OSE Spotlight on Domestic Violence Awareness Month

By: The Office of Domestic Violence Strategies

If you keep your eyes peeled during October you might find an increasein the amount of purple you see – on social media; around the city; andacross the nation – because October is National Domestic ViolenceAwareness Month. Across the country, advocates who are working to enddomestic violence, also called intimate partner violence, will observe themonth with diverse programming aimed at: mourning those who have dieddue to domestic violence; celebrating those who have survived abuse; andconnecting those who work to end violence. Luckily, to get involved in thisnational movement you don’t have to look farther than here in our own city.

Last year during October, Mayor Kenny established a new office withinthe Managing Director’s Office. Since then, the Office of Domestic ViolenceStrategies has worked to help coordinate and improve the City’s response todomestic violence. It is a small office of just two individuals, but their workoperates on a large scale trying to connect institutions from around the cityto better address domestic violence. The office works very closely with thefive domestic violence agencies here in Philadelphia: Congreso de LatinosUnidos; Lutheran Settlement House; Menergy; Women Against Abuse; andWomen in Transition, most of which will be holding events during thismonth.

Kicking off the month on October 4, is Women Against Abuse’siPledge Campaign. Entering its 10 year, Women Against Abuse’s iPledgecampaign calls upon Philadelphians to pledge to speak out when they hearor witness violence. Over 3,800 Philadelphians have already taken thepledge and you can too!

Join us in Painting Philly Purple on October 5! Philadelphia CityCouncil will read their proclamation in recognition of Domestic ViolenceAwareness Month. Share your pictures wearing purple or share why endingdomestic violence is important to you on social media with the #DVAM2017and #PaintPhillyPurple.

On October 11, Lutheran Settlement House is once again holdingtheir annual Men Can Rally on Thomas Paine Plaza. This rally honors men ofPhiladelphia who speak out against violence helping to break the stigma ofDomestic Violence as just a women’s issue. Women in Transition inconjunction with poets from around the city will hold their event, AmplifyingOur Voices, on October 18. The event is designed to begin conversations, spread awareness of resources and bring domestic violence out of the dark.Ending the month, on October 26, Congreso de Latinos Unidos’ LatinaDomestic Violence Program will be continuing their annual candlelight vigiland monologue performance. The monologues, performed in both Englishand Spanish, represent individuals lived experiences of violence, survival, and empowerment.

If you are not able to attend any of these events but would like tosupport initiatives to stop domestic violence, you can visit the new blogpage of the City’s DV Office to learn about resources available.

September has the ability to be the perfect bridge

between summer and fall. The events taking place

definitely reflect that ability. From beginning to end, we

saw events that were filled with fun times all around.

Face painting, food trucks, bounce houses, and more

were seen at events and festivals throughout the city.

There’s no better time to bring the kids out with you and

enjoy the wonderful change in

weather as we move into fall.

Featured in our banner is a scene from theannual Puerto Rican Day Parade. Many of the PhiladelphiaCity Council members came out to support the annualcommunity event and advocate for donations in wake ofHurricane Maria. Finally, OSE staff members Robert Allen,Olivia Gillison and Natalie Faragalli went to Tucson, Arizonato represent Philadelphia as we were awarded theInternational Festival & Event Association, World Festivaland Event City award for the 4 consecutive year!
