Introduction

“Think globally. Act locally.”

This was a main tenet emphasized by Isabella Cannon, the Center for Leadership’s matriarch. And although Isabella is no longer with us, I believe she would be proud of the current Leadership Fellows and their faithfulness to this phrase.

In order to think globally, one must understand what it means to be connected on a global level. The Center for Leadership established a study abroad internship program in Vilnius, Lithuania, this year led by Dean Rex Waters. The program worked with the International Human Rights Law Summer Study and provided leadership coaching and evaluations for the institute’s participant. Additionally, 20 Leadership Fellows studied abroad during the 2010-11 academic year, traveling to places such as Italy, Ghana, Australia, Costa Rica, and China.

Not only did the Leadership Fellows expand their horizons by thinking globally, the students also acted locally. The first-year Leadership Fellows provided leadership consulting with students from six middle schools within Alamance County as part of the Alamance Youth Leadership Academy. Several senior Fellows incorporated “acting locally” into their legacy projects, such as Lauren Flood’s focus on North Carolina veterans and volunteering with the Raleigh USO or Carrie Ray creating an ESL class for local Hispanic/Latino residents.

The pages that follow will showcase some of the accomplishments of the Leadership Fellows this year. But even this list does not truly illuminate the full value of what each Fellow has accomplished nor the genuine legacy of Isabella Cannon.

As we prepare for the start of another year, I wish to acknowledge some of those who helped to engage with the Fellows and enrich their Elon experience. The professors teaching the Fellows courses this year are professors Jim Brown, Chris Leupold, Rod Clare, Nancy Midgette, and Martin Fowler. I would also be remiss not to thank those in the Center for Leadership that continue to support the Fellows effort: Felicia Massey and Michelle Kusel. And finally, a special recognition needs to go to Rex Waters for his unending leadership and support of the Fellows program.

Civic engagement and serviceLeadership Fellows take action on topics about which they are passionate. First-year Fellow Savannah Chaisson volunteered with Allied Churches, a soup kitchen in Burlington. Senior Anna Hulett helped with Elon Elementary School in the autistic classroom. Additionally, sophomore Will Brummett served as the service learning leader of the service living/learning community.

84% of Fellows were involved in at least one civic engagement and service initiative.

Study abroadIsabella Cannon strongly believed in students encountering the world outside of the United States. The Leadership Fellows were awarded a travel grant with Dr. Cannon’s vision in mind. While abroad, students created a blog recording their cultural and leadership experiences. Junior Grant DeRoo traveled through Europe to learn about the Holocaust. Junior Brielle Giordano spent the Fall semester in China, taking some time to journey across “The Land of Dragons and Emperors” and the Silk Road.

InternshipsLeadership Fellows recognize the importance of having an internship experience while in college whether it is in the local, national, and international community. Junior Samantha Baranowski interned with CNBC Europe while studying abroad in London. Sophomore Brenna Humphries had a summer internship with Google in California. Additionally, first-year Fellow Wesley Ann Barden, sophomore Jess Gavic, and senior Alison Parker interned at the US Capitol with their local representatives (Congressman Joe Mica, Senator Ron Johnson, and Senator Kay Hagen, respectively).

Undergraduate research

10% of Fellows have been involved in undergraduate research.

Achievements and HonorsFellows received substantial recognition for their academic and organizational accomplishments. Sophomore Sarah Kowalkowski was named a Lumen Scholar and will be conducting research on law school curricula and its connections with authentic leadership development. Meanwhile, senior Stacey Markham was awarded the John W. Barney Memorial Award and the William Moseley Brown Leadership Award for her work with New Student Orientation and several other organizations. Leadership Fellows have also excelled in the classroom, with three Fellows (Anna Hulett, Stacey Markham, and Alison Parker ) being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the campus’ highest academic honor society.

John Yi will be entering Teach for America.

Carolyn Murphy will be starting law school at the Univ. of Mississippi.

Craig Massey will be getting married and starting his business career with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Charlotte, NC.

Lauren Flood joined IBM in their Leadership Development Programs group after serving as an intern her junior year.

Carrie Ray volunteered in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, with youth and youth development for four months post-graduation in December.

Stacey Markham is now in working in Knoxville, TN, as a family intervention specialist.
