Age rating for music videos to takeeffect from 6 April 2014 The British Board of Film Classification is to pilot voluntary ratings

for online music videos, as the exemption threshold for music DVDs isnarrowed

This follows a review of the Video Recordings Act by the UKgovernment, which was completed last year. Until now, onlyphysically released music videos containing extreme contenthave required an age rating. Under the pending changes to theAct, expected to be implemented in the spring, anything that fitsthe criteria for a twelve certificate or above will have to beclassified by BBFC examiners. Previously these would havebeen stamped exempt, or simply not put forward for review atall.

Government has also asked the BBFC and the BPI to launch a pilotscheme to rate online music videos. At the moment online contentdoes not come under the BBFCs remit, and so anything sent to it forclassification is done so voluntarily (which some labels do in somecases).

Music publishing While music publishing lacks the glamor and sex appeal of recorded

music, in recent years it has taken on greater importance for labelsand artists as an income source as CD and download sales havewaned.

the music industrys goal is to move to an entirely free market systemwhere individual publishers can negotiate licensing deals withcompanies directly. It already does this with specific companiessuch as Apple for iTunes Radio , but the industry ideal would be tomove to this model for all licensing deals - would increase to $4.52billion in the U.S. in a free market system.

The fear, however, is that such a move wouldnt create a fair marketat all but a wholly unfair one tilted in favor of the three major musicpublishing companies, which also happen to be the three majorrecord labels: Universal Music, Sony Music, and Warner Music. OLIGOPOLY (Marxism)

Theory Genre Theory Daniel Chandler : Conventional definitions of

genres tend to be based on the notion that they constituteparticular conventions of content (such as themes or settings)and/or form (including structure and style) which are shared bythe texts which are regarded as belonging to them .

It is easy to underplay the differences within a genre. SteveNeale declares that 'genres are instances of repetition anddifference' (Neale 1980, 48) . He adds that 'difference isabsolutely essential to the economy of genre': mere repetitionwould not attract an audience. Texts often exhibit theconventions of more than one genre. John Hartley notes that

'the same text can belong to different genres in differentcountries or times' (O'Sullivan et al. 1994). contemporary theory emphasizes that both their forms and

functions are dynamic . David Buckingham argues that 'genreis not... simply given by the culture: rather, it is in a constantprocess of negotiation and change' (Buckingham 1993).

Audience Steve Neale argues that pleasure is derived from

'repetition and difference' (Neale 1980); there would be nopleasure without difference.

We may derive pleasure from observing how theconventions of the genre are manipulated (Abercrombie1996). We may also enjoy the stretching of a genre in newdirections and the consequent shifting of ourexpectations.

Uses and gratifications Uses and gratifications research has identified many

potential pleasures of genre, including the following: One pleasure may simply be the recognition of the

features of a particular genre because of our familiaritywith it. Recognition of what is likely to be important (andwhat is not), derived from our knowledge of the genre, isnecessary in order to follow a plot.

Genres may offer various emotional pleasures such asempathy and escapism
