Furniture design, now a big issue inSoutheast Asia, is also at the heart ofPicotee’s new direction with outsidedesigners working from Spain and theU.S.A. on new models to enable thecompany to diversify its marketing.This includes attacking its owndomestic market for the first time.Already, a trial outlet has beenopened in Bangkok as interest inlifestyle develops among Thailand’sburgeoning middle class and youngupwardly mobile population. One leading lifestyle magazine,“Daybeds”, alone has grown from5,000 to 100,000 circulation in sevenyears. Meanwhile Picotee’s youngmarketing manager is trying allangles. The economic financial crisis of 2009has been tough on Picotee. Whereasmany producers in Southeast Asiahave diversified export markets andmany have benefitted from thedynamic growth of Asia domestic mar-kets, “We have been loyal to our U.S.buyers,” said Pinitkanchanapan. “Asthey have grown, so we have withthem. But the current state of the U.S.market will either force us to diversifyaway or at least develop new productsso that we can offer a wider range.”Today the company is running under

Picotee’s market is in the furniturerange and offers highly competitiveproducts, mainly flat packed and gen-erally small in scale with very littleunstained. So this will enable the com-pany to consider competitive gradesof American hardwood while seekingto overcome all the issues of currency,lower market demand and generallyhigher cost raw material.Throughout the plant there is evi-dence of control standards and test-ing. The company is ISO:9001 2008certified by SGS and proud of the factthat it dates back to 2001. In the longterm, Paiboon Pinikanchanapun isconfident that Thailand can maintainits competitive position as a furnitureproducer despite some fears aboutthe growth of mass production innearby Vietnam and of course fromChina. But his hope is that Thailand’sproduction units, which are mainlysmaller than in neighboring countries,will find a way towards bulk buying ofAmerican hardwood lumber, for hebelieves that is the way forward for hisindustry to reduce reliance onRubberwood. Added to that is thecompany’s hope that American hard-wood exporters will pay particularattention to thickness accuracyrequirements to which Rubberwoodbuyers in Thailand are accustomed. Lumber is kilndried to six to eight percent moisturecontent. A great deal ofthis material is processed through themoulders into a wide range of prod-ucts, from bases and casings, chairrails, crown moulding, panel mould-ings, picture frames and more. “Wehave one customer who turns mould-ings into wooden crosses,” Piercenoted. Moulding products are outlinedin Holt & Bugbee’s print and 132-pageonline catalogs. Once a product is ready for delivery,shipping expediters prepare the orderfor shipment on one of Holt &Bugbee’s 14 trucks. Delivery routesare complex and can encompassshipments from one to 10 or 12 cus-tomers before returning to the distri-bution yards.Final placement of Holt & Bugbee’smost specialized profile and primingorders have graced such locations asthe British Museum in the UnitedKingdom, universities such asHarvard, the Time Warner building inNew York City, and even a custom-moulding cabinet (from some of thefinest Cherry in the world) for Tiffany’sJewelers. The first is expansion of thecompany’s sales force. “That’s why weadded the Boyertown location,” hesaid, “to reach into the Delaware,Maryland, Ohio and Virginia area.”Pierce sees Holt & Bugbee’s futuregrowth also emerging from the com-pany’s increasing ability to customdesign and produce high-end mould-ings and other millwork. “For a distri-bution yard, we dry a high percentageof our own timber,” he noted. “We evenhave the ability to dry the thicker 8/4,10/4 and 12/4 Red and White Oaklumber.” Custom-design moulding orders aredeveloped on a computer-aided-design (CAD) system. The knives arecustom-ground by a team of six full-time craftsmen. “Bulk orders arebecoming easier to outsourcethroughout the industry,” said Pierce.Customers of custom millwork includehigh-end retail lumberyards, as wellas contractors for high-end commer-cial work such as public buildings,libraries and high-end restaurants.Pierce’s plans to reduce Holt &Bugbee’s dependence on fossil fuelare in complete alignment with thecompany’s parallel green initiative.“We’ve been a member of the ForestStewardship Council for three yearsnow,” he said. “All our drying process-es are 100 percent fueled by woodwaste.” In addition to Phillip Pierce as presi-dent, other key personnel at Holt &Bugbee Co. include Roger Pierce Jr.,vice president; William Collins, vicepresident; Wayne Blaisdell, vice presi-dent; Eric D’Annolfo, general managerat Mt. In the second quarter of the fiscalyear 2010-2011, the manufacturingand construction sectors grew 8.9percent and 8.8 percent respectively,enabling economic growth to exceedthe forecast of 8.2 percent growth forthe period. 23 percent of the total land area andthe plan is to expand it to 33 percentwithin the next ten years. Better soiland water conservation and afforesta-tion efforts will result in expandingagriculture, less migration to cities andimproved livelihoods.The efforts of the government of India

are supplemented by plantations ofPoplar, Eucalyptus, Casuarinas,Semul, Gmelina among othersspecies, in order to improve raw mate-rial supply. NGOs are establishingplantations for fruit and medicinalplants including mango, tamarind andebony. Established plantations ofEugenia, Mimusops, Subabul, Sissoo,Neem and Acacia provide timber forthe construction and furniture indus-tries.

•Indonesia

The Indonesian government is opti-mistic that its furniture sector's partic-ipation in the International Furnitureand Design Exhibition will help pro-mote sales of Indonesian furnitureproducts in the Middle East.According to analysts, the building

sector in the Middle East and particu-larly in Qatar is booming with the com-pletion of several residential, hospital-ity and commercial construction proj-ects. The Indonesian Trade Ministryalso hopes that the exhibition will helptap these markets and promote tradebetween Qatar and Indonesia whosegrowth has slowed to 4.76 percent inrecent months.Exports continue to decline due to

difficult conditions in the main marketsfor Indonesia, mainly Japan, the U.S.and the Middle East. Recent statisticsreleased by the Forestry IndustryRevitalization Agency (BRIK), showthat the volume of exports for 2010amounted to only 1.9 million cu.m.,down 11 percent from 2.1 millioncu.m. registered in the same time peri-od a year earlier. In value terms how-ever, exports increased by 2.2 percentto US$847 million for the same period.Officials said the decline in exports is

attributed to the strengthening of theIndonesian Rupiah against the U.S.dollar, which has the effect of makingIndonesian products more expensiveand less competitive in the interna-tional markets. The appreciation of theIndonesian Rupiah has also erodedthe profit margins of producers.Most prices of Indonesian timber

remain unchanged. The winter seasonis beginning in the Northern countries.Sources said most buyers are windingdown their purchases and operationsas a result of the traditional seasonalslow-down.

•Malaysia

Two Malaysian timber companies,Permaju Industries Bhd and EksonsCorp Bhd are diversifying from theircore businesses and moving intoproperty development as theMalaysian property market continuesto heat up.According to statistics provided by

the National Property InformationCentre (NAPIC), the average price ofa residential property in Malaysia hasrisen by 16 percent during the first halfof this year to RM212,815(US$68,600). Residential propertiesin Malaysia are the most expensive inSoutheast Asia and Singapore.

Property development is a lucrativebusiness especially for those with agood reputation and status. Propertydevelopers are allowed to collect pay-ments and deposits from potentialbuyers, when projects are launched.The Malaysian International Furniture

Fair (MIFF) 2011 will be held at thePutra World Trade Centre (PWTC)and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre(KLCC), from March 1st through the5th in 2011. The MIFF will provide80,000 square meters of exhibitionfloor space.

•Guyana

During the period under review, therewere some exports of Greenheartlogs in fair and sawmill qualities.Purpleheart log prices remained rela-tively stable for all qualities while Moralog prices were down.For sawnwood, undressed

Greenheart prices were improved forthe prime, select and sound qualities.Undressed Purpleheart prices slippedwhile Mora prices continued to hold.Dressed Greenheart top-end pricesrose from US$890 per cu.m. toUS$1,450 per cu.m., but the exportedvolumes were small. Prices fordressed Purpleheart remained steadyin the period under review.This period saw exports of lesser

used species to the European marketat good average prices. Guyana’sWashiba (Ipe) continues to be indemand in the U.S. market attractingan average price of US$1,750 percu.m. Roundwood, Fuelwood andSplitwood made notable contributionsto total export earnings with the maindestinations being the Caribbean,Europe and North America. Averageprices for Splitwood reached a high ofUS$969 per cu.m.For the time period, exports of value-

added products were significant. Themajor exported products were doors,indoor furniture, windows, mouldingsand spindles. Species used in themanufacturing of these productsincluded Greenheart, Purpleheart,Crabwood and Kabukalli. TheCaribbean was the major market forGuyana’s value-added products.

•Japan

In the first eight months of 2010, logexports from Sarawak amounted to2.7 million cu.m. Out of the total logexport volume, India took 1.48 millioncu.m, China 434,000 cu.m., TaiwanP.O.C 353,000 cu.m., and Japan250,000 cu.m. The Japanese LumberReports (JLR) notes that Japan is nolonger the main player in theSoutheast Asian log market.In 2009, log production in Sabah

totaled 4.3 million cu.m. For 2010, pro-duction was far less at 1.3 millioncu.m. in the first six months. As aresult of low supply and aggressivesourcing by Chinese companies, logprices tend to rise. In addition, therainy season is expected to furthercurtail log supply, reports JLR.In Sabah, Kapur log prices received

US$270 per cu.m, up US$2-3 percu.m. Sabah Keruing log prices stoodat US$247 per cu.m. for regular andUS$270-280 per cu.m. for sawmillquality (diameter 70-80 cm & up).Sarawak Kapur log prices reached

US$300 per cu.m. as a result of activebuying for the Indian market.The Japanese government is current-

ly negotiating on joining the TransPacific Partnership (TPP), a free tradeagreement between Singapore, NewZealand, Australia, Chile, Peru,Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei and theU.S.A.According to JLR, the National

Council for Forest Products TradeMeasure, consisting of 22 forest andwood industry groups, voted againstjoining the TPP. The Council insiststhat liberalization of the timber tradewould have serious impacts on thedomestic wood and timber productindustry. In addition, the Council

ed only five percent of Canadianexports in 2009, Canada's reliance onthe U.S. market is edging down. In2000, the U.S. bought 84 percent ofCanadian exports and by 2009 thenumber had dropped to 74 percent.Canada's total exports were expectedto grow by only 2.4 percent in 2010and another 8.5 percent in 2011, withmost of the gains coming in the sec-ond half of the year, the board fore-casts. In 2012, once the recovery is infull swing, exports will surge 14.6 per-cent.Recently the Canadian Association ofRealtors projected a nine percentdrop in housing for 2011, but revisedthat projection to an eight percentincrease (from 402,000 projection toa little over 420,000 for 2011). The Bank of Canada announced inearly December that it would hold itsinterest rate at one percent until 2011,and likely much longer. But analystsfocused on the accompanying state-ment from the governor which con-ceded that both the Canadian andglobal recoveries are struggling understiffening headwinds of risk, as a sig-nal of future intentions. “The global economic recovery isproceeding largely as expected,although risks have increased,’’ thestatement said, citing renewed con-cerns that European debt woes willspill into global financial markets.The bank said demand in the U.S.remains weak, and even generallyrobust emerging markets such asChina and India are seeing a deceler-ation of economic activity.“The recovery in Canada, in the sec-ond half of 2010, appears slightlyweaker than the bank projected large-ly as a result of falling exports,” itadded.“This underlines a previously identi-fied risk that a combination of disap-pointing productivity performance andpersistent strength in the Canadiandollar could dampen the expectedrecovery of net exports.’’Canada’s annual inflation rate slowedmore than expected in November2010 from a two-year high in October,providing relief for the central bank asit seeks to keep interest rates low tosupport the still-fragile recovery. The Consumer Price Index edged up0.1 percent in the month for an annu-al rate of two percent, StatisticsCanada said. That was down from 2.4percent annual inflation in the previ-ous month and below the market fore-cast of 2.2 percent, pushing theCanadian dollar to a session low.
