Transcript of FEBRUARY/FÉVRIER 2018 - Winnipeg School Division · Donald Fagen Both students and ... February is...
“When you get a groove going, the time flies.” Donald Fagen
Both students and staff are definitely in a learning groove here at École Riverview School and it’s hard to believe that
we are almost halfway through the school year! The staff at École Riverview School are a passionate group of learners
who are constantly willing to learn new things. Whether it be through teacher collaboration, professional reading or
participating in professional learning events, our teachers are modeling what new learning looks like and feels like. It
is very important to share and reflect on our own learning process with our students so they see us as continual
learners and risk takers. Over the course of the last 3 weeks, a lot of new learning has taken place. Teachers met in
grade groups and had the opportunity to spend a ½ day with our Math Support Teacher, Laure Ghia. Teachers had the
chance to look closely at the strengths and challenges of the mathematicians in their classrooms. This time together
allowed for professional dialogue on how best to support and challenge our students to ensure success for all learners.
Last week 5 staff members went to see former teacher, author and now professor, John Spencer. John Spencer talked
to us about the importance of using design thinking to boost creativity and bring out the maker in every student. The
provincial school closure on February 2rd will allow the French Immersion teachers to continue their learning on how
best to implement the new French Language Arts curriculum and our Multi-Age staff will be exploring the new English
Language Arts curriculum. Learning new things can be a messy but rewarding process. Check out this link to a video
titled: The Learning Pit https://vimeo.com/117364809 a great starting point to discuss the learning process with
your child.

A final reminder to all families that we are already planning for next year! Intent forms will be sent home on February
7th. Please take the time to fill out the form and return to the school. This information helps us determine staffing for
next year. If you know of families who are planning on registering their Nursery, Kindergarten or Grade 1 aged
children at our school for 2018/2019, please have them visit our website as a reminder of our February 28th
Information Evening. Current Riverview families unsure of which Kindergarten or grade 1 program to consider may
also wish to attend.
As always, we encourage strong communication between the home and school. We continue to use our website,
social media, notes home, our newsletter, our voice message system and email for school wide communication.
Should parents have concerns or questions we ask that they communicate with school staff so we can work together
for the best interest of our children.

CLASSROOM PLACEMENTS FOR 2018 –2019
Parents will receive forms asking whether their children will be returning to École Riverview School in September, 2018. Although it may seem early, we are already in the process of planning budgets, staffing and classroom configuraCons for next year. As a result, it is important that we receive the forms as soon as possible.
Each year school teams spend a good deal of Cme and effort creaCng socially and academically appropriate class grouping. Many factors are taken into consideraCon in an aEempt to ensure the best placement for each student. Some of the factors which we consider when deliberaCng about student placement, include:
Strong posiCve student leadership PosiCve student role models Gender balance (male/female numbers) Special learning needs of specific individual students Social dynamics among students A balance of student abiliCes in all classes formed Students new to the school Presence of students with a degree of independence in learning/work habits Twins and siblings
The school has the responsibility for the assignment of students to classes. While staff have much of the informaCon required to create balanced classes, parents may want to provide specific input about the special learning needs of your child that you would like us to keep in mind. Parental informaAon that contributes to the creaAon of balanced classes will be considered. Requests for specific teachers will not be accepted.
While no class group will be universally seen to be perfect, it is essenCal to the formaCon of the best possible learning groups that the school team will be allowed to operate for the benefit of the majority of students, while taking into account individual needs, based on all relevant informaCon available. It is our belief that the learning atmosphere in the classroom must be considered in the formaCon of classes. Classes are created to maximize learning for students. All the factors above must be taken into account. Student interacCons must be examined and classes created which capitalize on posiCve student working relaConships and avoid known negaCve student relaConship paEerns. Teachers are well aware of how individual children operate within class sized groups. This is oJen quite different from how they operate alone or in small groups outside of the classroom. The overriding consideraCon at all Cmes must be the learning environment for all members of the class.
Teachers, Resource Team and AdministraCon meet in June to determine placements. Classroom placements are indicated on the June Report Card. Students may experience both excitement and disappointment as they learn of class placements for the following school year. We acknowledge that there are some students who may iniCally be concerned with their class placement. Part of a new school year is making new friends. We are seeking parental support in helping students to understand the importance of class formaCons which are most conducive to learning and teaching.

Phys Ed News
In January we have worked on our basketball skills: learning to move to open space, different types of passes and variaCons of the game. We have also been focusing on the fitness aspect of our daily warm-ups: proper technique and geKng into the Moderate-Vigorous Target Heart Rate zones. We will be starCng our Yoga unit shortly concentraCng on breathing strategies, muscles and their locaCons and working on our flexibility. In addiCon, this month marks the 99th annual Winnipeg Speed SkaCng Races held at the MTS Center on Wednesday, February 28th from 4:30-6:30. Info was sent out to parent/guardian e-mails with a link to the permission form of those students interested in parCcipaCng. **Permission Click (no app needed, no login needed!) is an online permission/registraCon form that greatly reduces the use of paper and allows 24/7 access to info (i.e., pracCce Cmes, event dates, etc.) For all future Phys. Ed. acCviCes, Permission Click will be used so please make sure your current e-mail is on file. Paper copies will be available if absolutely necessary. ** A Floor Hockey intramural Permission Click has gone out for any grade 3-6 students wanCng to join. A re-minder that students need to change and have proper indoor footwear. Gr. 3/4 = Tuesday, gr. 5/6 = Thurs-day at lunch in the gymnasium. The grade 1 & 2 Mini-Intramural Program was a great success! Students got the chance for extra pracCce on their Fundamental Movement Skills, teamwork skills and to be acCve. Stay tuned for another round in the month of March. Once again, this year we are geKng our divisional set of skis from February 5th-22nd and we get to try out snow shoes from February 23rd - March 13th! Students in grades 3-6 please come fully dressed for the out-doors during these Cmes so that we can conCnue exploring different avenues in which we can be physically acCve! I came across the Winnipeg Trails website, which can be found at winni-
pegtrails.ca. It has maps outlining trails all over our beauCful city and even an app, which challenges you to find and collect hidden gems alongside other neat features. It's a great way to get outdoors, be acCve and explore Winnipeg through cycling, skiing, walking, skateboarding, wheelchair and skaCng! Mlle B. Wolfe
Wednesday, February 28 Pink T-shirt Day Society AnC-Bullying Campaign. We encourage students and staff to wear pink to show their support. In today’s digital world, it can be difficult to escape online bullying, whether it takes the shape of harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing in-formaCon or threats. This year, Pink Shirt Day is encouraging
others to combat cyberbullying by thinking twice before posCng something negaCve, and instead using the
internet to spread kindness -because we know that Nice Needs No Filter!

This year, we are focusing on READ ACROSS CANADA. We will post a big map of Canada in the front hall and as the students read we will mark their progress working from the west to the east (10 km per book). We will also have a “We read too, can you guess who” staff bulleCn board (located near the main office) with pictures of our staff as elementary students with our favorite book Ctles. Students will have an opportunity to guess who and submit their answers for a chance to win some book prizes.
Monday, February 19th is Louis Riel Day in Manitoba. Louis Riel was a MéCs leader of the Red River Resistance of 1869-70, he was instrumental in draJing the List of Rights that formed the basis of the Manitoba Act , passed by the Parliament of Canada in the spring of 1870. He helped to bring the new province of Manitoba into ConfederaCon. Louis Riel was the driving force behind Manitoba becoming Canada’s fiJh province. His dream of a province
that embraces all cultures is sCll shared by Manitobans today. On Friday, February 16th, we will have an interacCve and informaCve assembly to discuss the importance of Louis Riel. The Grade 4 students will be leading the assembly and will be taking quesCons from the audience as well as presenCng a picture slide show of Louis Riel’s life.
