It has been pledge for Mehran University of Engineering & Technology that it al-
ways encourages and motivates the students to participate in various competitions,
events and healthy activities for their studies all around the country
Following the distinctive continuity, MUET this time again acknowledged the team of 26
students from its various departments to participate in a 3 day international event organized
by IEEE GIKI chapter named Pakistan student congress’12 (PSC’12) held from 7th to 9th
September 2012.

Pakistan Student Congress (PSC) is an all Pakistan 3 day event that takes
place every year in any of the recognized IEEE Student Chapters around
the country. This time, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering &
Technology, Topi, Swabi got the opportunity to host this event.
In this 3 day international conference, multiple sessions were organized
to facilitate a creative environment for promotion of collaboration and
knowledge transfer including project exhibition, theme talks, program-
ming contest, poster competition, race to innovation and several other
sessions. Students from all over the world were invited to bring & share
their ideas and experiences through practical approach and physical ap-
pearance of their research work and projects.
Pakistan Student Congress 2012 (PSC’12) consisted of 6 major parts;
Social innovation contest, Humanitarian Contest, Engineering Project
exhibition, Theme Talk, WIE Pakistan Congressand All Branch Chairs
meetings. Every of these were held in parallel at Faculty of Electronic
Engineering and Auditorium. This mega event was the result of com-
bined efforts of IEEE GIKI Chapter and IEEE Lahore Section.
The first day startedwith the sessions named“Pakistan WIE Fo-
rum”and“Theme Talk”, Race to innovation- session 1 following the
opening ceremony, and ended with “Social networking event” following
other parallel sessions as well.Pakistan WIE forum provided a platform
to women to play their worthy part in the field of engineering (as WIE is
an acronym for Women In Engineering), and share their performance
which they have been showing in the respective engineering institutes.
Theme talk was talking about the major problem of Pakistan nowadays
i.e. “Energy Crisis in Pakistan”. Two teams participated in this event;
both from MUET.
First event of the second day was “Engineering Projects Exhibition”, in
which students had to brief to the attendees about their projects which
they have been working on. Most of the projects were presented by final
year students of various institutions. After Project Exhibition contest, it
was time to talk about entrepreneurship; a session of 1.5 hours was orga-
nized on “Entrepreneurship Talk”. This consisted of motivational talks
about business venture and fundamentals of business, which can be initi-
ated in the field of engineering sciences and can promote job opportuni-
ties in business community for graduates. All IEEE Branch Chairs meet-
ings were also running in three parallel venues on this day. It was“Social
Innovation contest” following the above events of second day. Social
Innovation contest was to bring innovative ideas that could facilitate the
society and can bring positive change for the betterment of common men.
Other events like “Scholarships on Higher Studies”and a seminar on
“Renewable energy resources” were also running in parallel. Last event
of the day was “Humanitarian Contest”.

New Etching Method to Produce 3-D Microstruc-tures in Sili-con for Pro-cessing of Light Sig-nals in Tele-communications
In modern tele-communications, light carries digi-tal information over kilometers within seconds. Adapted optical materials control the light signals. In the journal Advanced Func-tional Materials, researchers from Berlin, Lou-vain, and from Karlsruhe Insti-tute of Technolo-gy present a method to pro-duce photonic crystals. Their optical proper-ties are adjusted by structures of micrometer size. The method is rapid, cheap, and simple and partly uses the self-organization principle.

Workshop on Antenna Design and Fabrication
The importance of Antenna Design and Fabrication was long felt as this
world shifted to wireless communication systems. Hence, realizing the
importance of Antenna Designing Processes, the students of department of
Telecom Engineering organized a workshop with a motive to create an
interest & to encourage the students to built a research group which can
work in this field of Engineering which is of prime importance.
This event was organized under the banner of MUET, IEEE COMSOC
and IEEE WIE to provide students with the maximum knowledge and a
practical approach towards designing and fabrication of patch antenna,
which has be-
come one of the
major reasons
that this world
has now be-
come a “global
village”.
The research
experience of
students in the
field of patch
antenna led
them towards
the development
of idea to share
it with others.
Sharing the
benefits of an-
tenna design,
they opted for
physical fabri-
cation to make
it clearer, the
easiness in fab-
rication of an-
tenna.
This workshop lasted two days, first of which was for conception and de-
signing of patch antenna on software and second was for its physical fabri-
cation. Participants were promoted to work on those ideas and hence learn
new techniques to construct their custom designed antennas and above all,
produce research papers from their innovative ideas.
NASA's Swift Satellite Dis-covers a New Black Hole in Milky Way Galaxy
NASA's Swift satellite recently detected a rising tide of high-energy X-rays from a source toward the cen-ter of our Milky Way galaxy. The outburst, pro-duced by a rare X-ray nova, an-nounced the presence of a previously un-known stellar-mass black hole.

LIFE OF WOMEN IN PAKISTAN
Humans are the only civilized species yet known. And the human
tree, in general, has two parallel branches which have had their
own distinct roles in the evolutionary process. Females got the role
of reproducing and nurturing babies, while males were assigned
the task of hunting, gathering food and protecting. Hence, females
have so far represented tenderness only and males have been a
sign of vigor and dominance.
With the passage of time and the advent of industrialization and
technology, the evolutionary roles of the male (i.e providing
food, protecting, etc.) was substituted with state welfare or by the
woman since she too started working shoulder-to-shoulder with
others; this caused the female's economic dependency on man to
diminish. Today, in most of the developed world, women have
gained as much rights as men and are considered an indispensable
constituent of workforce.
Alas! This development, civilization and the shift in evolutionary
roles has not yet reached Pakistan. Women are still considered
subordinate and are yet treated like commodities. Working women
are severely persecuted; they have to face gender discrimination,
sexual harassment and innumerable other mistreatments.
Illiteracy, Early marriages, domestic violence, weak (almost no)
societal support are the other adversities that they deal with, here,
in Pakistan. Even the state does not provide any consolation or
comfort for the women. Laws like Hudood Ordinance, whereby
female has to provide four male eyewitnesses if she sues some-
body for rape, confirm this fact.
Statistics show that Pakistan is among the leading countries in
terms of death toll of birth-giving women. Each year countless
women are killed in the name of honor and hundreds other are en-
trapped in legal loopholes of laws, like those of the Blasphemy
laws, whereby producing just two witnesses against a person con-
victs them and qualifies them for capital punishment.
In a nutshell, the life of women in Pakistan is sheer hell- no com-
forts, no concessions no nothing!

Celebrations as Higgs bos-on is finally discovered
Almost 50 years af-ter its existence was first predicted, the breakthrough means that the standard model of particle physics, which ex-plains all known par-ticles and the forces that act upon them, is now complete. A Higgs boson with a mass of around 125 to 126 gigaelec-tronvolts (GeV) Even by particle physicists' strict standards, that's statistically signifi-cant enough to count as a particle discovery.

Photon reaches
from beyond
the grave in
quantum trick
EINSTEIN mockingly
called it "spooky ac-
tion at a distance": the
finding that quantum
particles can influence
each other regardless
of how far apart they
are. We can only im-
agine his horror at a
new experiment that
extends the idea to
time by entangling a
pair of photons that
never coexisted. As
well as expanding the
reach of quantum the-
ory's baffling implica-
tions, the experiment
could improve long-
distance cryptography.
This session was conducted to inform the female students re-
garding IEEE WIE & the benefits of joining IEEE WIE. This
session was the first step towards the establishment of IEEE
WIE Affinity Group (AG) at MUET and to provide a platform
to the female students to show their talent in Engineering, Sci-
ence & Technology and also to make them active socially.
In the end, the Chief Guest of the event, Prof. Dr. BS Chow-
dhry, Dean, FEECE, MUET & Branch Counselor of IEEE-
MUET Student Branch, praised the efforts of the Executive
Committee of IEEE-MUET Student Branch and the female
student membersfor organizing such an informative session.
He also emphasized that these types of events should be orga-
nized in the future and showed his full support towards the fu-
ture events.
