Lap It Up

There’s so much “buzz” about the cost of spaying and neutering our com-panion friends that we thought we’d start a new column in this is-

sue called “Opinion” (pg. 10), and right out of the gate we’re looking for your ideas and thoughts about this subject. It seems every month more and more animals need to be taken into rescue and more and more are showing up on online sites needing new homes. With our overpopulation of pets, spay and neuter has to be a high priority right next to committ ment. The message needs to get out, “If you commit to a companion pet, then commit for life.” A prime example of both of these topics is found in the story of ApplePuff and Dollop on page 16.

Also, you can fi nd us on Facebook, along with 5 million other people, but we still feel we’re prett y special...or should we say the animals that we fea-ture are. Have fun reading, and when you’re done it’s ok to say....“I could take them all home!”

Sleek, graceful, and well engineered, the cat has for centuries been an object of human myth, meta-phors and idioms. Revered or disliked with the

rise and fall of popularity, the cat, at the end of the day, is a vibrant, beautiful, warm and endearing creature, that in our current day society has, let’s face it, become as disposable as a paper bag.

To quote Bob Dylan on his 1964 album “The times they are a-changin’.

This year has been declared “Year of the Cat” by Care for Cats, a network of Canadian cat welfare advocates that includes the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS). Throughout 2011, the CFHS and other collaborators such as shelters, rescue organiza-tions, animals services, vet clinics and retailers will deliver educational messages and events across Canada to bring att ention to the major problems facing cats. The biggest problem of all? Stray cat overpopulation.

“Many people do not realize it, but when it comes to cat overpopulation and the resulting burden on animal shelters, municipalities, and communities, Canada is in crisis,” says Dr. Eliza-beth O’Brien, a veterinarian and spokesperson for Care for Cats.

How then do we put an end to this killing of an animal that deserves so much more from us? We change our perceptions. We learn to understand and accept their traits. We embrace them for their qualities as a companion animal. “The message we need to get to the public is not only about the importance of spaying and neutering cats as a means of population control,” concludes Dr. O’Brien. “we also have to try to change att itudes about the intrinsic value of cats in our society. In a nutshell, we need people to start treating cats like dogs!”

The Year of the Cat campaign will also promote a higher level of care for the 8.5 million cats living in Canadian homes. A study conducted in 2008 found that less than half of these cats received annual veterinary care and regular vac-cinations. Less than 25 per cent have permanent identifi cation.

2011, “Year of the Cat” is just the start of a for-ward movement to address current day issues and to re-brand kitt y in a positive light. Through education, adoption, and raising the status of cats in our society we can all start to make a dif-ference. For those of us working towards a bett er tomorrow for our cat population, this truly is “the cat’s meow!”

for aff ection and then greedily going towards the long pile of food spread out for them in the snow off the shoulder of the highway. Looking upon them, I would stand there making corrections with a low growl, to make sure all three would get a decent meal. Even in these very fl eeting minutes on the side of a desolate highway I would establish myself as a gentle alpha, preparing these dogs for the next step of their journey – integration with a human pack.

Many of you may ask - why not save these three deserving souls upon fi rst fi nding them? The hard part is prioritizing and deciding which of the many hundreds in this commu-nity are next to be rescued. Aft er rescuing many others that were in dire need due to severe health issues these three became a priority – they were deserving and they were at high risk due to their location close to a main highway. Not to mention their outward longing to be with someone.

What really spurred the rescue of this pack was the fact that Missy Momma was observed pregnant last October.

It was last spring that I fi rst happened upon this pack of three dogs aimlessly wandering the highways of a rural community. The three – Missy Momma, Grett a Galiena,

and Daphinee Davina - became one of many packs of dogs that I fed in this rural community. All were waiting to be rescued and off ered a second chance with forever families. These deserving companion animals wander 20-50km a day simply in search of their next meal, or driven by the need to mate.

Many nights I would drive out to this community with a trunk full of food to feed these starving strays. This pack of dogs and many others would come chasing aft er my car knowing that their next meal had arrived. In the midst of the night, no matt er the season, I would open my car door and start calling to the strays in the area. On this particu-lar stretch of highway, I would wait blindly, straining to hear the nails against the pavement of Missy, Grett a, and Daphinee. Out of the darkness, these three gentle souls would emerge, half crawling on the highway, fi rst begging

We guessed she only had a couple of weeks left in her preg-nancy. We scrambled to fi nd a foster home for this gentle girl – one that would foster her through her pregnancy. Aft er fi rming up foster care, we went out to rescue her. All three of them came clamouring for att ention, but unfortu-nately due to the lack of foster homes I could only bring Missy home with me that night. The most diffi cult part of the work we do is leaving behind the ones that are beg-ging to be rescued. Every night we say a prayer for those that are waiting for their second chance – we said many for Missy, Grett a, and Daphinee. The wonderful Missy Momma gave birth – just four days later – to six healthy beautiful pup-pies. She was an amazing Mommy and beamed ear to ear with pride – proud of her six litt le bundles of joy. People all over Western Canada fell in love with Missy Momma and her story. Even before she had weaned her puppies she had her forever home wait-ing for her. Aft er weaning her pups, gett ing spayed, and putt ing on some much deserved weight she made a long one-way trip out to her thoroughly screened forever home in Vancouver, British Columbia! She is in absolute heaven with her kitt y brother and her new Mom and Dad.

The story continues with the rescue of Grett a Galiena in November. Of course, in the world of rescue things never go as planned! We had intended to rescue Daphinee and Grett a together so that one of the dogs would not have to remain out there by herself. However, on the day of the rescue, Grett a decided to jump into the car and was ready to start her new life! Poor Daphinee though was so scared and submissive no amount of eff ort could get her to do the same. Quite oft en, we only have one chance. Roam-ing strays are smart – if we fail, they are oft en too scared to come up to us for a second try. With a heavy heart and absolute frustration, we left Daphinee on her own – so many prayers were said for this girl so that she would gain enough confi dence to be rescued, and that she would be graced with the opportunity for a bett er life.

Grett a was driven straight to the vet clinic, where she actually resided for two whole weeks – she became the clinic dog and did not want to leave at the end of her stay!

During the two weeks we pondered whether or not we should bring Grett a back out to try and lure Daphinee. But with a sudden cold snap and the snowfall in November we decided it would simply not be a wise decision. Grett a is a Great Pyrenees cross, and being white she ran the high-est risk of being hit by cars during the winter – we could not put Grett a in such a position. Grett a was spayed and moved to her foster home in Vulcan, Alberta. She became best friends with the resident dog (a former Rescue for Life dog) and her foster family worked towards making her that well rounded family pet – she loved all the att ention!

Through the eff orts of the Manitoba Great Pyrenees and Mixed Breed Rescue, Grett a found her forever family – all the way in Brandon, Manitoba. The Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) located in Stony Plain, then helped to co-ordinatethe trans-portation of Grett a to her anxiously waiting for-ever family. Aft er many delays due to bad weather, Grett a Gali-ena is now residing with her four-legged pack and he Mommy and Daddy – she is thrilled!

This brings us to the third member of the pack – the ever deserving Daphinee. Aft er surviving the wait, Daphinee was rescued in December. It appeared aft er Grett a’s rescue, Daphinee’s world had fallen apart – she no longer had a pack leader, she had to learn to become her own leader. I spent many evenings out in this rural community trying to lure Daphinee, but she did not have the confi dence to trust and simply remained elusive. I kept up with the food drops so that she knew I still cared about her. About three weeks aft er losing Greta’s company, I noticed, on occa-sion, Daphinee was starting to come out of her shell. On one of my midnight food drops, I spott ed Daphinee at the very last minute, coming out of the bush to eat some food. I jumped in my car, so not to scare her away, and rolled down both the front windows. It was very cold out and I sat there with the heat blowing on me, not sure she would come to me on her own. I sat in my car and I started calling her in my usual way – almost like a kissing sound,

ApplePuffabout the friendliest cat we’d ever met. The morning aft er we rescued her, I brought her to the South Side Ani-mal Hospital, where I worked as an Animal Care Att endant. She was given a clean bill of health, and we were told that she could give birth at any time. The following month was a bit nerve-wracking. We kept a very close eye on Applepuff , and she went into false labour a couple of times. Thankfully, the SSAH vets were incredibly helpful and supportive, even making a couple of house-calls! I was confi dent that no matt er what, Applepuff was in good hands.

On February 13, at around 5pm, a very excited Adam called me at work. Applepuff was fi nally giving birth! I rushed home to fi nd that she had already borne 2 kitt ens, but there were defi nitely more on the way. Adam and I sat with her during the whole mirac-ulous process. Aft er the fourth kitt en,

We found the ad in the newspaper just over 2 years ago. “Free to

good home: two 4 month old kitt ens, and an 8 week pregnant cat.” Litt le alarm bells sounded in my head; an unwanted cat who was pregnant for the second time within 2 months of giving birth isn’t a sign of a particu-larly responsible guardian. Just as disconcerting was the fact that there was no phone number listed, only an address. I phoned my sister right away, and asked if she could give my boyfriend (Adam) and me a ride to a house to rescue a cat. She sighed knowingly, and agreed. My sister is very familiar with my focus on animal welfare.

Aft er driving around for over an hour in some shift y neighbourhoods, we fi nally found the place we were look-ing for; a tiny basement suite right across from Rexall Place. The man who opened the door for us looked as though he’d lived through some hard times, and the suite was musty and fi lled with smoke. He informed us that the two kitt ens had been claimed earlier that day, but that the momma cat still needed a home. He crept into a bedroom and reappeared moments later with a bulgingly pregnant, short- haired calico. Her name was Puff , but we decided to call her ApplePuff .

We set her up in a spare bedroom all decked out with space-heaters, loads of blankets, a matt ress, and lots of hiding spots where she could nest. We fell in love with her immediately. She was incredible well-adjusted, and just

she was noticeably exhausted, and we knew that she still wasn’t fi nished. We assisted in the delivery of the fi ft h and sixth kitt ens, tore the umbilical cords and cleared the aft erbirth from their faces. It was one of the most intense experiences of our lives. When all of the kitt ens were sett led and feeding, we gave them some privacy. As soon as the kitt ens were out of her, we were shocked at how emaciated Applepuff was; she had obviously been severely neglected at her previous home. Luck-ily she had a big appetite, so we had no trouble at all putt ing weight on her.

The kitt ens grew incredibly fast, and being a part of it was a joy… it was fascinating how they all had such distinct personalities right from the start. We took them for regular vet visits to make sure they were all healthy and had their vaccines; and the only kitt en who had any health concern was Dollop, who had a Grade

I heart murmur. The vet informed us that they can oft en grow out of them, but we decided to wait for Dollop’s to clear up before re-homing her. As soon as they were weaned, Applepuff was spayed (she had already had 2 litt ers of 6 before she was even a year and a half old!), and we began to search for proper homes for all of the kit-tens. Toth Renoir and Xiomara went to a friend of ours, (and we still get to visit with them quite oft en), Hello and Scuba Steve went to a couple that was recommended by our vet, and Butt ers went to our friend’s twin sister.

The sixth kitt en, Dollop, remained with us. By the time her heart murmur had disappeared Adam and I were much too att ached to let her go. We also kept Applepuff , (who now mostly goes by Mama-Puff ), and she and Dollop are thick as thieves! All of the kitt ens were spayed and neutered.

As much as helping to raise kitt ens was an experience that I will never forget, I strongly encourage everyone to have their animals spayed and neu-tered. Cats are enormously overpopu-lated, reproduce very quickly, and

The Pepsi Refresh Contest is an across Canada contest sponsored by Pepsi Refresh that is looking for the best ideas of individuals, businesses and non-prof-its that will have a positive impact on their communities.

The next day I took her to the vet clinic for a vet check and an ultrasound to make sure she was not pregnant. She was

then placed into foster care. Daphinee is the third remaining pack member of the “troupe” and we oft en ask her “Where do you think your forever family is going to be?” Daphinee is up for adoption with Rescue for Life – she is an amazingly gentle, sub-missive girl, who is great with dogs, cats, and now of course loves people.

Rescue is not an easy job. It takes dedi-cation, patience, and also a bit of luck. Many prayers are oft en said. The rescue of just one animal oft en takes the co-ordi-nation of many volunteers, many rescue

groups, and vet clinics. Working together these deserving companion animals get that amazing second chance at life. Please support rescue!

Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS) has been work-ing hard for over a year creating a safe haven for rescue animals before they are adopted out to their new lifelong homes. However, the society now fi nds itself at risk, and along with it the many animals that might, in the future, have benefi ted from its existence. Terry Colborn, president and founder of BARS, noticed a real need in the Barrhead area for an animal rescue organization, his love for animals spurred him on to save the abandoned and abused from his area, and today BARS is recognized as a non-profi t, charitable organization which accredits saving about 120 animals in its list of accomplishments.

Their problem, unfortunately, due to health reasons, is Colborne will no longer be able to continue in the role of president. With his term ending Sept. 30, he is looking to secure candidates for the role by June 30, otherwise the organization may cease to exist – something Colborne does not want to see happen.

He fully maintains a vision for the society and knows that in order to go forward as a successful and meaningful operation some things have to change. First, BARS needs to elect a new president who is able to put forth a no-non-sense mandate with a clear vision that includes short and long term goals. A development program for expanding foster care needs to be implemented, and the society needs

to increase the scope of its funding through grants, per-sonal donations, and fundraising activities. Having a clear picture of the future will help the society to move smoothly toward its primary mandate of rescuing animals.

Kudo’s to Paradise Pet CentreThere has been a fl urry of media surrounding the decision of Paradise Pet Centre, St Albert, to use their store to adopt out rescue animals and to end the sale of dogs, puppies, cats and kitt ens that has been their practice for the last 30 years.

This is a “forward thinking move” and sets the tone for other pet stores, who are currently providing companion pets for sale, to change their policies.

In conjunction with the Edmonton Humane Society and other rescue organi-zations the store is promoting the adoption of homeless companion animals to help curb the pet overpopulation in our area. One hundred percent of the adoption money will go back to the rescue societies adopting from their store.
