The Lunar New Year is traditionally ushered in with a generous splash of visual and colourful elements that depict the Zodiac year as well as those symbolising hopes and aspirations. West Coast GRC therefore welcomed the Rooster Year on 28 Jan 2017 with visuals of a strong and confident rooster looking ahead with a progressive, forward looking direction. At the same time, a promise of success and prosperity in the year ahead was characterised by prominent displays of the God of Wealth.

A Happy Lunar New Year to all, with good health, success, and harmony in our community!

WEST COAST TOWN’S COLOURFUL YEAR OF THE ROOSTER

Were you born in the Year of the Rooster? The Rooster Year starts from 28 Jan 2017 (Chinese New Year) to 15 Feb 2018. The Years of the Rooster include 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029.

The Rooster, the tenth in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, symbolises fidelity and punctuality. It is said that in olden days, before the days of clocks, its crowing was a call for people to get up and start work.

People born in the Year of Rooster are believed to be endowed with virtues such as honesty, intelligence and ambition. They are usually self-reliant, warm-hearted and quick-minded though some could do with more patience and generosity towards others, to realise their goals in life. Mr Pek Ee Perh, Thomas, PBM

RESOUNDING YES! TO PRECINCT RENEWALResidents of Boon Lay Drive can anticipate more upgraded amenities in the precinct for Block 257 to 267 and 257A (MSCP) as they recently participated in the Public Consultation Exercise for the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP). By supporting the programme, residents will soon be enjoying new features that will transform their environment and enhance their quality of living.

“You can look forward to new facilities such as directional signs, seating facilities, adult and elderly fitness corners, covered walkway, park shelters, communal hall, jogging tracks etc. Existing residents’ corner, communal hall, community garden, children’s playgrounds, games court and footpaths will also be upgraded,” said Mr Patrick Tay, Adviser to Boon Lay Grassroots Organisations and MP for West

Coast GRC, when he encouraged residents to support the upgrading during the Public Consultation Exercise held from 30 September to 3 October 2016. Overwhelming responses were received from the residents. Following up, a Consensus Gathering Exercise will take place in the second quarter of 2017 to gather support from at least 75% of the eligible lessees in the neighbourhood.

What’s more, residents do not need to pay for the NRP. The estimated cost of $2.78 million is fully funded by the Government and the programme is implemented by the Town Council.

Ms Ng, a resident of West Coast GRC, wrote to say that her mother had fainted around Block 663A on one occasion in November 2016. “Mr Govin was the one who rushed to my unit and informed my family about my mother’s situation.”

She added, “My mother is in stable condition now. My mother might have lost her life as her heart beat stopped after she fainted. It was Mr Govin’s quick reaction that saved my mother’s life. He did a great job and I would like to thank him for his kindness. There is a hero hiding in your organization! Thanks again to West Coast Town Council for having a great employee like Mr Govin.”

Ms Ng recounted: “Mr Govin is hardworking and passionate about his work. He always cleans the area around Block 663A and keeps the environment tidy and clean.”

The Town Council has conveyed Ms Ng’s gratitude and appreciation to our cleaner, Govin. We would like to thank Ms Ng for her feedback and extend our well wishes to her mother on her recovery. We are proud of Govin’s public spirit in helping our residents.

Residents of West Coast Town can look forward to safer and more efficient lifts. They can expect smoother rides from improved lifts that will prevent unintended lift movements as well as multiple-beam sensors to detect objects and prevent doors from closing.

The improvements are included in the Lift Enhancement Programme (LEP), a $450 million initiative by the Government to modernise public housing lifts and to maintain high safety standards.

The programme will provide town councils with 90% funding for the improvements. It applies to lifts that have been in operation for 18 years or less. Older lifts when due for replacement will be replaced with new lifts which will come with the enhanced features.

With LEP, residents will be more assured that their lifts will be safer and run more smoothly.

This is a big plus for residents especially for the elderly and children as lifts are an essential feature of daily life.

Residents are looking forward to the improvements. Mr Lim, resident of Block 513 West Coast Road said: “I feel much better for my family’s convenience, safety and peace of mind. My parents and children also feel more assured when they take the lifts. We take the lifts often every day. The enhancement programme will benefit all residents.”

I would like to compliment Miss Keryn Ong Ke Ling, a senior property officer at West Coast Town Council. I just moved into an old flat at West Coast Road with my mother in mid-December 2016. The corridor directly outside our flat was quite dark, as the corridor lights were installed outside my 2 next door neighbours’ flats but not ours.

I called up West Coast Town Council and asked if someone could come down during the evening to check out the corridor lighting and see if they could do something about it. I was told usually they would not install an additional light as it would affect other neighours as well. Fair enough. Perhaps the inspector involved only looked at the corridor but did not realize our doorway was in almost complete darkness.

A day later, I sent them 2 pictures of how our doorway looks at night and got a call from Miss Keryn Ong this time. She informed me that after seeing the pictures, she shares my concern. She would like to install an additional light but as the lighting could not be installed

Dear Ms Wong,

First and foremost, I would like to say a big thank you for your team’s effort in improvising the living condition of my block. I can see and spot the differences and of course, it’s towards the positive side. I hope that this continuous cooperation between the Town Council and residents will always be ongoing. I know managing my block and the rest is not an easy feat but I know you guys can overcome it eventually as at times we need the By-Laws to be executed

CAN YOU SP T THE DIFFERENCE?

on just 1 floor along, but all floors as well, she would have to do a site survey with our neighbours and get their agreement on it. A few days later, Miss Keryn Ong called me again and told me that she has gotten a go-ahead with the additional corridor lighting from our neighbours, and they’ll proceed with the installation ASAP. The additional light was installed right outside our flat entrance, which was what my mother and I have hoped for. Needless to say, my mother was delighted that she doesn’t have to fumble in the dark when she opens the door-lock anymore.

Without a doubt, I can confidently compliment Miss Keryn Ong as one of West Coast Town Council’s really dedicated and helpful property officer. I am really gratefuil for her help in doing the site survey & getting the lighting done so quickly.
