She has enjoyed many courses on Shakespeare’s writing and is an enthusiastic fan. She would like you to share in her experiences. Social norms have changed in the 400 years since the Bard wrote his timeless works, but his insight into the human condition is just as relevant today as it was then. We will delight in his genius by reading examples of his sonnets, soliloquies, and scenes from the plays and consider them in light of the historical context and social mores of 1600 as contrasted with today’s times. He wrote his plays to entertain, so let the show begin!

ULYSSES FOR THE FIRST-TIME READER Second Friday 10:00 AM-11:30 AM – Margate Library

First class October 13 Bob DelBene became fascinated with Ulysses after being briefly exposed to it while doing graduate work at Glassboro State College, over 40 years ago. The book has remained his favorite read since that time, and he has never stopped studying it and building his library of critical materials about James Joyce. In recent years Bob has taught four courses on Ulysses locally and conducts an annual Bloomsday event in Ocean City.

The 20th century's most influential work of fiction will be introduced in an easily digestible manner, free of literary pretense. Lectures, video clips, PowerPoint images and round-table discussions will unlock the richness and humor inherent in James Joyce's tale about the June 16, 1904 odyssey of the lovable Mr. Leopold Bloom.

The Gabler edition of the book will be required to keep class members in sync through lectures and discussions.

The first class will examine Harry Kemelman’s Friday the Rabbi Slept Late and/or Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry. They are available from the library or on Amazon. A list of additional readings will be given at the first class. The course will explore the mystery genre featuring Jewish detectives, many of whom are struggling with their own mysteries relating to their Jewish identity.
