It was very pleasing to see so many students attend and participate in the district swimming carnival on Tuesday. Leading up to the day there were a few nervous students showing their apprehension about swimming however I was so proud of not just the fact that these particular students got in and had a go but more so for the fact that they went in multiple events, not just the freestyle. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding behaviour that the students displayed on the day and the large number of parents who attended as spectators. The venue worked really well this year and the 25m races didn’t look so daunting when staring down what normally would be a 50m pool as well as the fact that we had no sun safety issues as we were indoors. Your feedback in relation to the venue would be greatly appreciated as there may be potential to hold the carnival there again next year. At the end of the day Ethan Monks was the 11 year boys champion and Milaya Mackenzie was the junior girl runner-up. Any students who qualified for zone would have received their note and information either yesterday or today. The Northern River PSSA Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday, 28 February (Week 5). The North Coast Carnival will then be held the following Wednesday. K/1/2—Mrs Cantrell

Today I assessed the Kindergarten students using the Best Start

program. This gives me a good idea of where the children are in such

things as their letter and number knowledge, their understanding of how

to use a book, their comprehension and language. I was very impressed

with how confident they were and how much they already know. They

were quite excited when I said I was going to ask them about what they

knew, as like most little kids, they love to show you all the things they can

do. We also discussed the fact that if they can’t do something, they are in

the perfect place to develop those skills –school!

Here is Jett making repeated patterns!

Reading at School and at Home

In 2018 some of our school Learning and Support allocation is being used to improve the reading abilities for each student in the school. Each week the year 3/4/5/6 class is split in two allowing two intensive reading sessions to take place where students read aloud, listen to their teacher read or by themselves. It is so motivating to hear stu-dents using expression and attempting challenging words with success. It is also an opportunity for me to work

more intensively with specific students.

If you are not sure where your child is at with their reading, I strongly recommend you listen to them each night. I enjoy reading 3 to 4 books to my daughter each night so I would also encourage you to read to your child/ren as

well if you have the time. Reading is an important part of learning and just 20 minutes a day = 4040 minutes a year.

News from Miss Rena

This week the students have continued to show a positive attitude towards each other. It is truly wonderful to see

students of different ages playing together in the playground. In the classroom, the story is the same with everyone

sharing school equipment and helping each other. After many computer technical problems finally our school has a

class set of laptops and Minecraft has been installed on them all. The 3-6 class have been doing mapping activities

in Minecraft in the ICT classes. Minecraft has also proven to be a good wet weather activity for some students. Our

corn is finally starting to get ears. When the corn is ready to eat we can have a cooking day for canteen. If there are

any parents who would be willing to help out on a cooking day please contact the school. Also the 3-6 class is hav-

ing an excursion around The Channon next week for science. Everyone needs to bring back their note which gives

them permission to walk around The Channon.

Dunoon PSSA Swimming Carnival

We were very proud of all of the students who competed in the Dunooon PSSA Swimming carnival on Tuesday.

The Northern Rivers Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival will be held at the Lismore Memorial Baths on Wednesday, 28 February, 2018. The cost is $5.00 per student which needs to be paid to the school. Entry costs is $4.40 for participating students and $3.00 for spectators. Please note that these entry cost are to be paid on entry into the

pool on the day. If your child is selected and cannot attend please let the school know A.S.A.P.

Year 5 & 6 Richmond River Campus Orientation Day

Students in years 5&6 are able to attend the Rivers Richmond River Campus Orientation Day on Tuesday, 27 February. The day will run from 10am until 2pm. This is an opportunity for the students in years 5/6 to network with peers from the surrounding schools as well as gaining exposure to how Richmond High School operates by participating in activities. All students attending must be in full school uniform and wear a school hat. They will need to bring recess, lunch and a water bottle. Transport will be by bus. A Permission will be distributed to all year

5/6 students next week.

Kindergarten shoes!

Sometimes, when the weather is wet or hot, we allow the children to take off their shoes when they come into the classroom. This of course necessitates putting them back on to go outside, which happens a few times a day. If your child has shoes that are difficult to put back on it makes it hard for children and teachers. If your child has shoes with laces, please teach them to lace up their shoes. Velcro shoes are great! They are easy for kids to take off and put on. Please consider buying your child a pair of Velcro shoes. That would help the children and their

teachers.

Online Newsletter It has been great to see the large

amount of families who were opting to get the online newsletter in 2017.

If you are a new family and would like to receive a weekly electronic
