MGIB-SR Chapter 1606:MGIB-SR Chapter 1606:Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) is a federally funded program administered by the Veterans Administration (VA) for educational development of Guard/Reserve component service members. Eligible soldiers receive a maximum of 36 months of MGIB benefits for full time study. Payments are prorated for part time study. For additional information visit their web site at

The MGIB-SR program may be available soldiers who are a member of the Selected Reserves, which includes the Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard. Here are some of the benefits:

-10 years of eligibility, 14 yrs eligibility after Oct 1, 1992

-36 months of benefits (for full time study).

-Associate, Bachelor, Masters, and Doctoral degrees.

-Vocational Training.

-Independent Training.

-OJT/Apprenticeship Programs.

-Eligible for VA Work study. **No “Pay In” involved like the Active Duty GI Bill…..

-Be an active drilling member of the ARNG.

-Enlist, reenlist, or extend in the ARNG for a period of not less than 6 years. If you are an officer, you must agree to serve 6 years (DA form 5447-R) in addition to any current obligation.

-High School graduate or equivalent.

-Complete Basic and Advance Individual Training, (AIT). If you are an officer and were under the OCS enlistment, you must complete OBC.

-Must obtain a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) form from their component’s GI Bill Manager.

MGIB-AD has proven to be extremely popular among young people enlisting in the services. 94.8 percent of those who enlisted in service in Fiscal Year 1996 enrolled in the program. 75.7 percent of all enlistees since the inception of the program have enrolled. The following briefly summarizes major MGIB provisions: -Served on active duty after June 30, 1985. -Served at least 2 yrs on active duty consecutively. -Must fulfill one's basic service obligation. -Must have completed high school. -Received an honorable discharge. -Maximum entitlement is 36 months for full time study. -Additional "kicker" as determined by DOD. -Generally must use benefits within 10 years following discharge.

MGIB-AD Chapter 30

REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W. Regan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. It is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress.  This new program makes certain individuals who were activated after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits

Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

The MGIB Kicker is an additional benefit to the GI Bill that soldiers may be eligible for at the time of enlistment and re-enlistment. Eligibility varies according to the soldier’s status.

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)

VEAP is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances

National Call to Service

This National Call to Service Incentive program requires a participant to perform a period of national service to be eligible for benefits.  It is a Department of Defense program that is administered by VA.

Accelerated Payment for MGIB-AD

An accelerated payment is a lump sum payment of 60% of tuition and fees for certain high cost, high tech programs. To qualify, you must be enrolled in a high tech program and you must certify that you intend to seek employment in a high tech industry as defined by VA. Accelerated payment is paid instead of Montgomery GI Bill benefits that you would otherwise receive.

Tuition Assistance “Top-Up”

On October 30, 2000, the President signed into law an amendment to the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty education program that permits VA to pay a Tuition Assistance Top- up benefit. The amount of the benefit can be equal to the difference between the total cost of a college course and the amount of Tuition Assistance that is paid by the military for the course.

Licensing and Certification

You can receive reimbursement for licensing and certification tests you take on or after March 1, 2001. These tests must be specifically approved for the G.I. Bill. Work-Study Program

This program is available to any student receiving VA education benefits who is attending school three-quarter time or more. An individual working under this program may work at the school veterans' office, VA Regional Office, VA Medical Facilities, or at approved State employment offices.
