The optional Driving Assistance package offers the driver a comprehensive scope of support, with Active Steering Assist including Active Lane Change Assist1 and Active Brake Assist. Route-based speed adaptation1 adjusts the vehicle’s speed ahead of bends, roundabouts, junctions, toll booths and turning-off manoeuvres when Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is active. Mercedes-Benz is the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to have developed an integral safety concept, with the aim of safe driving, responding in an appropriate manner to hazards, avoiding accidents and mitigating the consequences of accidents. For the occupants of a Mercedes and for all other road users, too.

Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive forms part of this integral safety concept. It makes your Mercedes one of the most intelligent automobiles in the world – an “intelligent partner”. The Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive assistance systems are able to recognise hazards, provide timely warnings and even intervene autonomously when necessary – by performing braking manoeuvres, for example. In this way, accidents can be prevented or the severity of accidents can be significantly reduced. In order to protect passengers as necessary in case of dangers, additional protective features such as PRE-SAFE® are activated as anticipatory measures. These features vary according to the model concerned.

Many Mercedes-Benz vehicles already offer the option of a Driving Assistance package. The key functions of this package include partially automated driving on motorways, on country roads and in built-up areas. The Driving Assistance package also lends support when changing lane on multi-lane roads, for example during overtaking. This relieves the driverʼs workload, as in normal driving they no longer need to brake or accelerate. The driver also receives substantial support with steering – even in bends.

Never before have safety, comfort and measures to reduce the strain on the driver been combined so effectively. This intelligent and pioneering interplay of sensors and safety and assistance systems represents a milestone on the road to autonomous and accident-free driving. And a fascinating new experience into the bargain.

Only an S-Class looks this far ahead.Optional MULTIBEAM LED enables extremely fast and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the given traffic situation. The light can always be switched on precisely where it is required via 84 individually controllable LEDs. A total of four control units calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second using information from a camera behind the windscreen.

If no other road user is detected, the road is straight and the vehicle speed is over 40 km/h, the additional ULTRA RANGE Highbeam goes on automatically. The maximum legally permitted light intensity is produced, which means that the brightness of the main beam falls short of the reference value of one lux only at a distance of more than 650 metres. When the system detects motorway condi-tions, an optimised high beam pattern is selected accord-ingly. Motorway high beam reduces the risk of dazzling oncoming trucks and focuses the driver’s attention on their own lane. In combination with COMAND Online, the cornering light with roundabout function already activates the cornering light function prior to entering a roundabout.

MORE LIGHT, BETTER VISIBILITY

The standard-specification LED High Performance headlamps provide for enhanced safety at night and a distinctive, striking look. LED technology illuminates the road ahead better than conventional headlamps – and it consumes less energy.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus as a feature of MULTIBEAM LED allows main beam to be left on at all times without dazzling other road users. As a result the best possible headlamp range is always available to the driver. The function is active from a speed of 30 km/h on unlit roads.

More than a nice gesture: When locking and unlocking the vehicle, the locator lighting greets and takes its leave of the driver with an exceptional light display featuring changing colours.

The rear end design boldly demonstrates the power and dynamism that the new S-Class embodies. New crystal- look rear lamps have the appearance of jewels, while three horizontally running fibre optic elements serve as a defining design feature. So-called multi-level functionality for the brake light additionally optimises driving safety for road users following the vehicle as well.

The rear lamps show a characteristic design by day and night. The advantages of their LED technology include better visibility, a considerably longer operating life and lower power consumption than conventional bulbs. The light inten-sity of the turn signal indicators and brake lights varies according to the prevailing light conditions and the vehicle’s speed.

Top performance figures from 5.1 l/100 km to 1000 Nm.The comprehensive S-Class portfolio spans the full spectrum of present-day high-end engine construction. Six, eight or twelve cylinders. Petrol or diesel. Such variety is unmatched in the luxury segment.

A new highlight is the electrified 6-cylinder in-line petrol engine in two output ratings. An integrated starter alter-nator between engine and transmission (EQ Boost) enables virtually silent engine starting. The combustion engine is also switched off during coasting in the ECO drive program. Additional torque and a boost function for lively response provide for additionally enhanced driving dynamics.

An even more fuel-efficient new development is the 6-cylinder in-line diesel drive delivering up to 700 Nm of torque. A cutting-edge nitrogen oxide aftertreatment system cleans the exhaust gases more effectively than ever.

The new top-of-the-range V8 engine is derived directly from the high-performance unit on board the Mercedes-AMG GT. With this engine, the S-Class offers performance on a par with that of a super sports car. This pairs up with hallmark S-Class smooth running to produce a unique and fascinat-ing combination. An integrated cylinder shutoff system additionally provides for astounding fuel efficiency: in the low rev range, four of the eight cylinders are imperceptibly shut off.

The V12 has always represented the pinnacle of engine construction. This earns it a place of honour in the new S-Class – as a specially equipped S 600 and as the Mercedes-Maybach S 650. Find out more on pages 54 and 76 to 83.

Curbing lateral forces with innovative features.The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with curve inclination function – standard for the S 600 and Mercedes-Maybach S 650, optionally available for the S 560 and the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 – prepares for bumps ahead before the vehicle passes over them. To do this, MAGIC BODY CONTROL combines active suspension with continuously adjustable dampers and ROAD SURFACE SCAN. The latter feature employs a stereo camera to adapt the damping in good time to the carriageway ahead and to increase or reduce the load on the wheels via the active hydraulics. The curve incli-nation function enables the body of the vehicle to lean inwards by up to 2.65 degrees on bends. This significantly reduces the perceived lateral forces while increasing subjective driving pleasure, especially on country roads. The continuously adjustable dampers allow both a comfortable basic damping action and a stiffer, speed- dependent setup. Depending on the driving program, it is also possible to select comfortable or taut and sporty

STANDARD-FIT SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

In combination with infinitely variable damper control, the AIRMATIC air suspension system ensures a very high standard of both ride comfort and handling. The damping at each wheel is adapted to the current driving situation, and can be set for more comfortable or sporty characteristics as required.

The Direct-Steer system supplements the comfort of speed- sensitive power steering system with a variable ratio dependent on the steering wheel angle. On winding roads, for example, this produces a more agile handling response and improved straight-line stability.

At a push of the DYNAMIC SELECT button, drivers can choose between comfortable, sporty and efficient driving characteristics, or individually defined characteristics. Parameters such as engine, transmission, steering or ESP® characteristics are adjusted according to the selected drive program.

The active suspension effectively compensates body roll and pitching when moving off, in bends or during braking, while hydraulic self-levelling all-round allows the level of the vehicle to be controlled independently of the load on board. The vehicle can be raised by 40 mm for increased ground clearance. At high speeds, the suspension level is automatically lowered by up to 15 mm, thereby helping to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve driving stability.

Follow a guiding hand for once: COMAND Online.Navigation, telephone, audio, video, internet – with the COMAND Online control and display system the driver is able to keep tabs on these and many other functions. Information is shown in colour on a 31.2 cm high-resolution media display. Fast hard-disc navigation with realistic topographical map display for relaxed route guidance. In combination with a suitable mobile phone it is possible to call up internet pages when the vehicle is stationary and to use Mercedes-Benz apps such as POI search, weather or internet radio while driving. Other highlights of COMAND Online include the Bluetooth® interface with hands-free function and telephony via wideband speech, a read/write function for text messages and emails and music trans-mission via audio-streaming.

In addition to the COMAND Controller and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system, the COMAND Online functions can be controlled intuitively with the innovative touch-pad by means of single- or multi-finger (multitouch) gestures.

A Head-up Display can optionally project the most impor-tant information for the driver into the latter’s field of vision, where it appears to hover over the bonnet around two metres in front of the steering wheel.

With optional Remote Parking Assist1 (see illustration below) you can get out of the vehicle and guide it into parking spaces by smartphone. It is operated by an app. The vehicle can manoeuvred out of a narrow parking space or garage in the same convenient way.

The Connectivity Comfort package provides the technical basis for use of the location, tracking and remote services for three years. Geofencing, Vehicle Tracker, Remote Door Locking and Unlocking, Remote Retrieval of Vehicle Status or Programming of Auxiliary Heating – a selection of the Remote Online services that can currently be booked separately with Daimler AG on the basis of this technical set-up.

The Mercedes me connect Concierge Service2 is an exclusive assistance and information service for Mercedes-Benz customers. It provides personal support by telephone when searching for interesting locations (POI), restaurants or hotels. Recommended destinations are transferred to COMAND Online upon request. The Concierge Service can be used in the vehicle and via an app on smartphones.

Futuristic displays in HD resolution, select materials, a spacious feel – the optional ambient lighting with 64 colours showcases this exceptional atmosphere in the new S-Class during night-time driving, too. For example, the indirect LED light complements the elegant lines of the trim and goes one step further: the light showcases the interior like a work of art by composing different colours to form colour schemes. This creates emotionally appealing contrasts and structures the interior in three levels. The colour scheme can be briefly replaced by special effects – for instance a Coming Home function welcomes the driver. In this way, the ambient lighting uses the positive influences of light on well-being during the journey. As such, this feature represents a key element of the ENERGIZING comfort control option.

THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT: AMBIENT FRAGRANCING

The interior can be fragranced to suit individual tastes with the optional AIR BALANCE package. There is a choice of six high-quality interior fragrances according to personal preferences. In addition, the air quality can be improved by ionisation and optimised filtering of the incoming and recirculating air. The two interior air filters have an anti-allergenic function. The especially allergy- friendly product comes with an ECARF seal of quality.

Listen up: Burmester® high-end sound.28 amplifier channels with a total system output of 1590 watts and technologies developed exclusively for the vehicle optionally provide for unprecedented listening enjoyment. With the 3D surround sound system, passengers are able to experience and enjoy a 3D reproduction of mono, stereo and 5.1 music signals in the vehicle. This is achieved with the aid of special algorithms and three speakers integrated in the roof lining. The VIP setting makes it possible to adjust the sound individually for the driver, front passenger and passengers on the left and right in the rear. To suit personal tastes, individual sound settings can be carried out with the five sound presets “Pure”, “Easy Listening”, “Live”, “Surround” and “3D Surround”.

The ENERGIZING massage function enhances the sense of well-being – if desired also using heat.
