Welcomethe 5th congress of European microbiologists (FEmS) will be held in the exciting city of Leipzig from July 21-25, 2013. FEmS brings together 46 member societies from 36 European countries, including over thirty thousand microbiologists. this important microbiology congress will provide a stimulating forum for thousands of European and other international colleagues to appreciate the current state of the art in microbiology during numerous symposia and workshops led by prominent scientists in their field. the meeting will be a chance to discuss solutions to future challenges and to provide topical coverage of key disciplines. Special attention will also be given to young scientists by providing an important number of grants allowing them to attend the congress.
Examples of key areas will be:• Biodiversity• Bioremediation• Biofilms in ecology and medicine• clinical microbiology and pathogenesis• Eukaryotic microbes• Food microbiology• microbial stress responses• molecular microbiology and genomics• Veterinary microbiology• Virology
i look forward to welcoming you to this exciting congress.

About FEMSFEmS is a Federation of European microbiological Societies, with its main mission to advance and unify microbiology knowledge. FEmS brings together 46 member societies from 36 European countries, covering over thirty thousand microbiologists. members can apply for research fellowships, visiting scientist grants, young scientist meeting grants and/or support when organizing a meeting. these benefits are restricted to members only. FEmS facilitates exchange of scientific knowledge to all microbiologists in Europe and worldwide by publishing five microbiology journals. For further information please visit: www.fems-microbiology.org
Support for Young Scientists the support of young scientists is one of the main activities of FEmS. We would like to encourage FEmS awardees to present their research. A number of travel scholarships will be available. terms and conditions and an application form are available from the congress website.

Call for AbstractsDeadline for submission of abstracts: FEBRUARY 11, 2013
Abstracts should be submitted via the congress website: www.kenes.com/fems-microbiology Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and have the format:• Background• objectives• methods• conclusions• References (if needed)there are three different types of abstract submission as follows:
1. Workshopsover the course of the congress there will be 20 workshops. Each workshop will consist of presentations by the two chairpersons and four presentations selected from submitted abstracts.
2. Special Poster Discussion GroupsSpecial Poster Discussion Groups will be scheduled on selected highly topical issues. these sessions will offer young scientists a unique opportunity to present and discuss interim results of high importance.
3. Poster Presentationsthroughout the congress there will be poster sessions scheduled covering all areas of microbiology addressed by this congress. Submissions marked Workshops or Special Poster Discussion Groups not accepted for either of these types will be considered for poster presentation. Authors will be notified regarding abstract acceptance. Accepted abstracts will be published on a USB memory Stick and distributed to participants onsite.
