TEMPORARY CLOSURE - CROSS STREET RESERVE HOWLONG The Cross Street Reserve in Howlong was recently returned to public access. The reserve links around to Memorial Park Reserve and provides a recreation space for walking, fishing, bird watching and swimming - see aerial image below. Unfortunately, since opening the reserve there has been a range of inappropriate uses including firewood collection, camping and off-road driving that may cause damage to the reserve. As such the reserve has been temporarily closed to allow for control measures to be implemented. The reserve is expected to be re-open for public access in 4 weeks’ time. The tourism team have been working with the Corowa Girl Guides to paint and hide rocks for children to discover as they visit locations throughout the council area. Here’s how to get involved; 1. Go exploring and see if you can find any painted rocks with the hastag #federationregionrocks on the back. Public places like parks and playgrounds are good spots to visit! 2. Share (or ask an adult to share) a photo of the rocks you find on social media using the hashtag #federationregionrocks and where you found the rocks. 3. Re-hide the rocks for someone else to discover! 4. Each social media post using the hashtag will go into the draw to win a ‘School Holiday Pack’ valued at $100. Entries close Monday 30 July 2018. The theme for NAIDOC Week in 2018 is Because of Her, We Can. Held nationally from Sunday 8 July through to Sunday 15 July, this year’s NAIDOC theme celebrates the significant role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played - and continue to play - as social and cultural leaders in their communities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, they have fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate indigenous culture, language, music and art. Federation Council celebrated NAIDOC week 2018 in partnership with Many Mobs Aboriginal community group from Yarrawonga/Mulwala which is headed by Sarah Hill and her mother Iris. Celebrations included a magnificent display of Indigenous Art Works at Corowa Art Space from 4th July until 14th July. The official opening on Tuesday attracted around 60 people, including 40 young people from GoodStart, Corowa and Wahgunyah Country Buddies who were entertained by dance and music artist Brett Ross.
