FEBRUARY/MARCH 2010 The View from Here: “Angels Can Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly” In just a few weeks, Willow Grove UMC will join Christians of many denominations, all around the world, in celebrating an ancient tradition, made new. February 14 in church will be Holy Humor Sunday. On that day, just before the solemn period of Lent that leads up to Easter, we will celebrate the joy we know as followers of the resurrected Christ. Holy Humor Sunday is based on sound theology and history. It is a modern adaptation of the ancient custom of Easter Monday, which still is a holiday in dozens of countries, featuring picnics, parties, practical jokes, joke-telling, and boys and girls drenching each other with water. The custom is rooted in the musings of early church theologians (like Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom) that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead. Many churches throughout the United States have experienced a revival of the spirit when they allow the everyday humor of life to be expressed in this special worship service. One pastor re-wrote the communion liturgy for his church to read: “Giving thanks to God is a good and a joyful task, to be done with smiles on our faces and laughter in our hearts; for it is God who created us creatures of mirth and joy…the God who helped us overcome the gloominess in our own lives." We invite you not just to come and watch, but to be part of the fun. Don‟t stay away because it‟s something new. Come with open hearts and minds. We will be irreverent in all the most tasteful ways. We will worship God with a song in our heart, and maybe a silly hat on our head, but in the true spirit of God‟s gift of healing through laughter and joy. The Rev. Daniel McDonald wrote, "Laughter releases tension, and we have enough of that these days. I think we all need to stop taking ourselves so seriously. We need to recognize that this is really God's world, and He has so much in store for us. We put too much emphasis on what's wrong and what's bad with it." There will be a time to tell your favorite corny jokes. Bring them with you! Practical jokes are welcome, as long as nobody gets wet! Wear a silly hat, or better a whole crazy outfit, to get in the mood. I have personally led and participated in Holy Humor services and I know, once you overcome the initial hesitancy, it is a wonderful experience for the whole church. The choir is helping to design the service, the children will have a part, and everyone is welcome to experience the joy of the Lord. Need some ideas? Check out www.joyfulnoiseletter.com and look under Holy Humor Sunday. See you on Holy Humor Sunday, February 14. I might even wear my flamingo hat…or should I wear my Groucho Marx glasses? -Pastor Cyndi

The View from Here: “Angels Can Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly”

In just a few weeks, Willow Grove UMC will join Christians of many denominations, all around the world, in celebrating an ancient tradition, made new.

One pastor re-wrote the communion liturgy for his church to read: “Giving thanks to God is a good and a joyful task, to be done with smiles on our faces and laughter in our hearts; for it is God who created us creatures of mirth and joy…the God who helped us overcome the gloominess in our own lives."

We invite you not just to come and watch, but to be part of the fun. We put too much emphasis on what's wrong and what's bad with it."

There will be a time to tell your favorite corny jokes. See you on Holy Humor Sunday, February 14. I might even wear my flamingo hat…or should I wear my Groucho Marx glasses?

LETTERS TO OUR CONGREGATION

Dear members and friends of WiGUMC, Thank you for your many cards, gifts, and visits. I love seeing all of you. Love to all, Jackie Cooper Dear Christian friends, George and I want to thank you all for the beautiful cards (so many), the prayers and other condolences. Our granddaughter Dayna was a beautiful girl and I'm sure God had a need for her. Someday we'll see her again. We love you all, George and Ruth Roberts Pastor Cynthia and Church Family, My thanks to everyone for all the cards, phone calls, visits, prayers and flowers during my recovery from my fall. Hope to be back real soon. In Christian Love, Marie Adair "Prayer Shawls" on these cold days are deeply appreciated. This is an ongoing project. Thanks to all who made shawls for our church family and also for our veterans at the Delaware Valley Veterans Home in Philadelphia. Many notes of thanks have been received. Doris Hardcastle

Hello everyone, I'm writing to share some exciting news. Well, I think it is exciting... Many of you know my daughter, Kim, who currently lives in Colorado Springs, CO. Well, she and her husband and 2 young sons (ages 9 and 3) have made me an offer I just can't refuse. Accepting their offer means that after 22+ years as a member of WGUMC I will be leaving PA to move to CO and live with them where I can watch my 'boys' grow. Darrell will be leaving in March for his third tour in Iraq. Kim is a full-time mom, has a full-time day job, and teaches 2 nights a week at a college satellite campus. She will really need the support and I really need to be with my family. I am excited to be going - but also sad to be leaving. I'll be moving toward the end of February. Fondly, Joni Gailey Thank you, everyone. We want to say "thanks" to all of you who remembered us with cards and gifts this past season. Thanks to SPR Committee and thanks, especially, to the Chancel and Bell and Youth Choirs. Kathy Harrod and Gayle Weiand Pastor Cyndi Skripak, Aldersgate would like to extend our gratitude to your congregation for your donation of wonderful hats and gloves for "our kids." We deeply appreciate your interest and support of our mission to promote both positive healthy relationships and healthy living through our programs and services. We absolutely could not assist the community with this degree of realistic, solid impact without the openhearted charity of citizens such as you. We wish you and all the Willow Grove United Methodist families all things good in the coming New Year ! Sincerely, Deborah Sapin-Feldstein Executive Director Aldersgate

25 YEARS OF SCORING GOALS AND SOULS On Sunday, March 14

WGUMC will celebrate 25 years of outreach ministry to children and families

in our area through the indoor soccer league. Started by Dr. David Frame, the league now serves almost 100 children. They have fun, and learn good sportsmanship in a supportive and low-key competitive atmosphere. This year, one of the coaches and parents is a former player. Many young people return to be assistant coaches when they get too old to play.

Dr. Frame will return as a special guest for the 10:45 am service. He‟ll share his thoughts about the start of the league, and stay to greet old friends at Fellowship Hour after the service. We will also recognize the church members who have dedicated time and energy to run the league over the years. Join us for a special day to give thanks to God for this unique ministry.

If you know of any previously involved players, coaches, or families, please share the invitation to this special Soccer Sunday with them. The soccer league will hold its 25th Anniversary Award Banquet Saturday, March 20, at 5:00 pm in Fellowship Hall.

2010 ANNUAL CONFERENCE Bishop Peggy A.

Johnson has announced that the 2010 Annual Conference will be held May 20-22 at the Lancaster Convention Center, 3 East Vine Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. The 2010 theme: “Leading Beyond the Walls.”

DEADLINE FOR SUNDAY BULLETIN All

articles for the Sunday Bulletin Announcements must be in by noon Wednesday. Any articles received after this will be considered for the following Sunday‟s announcements.

THANK YOU to Bob Mathers and his crew for the

snow removal on the church property and to Don Petrunis for repairing the heater which keeps the organ pipes warm. We appreciate all of your help. Also, thanks to the anonymous donor of our church family who has generously provided the handicap access ramp at the church's front door.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

“Amazing Love” is a series based on the Isaac Watts hymn, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. This wonderful hymn encompasses the whole Lenten season as it asks us to look at the wonder of the cross, and also vividly paints Christ's agony and death on the cross. Watts lived in turbulent times, and as we look at his life, and the words that he has written, it is easy to see the parallels with contemporary society. You may choose daytime or evening sessions. Pastor Cyndi will lead the class on Wednesday mornings in the Lounge, 11:00 am-12 noon, beginning February 24 and ending March 24. Paul Hyde will facilitate on Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 pm at his home, February 23 through March 23. THE NEXT PASTOR'S BOOK STUDY will be on

Wednesday, March 3, at 7 pm. We are discussing "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. "Three Cups of Tea is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson‟s dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it‟s proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world," says Tom Brokaw.

HOMETOUCH MINISTRY We thank Doris

Hardcastle, Caroline Schwab and Bill Woehr for providing monthly "Hometouch” newsletters to over forty of our members, many unable to attend

worship services. If you know someone who would benefit from this service, or if you can assist, please contact Bill Woehr at 215-343-0907.

Thanks Sue for your time and commitment to WGUMC. We know you will continue to share your talents and serve our church in many other ways. The SPRC would like to remind the congregation that we are always available to listen to your comments and encourage each one of you to share your joys and concerns with us. VISITATION COMMITTEE Submitted by Cheryl DelSordo

At the present time we have twenty-nine church members on our shut-in list. Eight of our members do regular visits to these persons and deliver gift bags and plants to them on several holidays throughout the year. Three members send cards each month and three members put together gift bags with items that our shut-ins can use. We are always in need of other members to help in these three areas. In addition, we are always looking for small items to be placed in the gift bags. If you wish to donate items or offer financial support to purchase items, please contact Cheryl DelSordo.

FINANCE COMMITTEE Submitted by Keith Weller

TREASURERS OF ALL CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS need to submit their books

and all 2009 bank statements to the church office by February 14. The Finance Committee Annual Audit of all church organizations will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 23 in Room 201. We thank all the treasurers for their cooperation.

PLANNED GIVING What you put in the offering

plate is an expression of Christian stewardship of your income. You can also express Christian stewardship of your assets through gifts of stock, life insurance policies, real estate and other items either during your lifetime or under the terms of your will. Speak to the pastor for more information.

Be a love bird

Many stories about the origin of Valentine’s Day have

come down through the centuries. There’s no definitive

story, but most revolve around the imprisonment of St.

Valentine for his disregard of Roman laws.

Many legends are also associated with Valentine’s

Day. For example, because birds seemed to arrive and

mate in some countries in mid-February, human

couples came to be called “love birds.”

In 1667, the first recorded Valentine card was printed.

Today, people will give their sweethearts countless

millions of cards and acres of heart-shaped boxes filled

with candy. But why wait for Valentine’s Day to share

love with others? Remember Jesus’ words in John 13:34:

“I give you a new commandment, that you love one

another.”

FROM THE YOUTH COORDINATOR Submitted by Tom Gardner

The youth had a great time during the All-Nighter at church. Snowed out the first time, we held it the day after Christmas. We had a meaningful time in the chapel reflecting on the Light that Jesus brings to the world. We also had a blast playing all kinds of games from Steal-the-Bacon and Bomb Squad to Life and Monopoly. Catching a wink of sleep around 4am we then enjoyed breakfast at Sunday School. Thank you to all who brought items to help make this event unforgettable. Here's what we're planning: February 7th - Family Ice Skating. Come and join the youth for a fun afternoon. We'll leave from church after the 10:45 service to go to The Rink at Old York Road, 8116 Church Road in Elkins Park. Contact Tom at 215-394-5184. Cost is dependent on whether or not we qualify for group rates but will not exceed $9 per person. Bring the kids! And yes, we'll be back in plenty of time for the Super Bowl. February 14th- Happy Valentine's Day! Show someone how much you care by sending them a singing Valentine by the Youth Group. All proceeds go to benefit ASP. Look for the sign up to choose your song and sign up! March 14th- Bowling! Come for a fun evening of bowling, pizza, and laughs! March 28th- Hoagie Sale! Get lunch for the whole family straight from church. Choice of Turkey or Ham with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Cost: $5.

MUSIC MINISTRY Submitted by Gayle Wieand

Happy New Year! And the party isn't over! We make a joyful noise to the Lord every week. It's time for you to join us! Some of the same people have been having all the fun for many years now. OK, true, it is work and commitment, too, but we also try to have a good time, learn some new skills, and get to know and lift up each other.

THANKS and kudos to the choirs and Kathy Harrod

for their extra work during the Advent and Christmas season, and especially for their flexibility and good humor regarding snow storms and schedule changes. Thanks to our soloists for December and January: Linda Knauss, Diane Dilks, Wendy Erslev, Marian Demcisak, Karen Dufala and Abby Donnelly. Diane Monroe, violinist, once again delighted us with her virtuosic playing on Christmas Eve. Her rendition of Angels We Have Heard on High was inspiring and very moving. You can hear more of Diane's music at www.dianemonroemusic.com. She also has several CD's available. See Kathy or Gayle for more information. Thanks to John Goldsmith, conductor of the Heinz Chapel Choir at the University of Pittsburgh, who arranged the very moving setting of O Come O Come Emmanuel offered during worship in Advent. John is Kathy Harrod's brother-in-law.

patient Diane Dilks before regular bell rehearsal on Thursdays. Then at 7:15 pm, the incredibly mean and demanding Miss Gayle takes over. (We hope you know we're kidding about the mean part.) It helps if you can read music, but we will even teach you how to do that. Bell ringers will tell you that is really fun to play bells. It is challenging, but it is also so fulfilling to be part of an ensemble that makes such pretty music. Kids and adults welcome.

LONG TIME SINGER AND RINGER IS HEADING FOR THE MOUNTAINS! We are

both sad to say goodbye to Joni Gailey and happy to celebrate with her the new adventure into the hills of Colorado. Of course, we have already told her that she, daughter Kim, Kim's husband Darrell, and Joni's grandkids should expect to host choir rehearsals at least twice a year. Good luck, Joni, and all good wishes for your happiness. Your voice and talent will ring in our hearts forever. Come back to visit often! We'll even plan your solos with more than 5 minutes notice!

ARTISTS IN OUR CHURCH AND CHURCH COMMUNITY May is

the month for us to focus on visual arts in our worship and our lives. If you are an artist, know an artist, and/or would like to be involved in our planning for this event, please contact Kris Troxell or Gayle Weiand.

PHILOMUSICA CHORALE CONCERT April

10th, 8:00 pm at Christ‟s Lutheran Church, 700 Pennsylvania Ave., Oreland, PA. A great way to keep celebrating Easter! For our second concert this season we will feature Spanish and Latin American composers. And much of this music really has a beat! Ariel Ramirez‟ Misa Criolla was the first Mass sung in the language of the people of Argentina. Accompanied by guitar and other string and rhythm instruments, the “dueling tenors” lead the chorale in upbeat celebration and heartfelt prayer. Also on the program - our favorite soprano, Evelyn Santiago, will sing a number from one of her favorite Zarzuelas, accompanied by the choir. And young phenom, John McCarthy (Watch this young man – he will be famous - “Pavarotti famous!”) will be our Bass soloist. Diane Monroe will lead the orchestra. Philomusica Chorale is conducted by Gayle Wieand and many WGUMC Chancel Choir members sing in this community chorus. See singers or our website for more information and tickets. www.Philomusicachorale.org.

THE LIFE OF JESUS – 2010 A dramatic musical about the life of Jesus

Saturday, April 17 at 4:00 pm with light refreshments following

Sunday, April 18 at 10:45 am

What a fantastic 2009 season of “The Life of Jesus!” And this year should be even better! In 2010 the characters will be more actively involved in portraying the scenes of Jesus‟ life. We are going to practice “being in character” to help the congregation better understand the stories. Rehearsal will be in two different groups as a way of concentrating more on small groups. Watch for the sign-up posters in February. Please sign up quickly so we know about costuming and role assignments. For those of you unfamiliar with this ministry, we use songs and costumed characters to portray the life of Jesus from pre-birth through the resurrection. Most characters walk down the aisle to stand in the front of the church for a brief period of time and then exit. There are a few vocal solos. Rehearsals are the time to practice “being” a character, when we become familiar with the timing involved with the music, and a unique opportunity to get acquainted with others involved in this ministry.

A list of characters includes: Elizabeth; pregnant Mary; Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus; shepherds; angels; wise men; John the Baptist; adult Jesus; the 12 disciples; children; people to whom Jesus ministered; Joseph of Arimathea; and soldiers. The more involvement, the more fun it is! Participants do not need to be members of the church so invite others to join the cast of characters. And remember to invite friends and family to attend either of the two performances. The rehearsal schedule will be posted with the sign-up sheet. Questions: please contact Jenny Hyde (215-659-9067 or [email protected] (je underscore hyde zero zero one).

UNITED METHODIST MEN Submitted by Bill Woehr

THE METHODIST MEN express gratitude and

appreciation to our church family and friends for the most generous outpouring of gifts and toys for DEVEREAUX UNITED METHODIST CHURCH and ALDERSGATE children. Over 180 gifts were given to needy children of Devereaux and Aldersgate. Thank you.

WE ARE CONSIDERING ANOTHER TAKE-OUT CHICKEN DINNER IN APRIL Look for

the date in the next Fellowship News. We were most grateful for the success of our October dinner. We sold 175 dinners and provided 25 free dinners through Aldersgate to needy families. We also donated $1000 to the General Fund of the church.

JOE ROBERTO’S YOUTH MINISTRY Joe Roberto, one

of our own United Methodist Men for many years, works at Fort Bragg, SC with the Military Community Youth Ministries (MCYM), a non-profit Christian youth ministry whose purpose is to reach out to the adolescents of military families. MCYM meets teens where they are, loves them unconditionally and challenges them with the message of God‟s love demonstrated in the person of Jesus Christ. The journey from adolescence to adulthood has never been easy. In every generation and in every place, teenagers have struggled to come to grips with their place in the world. They want to know if there is meaning to life and if their own lives are important. The military teen has added stresses. MCYM meets a specific need for these teenagers. Please send your check to MCYM, P.O. Box 2486, Colorado Springs, CO 80901, or you may give a check or cash to Bill Woehr, UM President, and all funds will get to Joe's ministry. Part of the Christmas card donations also supported Joe's efforts.
