A “Christian Care Company” VILLAGER FELLOWSHIP SQUARE TUCSON MAY 2013 SUMMERTIME SURVIVAL 101 Well, it’s official, summer has arrived in Tucson and the outlook is hot and dry. It is important to practice Summer Safety and protect yourself not just from sunburns, but from dehydration. With our higher temperatures HYDRATION is key to enjoying a fun, active lifestyle during the summer months. During warm weather, it is recommended that we drink EIGHT 8-oz glasses of water daily. Fluids are vital to our body’s functions as they aid in metabolism, regulate body temperature, prevent constipation and hydrate cells in the body to function optimally. When the body is NOT properly hydrated, our organs have to work harder. The body then tries to create fluids by breaking down muscle tissue which is not ideal for maintaining overall good health. So…BOTTOMS UP! Carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go, including bus trips to shopping and medical appointments. Enjoy fruit and keep popsicles on hand as a cool and tasty way to get more fluids. To make the most of our summer months, avoid “Peak Heat” hours when exercising outside—remember to walk during the early mornings or later in the evenings. Some people think about sun protection only when they spend a day at the beach or pool. But sun exposure adds up day after day, every time you are in the sun. So Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap to protect your- self from UV rays: Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat and Wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitive skin around them. These steps provide the best sun protection when used together. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using products with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30. The SPF number represents the level of protection against UVB rays the sunscreen provides. There’s a lot going on at Fellowships Square this summer, both indoors and out, so keep your body hydrated, practice sun safety and enjoy a healthy and fun summer!
