall. WARC Council Services

Manager Candice Siedler-Twine said, “The new lighting has certainly brightened up the hall and with temperatures rising up to 36 degree the sport and rec participants are certainly enjoying additional air circulation”.

NOURLANGIE SAFARI CAMP, EPISODE 21Nourlangie Safari Camp, here is 9SLK Is anybody listening? (My radio code) From the Diaries of Flemming Jensen 1968-1969

In the previous episode, Flemming has a hint of homesickness, but realises that there is still so much he wants to see and do.

Sunday, 9th March, 1969

At last something has happened. Allan came together with two others.

One among other things, would take some different biological samples in the billabong.

They had to fly back after a couple hours and that gave me time to write two letters, one for Alice who has a birthday next Monday and one for Mum and Dad.

They have probably been nervous for me but it has been involuntarily. They must have comforted themselves by saying that ‘no news is good news.’

Allan will be here for the week and then he will take me with him back to Darwin. Before that the camp will be closed for a few weeks until the dry season is approaching.

Later Allan is going to Alice Spring and he says I can go with him. It sounds almost too good to be true so I take one thing at a time.

It seems that the time in Darwin have been filled with problems for Allan and for that matter also for Pat.

Her daughter who today is fifteen years old is going to have a child and she is not seen with friendly eyes in civil Darwin, at least not in such circumstances.

Some people are easily offended over such things at home but I think it’s different here in Australia. At home some people become outraged but one can ignore.

Conversely there has been a lot for the expectant mothers to make it as easy as possible. I refer among other things to institutions which can provide day nursery, kindergarten and otherwise advise and help new mothers in many other different ways.

Here in Australia it seems that

girls like Pat’s daughter are to be left to themselves and hope for others well being. Our social state of Denmark is fortunately higher.

Allan also appeared to have had problems, among others with Pat. Today I discovered to my surprise and amazement that Allan and Pat are not married.

While Pat was here with me after Allan has left, I heard many things from her perspective. Now along with Allan I hear many of the same things from his hand and they seemed completely contradictory.

Allan seems to lack one he could talk too, one he could be familiar with his thoughts, opinions, concerns and fears. I was apparently this one. I cannot quite take pity on him because I do not know the truth about many of his seemingly big problems.

I hear however, with one ear and thinking as mine. Furthermore I also have my problems and I keep them to myself. Leaving next week is fine and I will get to Alice Springs so I’m really happy. As often

before, I’m so easy to please! Now you appear to be tired old boy. You go too far. End for today.

Monday, 10th March 1969

It has been a hectic day. Allan has taken over the cooking which after the arrival of new supplies has been a little more versatile.

We have struggled with the water pump and the engine running the generator so we can get light in the evenings. We succeeded. In the evening we really got the machine running so we could get lights.

Allan has fixed the carburettor several times and although he did not have very much understanding of mechanics, we were lucky.

I drove up and down the airstrip for over an hour to recharge the batteries. I seem to have blown a fuse when I tried to send a telegram.

I feel a little guilty of being the cause of this.

The circumstances demanded action and I did not know how to operate the radio. Pat should have told me how to use it. What if something had happened!

Now Allan and I only receive and he curses and swears but I think he has got used to it. Now he knows how I felt.

We have drunk the last beer and are now starting with sherry. There has not been much time to care for the dogs in the last few days but one of these days we have to get a buff.

I have a feeling that Allan’s conversation about Alice Springs will not turn into anything, but now we will see.

Allan has some big words in his mouth and he can talk like hell. In any way a flight seems to arrive over the weekend.

If the weather permits! I hope the best. If Allan’s partner will be with the plane only time will show. At least I will be ready.

Tuesday 11 March 1969

Allan brought the films from Indonesia and Nourlangie back from Darwin where they had been developed. They were good as all my other pictures and I enjoyed them. I will probably send the negatives home along with my first diary when I come to Darwin.

It turned out happily that the radio was not destroyed. There was simply some rust here and there and when it was removed everything was OK.

Allan immediately sent a telegram in which he asked his partner Ted to replace him, when he and hopefully with me on Saturday or Sunday expect to leave Nourlangie.

Through the day we messed with respectively the lawnmower and water pump but none of them work yet.

The reason that the dogs looked healthy and well nourished when Allan came out was simply that I had given them double what they usually get. Their rations are now cut by half. I do not protest as they are Allan’s dogs and I will soon leave.

Again today I swam down in the lagoon. It’s better than standing under a simple shower. However, I keep an eye out for crocodiles and snakes.

Most of the evening, Allan told stories from the time here at Nourlangie. A lot has happened over the years and he is a good storyteller I must say. It’s been a couple hours of hunting stories, both on women, buffaloes and crocodiles. I have a peculiar life here on Nourlangie.

Unfortunately I think that I will only be rich in memories.

In the next episode, with the return of Allan, Flemming starts thinking about his next move.

MANINGRIDA NEW ARRIVALS

STUDENTS HEAD OUTDOORS

By Taznie Mitchell

The Year 7/8’s from Jabiru Area School went on a school camp to the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre. The students departed on October 25 and returned after two nights away from home.

The school sets aside some funding each year for middle school and seniors to go on camps so students can have learning experiences outside of school.

Activities that the classes participated in included high ropes, rock climbing, bike riding, archery and an awesome morning swim at Buley Rockhole in Litchfield National Park.

Among the adults who came on camp were Shaun Wilson and Justin Cooper who have recently graduated from JAS.

It looked like all the adults had as much fun as the students.

The Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre has wonderful new facilities including a massive kitchen and hall space which we used to watch movies and play games in throughout the day and night. They also had two massive trampolines which some students said were the best thing there. The staff at the camp were friendly and showed everyone heaps of cool things.

Overall it was an amazing experience. Everyone got along and we got to know each other a bit more.

It was great to spend quality time with people we don’t usually hang around with including the teachers!

Jabiru Area School students getting ready for the high ropes as part of their camp to the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre.

Maningrida new arrival Dustin Black with happy parents Gloria Dhamarrandji and Gustin Black.

By Andy RalphSome 40 boats spread far and wide throughout Kakadu for the

annual Alligator Fishing Club Challenge on October 28 and 29.Now in its 11th year, the all species competition sees many teams

race down the South Alligator River chasing blue water species; then next day hitting the billabongs for hungry saratoga or upper East Alligator River for a big barra.

With most teams overnighting in their boats near Mud Island or up Brooks Creek at the mouth of the South Alligator, anglers battled rough conditions, electrical storms and never-ending assault from sandflies to score some golden snapper in the mid 70cms with junior angler Matt Bolitho winning the outright jew prize with a 122cm fish after zipping across to the mouth of East Alligator River.

But the catch of the day went to local female angler Lou Webster after bottom fishing without luck and with a winning barra in mind, her skipper Brett Warhurst ventured a few kilometres upstream to the mouth of Brooks Creek to throw a few lures around.

With the boys having the first flick, they quickly wound in two fish in the mid 80’s, then Lou’s first cast saw her Reidy’s Judge lure smashed by a 98cm barra – taking out the major prize in the competition.

Overall 248 fish were registered and although fish size was down on previous comps, organisers were happy that good numbers were not only caught in the big rivers, but also in the billabongs where it’s been slim pickings since the big rain event in mid-September.

The two day competition ended at the Jabiru Sports & Social Club with a family fun afternoon with junior casting competition, water slides, face painting and the annual NAH helicopter lolly-drop on the JSSC bowling green. Alligator Fishing Club members are reminded that the AGM will be held at the JSSC on Saturday, December 3.

SPORTMANINGRIDA BUST UP COMPETITION

This year’s Maningrida Bust Up ‘Lies, Lures and Legends’ fishing competition will be held November 12 and 13 with a total of 19 boats entered in this year’s event.

Organisers are looking forward to some healthy competition with 74 competitors from Maningrida gearing up for the weekend.

MERGs is an important volunteer group based in Maningrida which provides emergency services and assistance to Maningrida and surrounding communities.

This includes cyclone preparation and clean up, road crash rescues, attending to missing/stranded vessels, firefighting and overdue parties.

The money raised from the Maningrida Bust Up allows MERGS to purchase new equipment to conduct these operations.

By The Sleeper and CoRound 3 saw the Jabiru

Bombers continuing their unbeaten start to the season, giving University Rats a valuable football lesson at Asbuild Stadium Palmerston.

The Bombers dominated the hosts from the opening bounce and showed no mercy until the final siren beating Rats 34.17.221 to 0 (nil).

Bombers made a blistering start to the game. First five minutes saw veteran bomber Rodney (Pocket Rocket) Moore kicking the first two majors of the game, both within a couple of minutes.

Star recruit Jarrod (Bulldog) Dawson-Smith also slotted his first goal for the red black. Bombers had a lot of shots on goal for the opener but were inaccurate but still took a healthy 44 point lead going into the first break.

Bombers continued the dominance in the second term with standalone ruckman Michael “The Dominator” Gurruwiwi back in for his first game being the driving

force behind it all. Jabiru’s on ball brigade were winning a truckload of clearances. Billy (The Kid) Bayne took advantage of this kicking his first career goal. Travis (Wrecking Ball) Bradley was putting his body on the line, getting underneath the opposition skin for his toughness. Billy “Love a Goal” Nalorlman decided on a solo performance and banged four goals for the term. Slick ball movement and ball winning ability resulted in Jabiru

kicking 10.3 for the term. Bombers went in to the main

break 16.11 to nil.The third quarter A.K.A the

premiership quarter was no different from the first two.

Bombers came out hungry and continued to get first use of the ball. Jabiru improved

on their goal kicking with Daniel (Uluru) Hill kicking a mammoth goal, his second major for the game. Bombers outside players Cain “Dare Devil” Nangamu and Craig “Speedy Gonzales” Bangarr were only getting stronger as the game progressed. The speed and skill of the Jabiru Bombers started to take its toll on University, as they were running out of puff, Jabiru went on to kick 6.4 for the quarter.

Final term was party time for Jabiru, as they piled on an extra twelve goals, University had all but given up, Basil “Goal Sneak” Nalorlman kicked three goals for the term, and Kingston “Jesaulenko” Naborlhborlh took a spectacular mark in the forward which brought the vocal crowd to their feet.

Rumour has it, that he almost touched one of the airlines flying past.

Prized recruit Lendel “Beagle Bay Bomber” Victor relished his first time in the Jabiru Red N Black and joined in on the fun putting through his first goal for his new club the

Jabiru Bombers.University were relieved

when they heard the final siren as they were embarrassed by a hungry Jabiru bombers outfit. The win was a much needed percentage boost.

CROCS WIN FOOTY COMP

The Crocs were the overall winners of the 2016 Jabiru Mixed Touch Football Competition. Photo courtesy Jodii Waterbury.

The Jabiru Mixed Touch Football Comp wrapped up this week with the grand final between Crocs and Front Rowers.

The game was fast and the score was close; never more than two tries the difference.

Half time scores were close at 5/4 Crocs way and both teams were exhausted.

When the full time siren

went, Crocs had the game by a try. Nice work Crocs.

Thank you to the eight teams who joined in the competition.

Special thanks to Adrian for refing week in and week out, thanks also to West Arnhem Regional Council for the use of the oval and lights… and thank you finally to Blueridge for a little extra lighting.
