    Environment Network meetings –

what’s on and register for the mailing list

The MINTRAC/AMPC Environment Network provides opportunities for Environment Officers or

interested personnel on meat processing plants to hear about current and ongoing research and

development in the environment and sustainability area.

This year we have three meetings scheduled – 2 March in Melbourne, 5 March in Brisbane and 22 May

in Tamworth. Each meeting will cover a specific topic for example in Melbourne we will be talking

about research programmes in waste management, in Brisbane the focus will be water conservation

and in Tamworth the topic is energy efficiency.

There are also two site visits included in the meetings this year, one to see the solar energy project at

Hardwick Meatworks in Kyneton and the other to learn about the waste water management system at

    Carlton Breweries in Yatala.

If you have not already done so you can contact MINTRAC to update your details and ensure you are on

the mailing list to receive the invitations to these meetings. Alternatively, you can book on the

    MINTRAC website.

The Training Networks are changing ….

From the beginning of 2018, the Training Networks are being replaced with the HR, WHS and Training Net-

    works.

We have a new and expanded agenda, and we are now starting earlier (10.00am). The networks are more

strongly focused on the operations and requirements of processors, in particular, Human Resources, WHS

    and Training personnel.

We encourage you to join us to:

provide input into current workforce projects

provide input into the AMPC R&D Strategic Plan

    hear about completed workforce projects

discuss your current workforce challenges and issues

catch up on current industry issues and research activities

gain an understanding of how your Company can access industry funded training and funding for

    workforce projects

identify collaborative activities which can be undertaken

join in communication with State departments

gain information about current developments in the vocational education and training system

suggest workshops and topics of discussion for future meetings.

As always, it is free to attend these network meetings, but it is essential that you RSVP via the MINTRAC

website so that we can cater appropriately.

Over the past few weeks, MINTRAC has been contacting every processor and RTO to update our mailing

lists for these meetings. If the request has not reached you and you wish to be included, please contact

Tania on [email protected]. Be sure to let her know which State you are from and which

Network you wish to receive information about.

Development of a Maintenance Training Strategy

    invitation for feedback

MINTRAC are currently undertaking an AMPC funded project to develop a training strategy in the area of

maintenance training. Many plants have trade qualified staff working in their maintenance section who

undertake trade qualifications such as a Certificate III in Engineering, however there are few training

pathways available for trades assistants or cross trade training for already trade-qualified staff.

Initial investigation and consultation has indicated an interest in developing accredited training and materials in this area and MINTRAC invites anyone interested in providing feedback on this project, in particular Engineering and Maintenance managers/office, to contact Sharon Fitzgerald [email protected] or 0408 612 883.

Request for Permit training now available online

MINTRAC are now offering Request for Permit (RFP) training online. The training program covers the unit

AMPX424 Raise and validate request for export permits and Meat Transfer Certificates. Students have the

option of completing the training online and receiving a certificate of participation or doing an

assessment and receiving a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency.

Once logged into the online program students go through the material and answer questions at the end

of each section. The questions are designed to help the students check their learning. Once the training is

completed students are issued with a knowledge based test which they send to MINTRAC for marking. If

students get all the questions correct they will be issued with their certificates of participation.

Students who wish to complete the formal option will be enrolled with an RTO and will need to complete

several assessment tasks. There is an extra cost for this.

The online program costs $210 including GST per person. You can purchase it on the MINTRAC website (on the products page) or email [email protected] for more information.

    AMP Version 3 summary

Progress with the Model for Meat Inspection Training Project

    at Charles Sturt University.

Many students undertaking studies in Agricultural Science or Animal Science never think of the meat

processing industry as a possible career. Now 14 students at the Wagga Campus of Charles Sturt

University have been given an opportunity through an AMPC funded project to gain Meat Safety /Quality

Assurance (QA) Qualifications and undertake extended placements with meat processing companies.

The undergraduates have undertaken the theory component of the Certificate Meat Safety course and

have now completed four weeks practical on the slaughter floor during their mid-semester and mid-year

breaks. Their practicals were done at a range of large, medium and small works and all students had

exposure to both export and domestic requirements.

After seven months in the course thirteen of the fourteen students are still enrolled, with five having

finished the Certificate III in Meat Safety already. All students are on track to having Certificate III and IV

meat industry qualifications by the end of this year and will be continuing on to the Certificate IV which is

focused on HACCP and QA systems.

Five students have done ovine inspection and another five bovine inspection with three having done both

species. Our first graduate student has started work in the meat processing industry while others who are

completing their degrees will be available for casual work until they graduate.

If you are interested in making contact with these students please contact Clive Richardson on 0409438390 or [email protected].

Proposed changes to the exam generator

MINTRAC is currently working on an AMPC funded project to review and redesign the Meat Safety exam generator. The project will enable the MINTRAC team to revisit the bank of questions and images to ensure that they provide an adequate coverage of the topics. Where necessary the questions and images will be enlarged to make it a better tool for assessing a candidate’s knowledge of a range of meat inspection topics which align with the accredited Units.

The topics covered by the exam generator will relate to accredited meat safety Units but not tied specifically to a Unit code. So, trainers delivering a Unit such as AMPA3121 Perform ante and post-mortem inspection – Bovine would use the exam generator topics ante mortem bovine and post mortem bovine. Each topic will be divided into groups and sub groups. For example, the topic post mortem inspection has a group “diseases” and this group has a number of sub-groups including “pluck”.

For organisations wishing to assess the currency of a Meat Safety Inspector’s knowledge then the new exam generator will enable an exam to be tailored to the species, the inspection position and the relevant diseases and conditions.

The new exam generator will be web based and will allow (Registered Training Organisations) RTOs to access the generator from the MINTRAC or AMPC web site. It will also allow RTOs to add questions and images to the exam generator and share them if they want with other RTOs.

Access to the exam generator will be via a password and RTOs with access rights will be able to issue their students with a password so they can set their own trial examinations. The generator will be reviewed each year and updated by questions and images provided by RTOs, companies and regulators.

If you want to become involved in the review of questions or images or have questions or images you would like to see added to the exam generator then please contact Clive Richardson on 0409438390 or [email protected] or Fiona Gojan 02 98196699 or [email protected].

Cases for Change open for public comment on the Skills Impact website

A Case for Change sets out evidence for proposed changes to a training package (i.e. qualifications, skill sets

and units of competency). It includes the scope of the research, analysis and industry engagement

undertaken to collate the evidence base.

We welcome your feedback on the draft Cases for Change to see if they accurately describe industry skills

gaps and the need to review or develop qualifications, skill sets and units of competency.

The Cases for Change listed below have been prepared by Skills Impact under direction of the Meat

Industry Reference Committee (IRC). They are developed in conjunction with the IRC Skills Forecasts and

Proposed Schedules of Work and most often they will align to Priority Skills Areas outlined in these

    documents.

The draft Cases for Change will be submitted to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) for their

consideration. Once approved by the AISC, a Case for Change will form the basis of a project to review and

develop relevant qualifications, skill sets and units of competency

New Units in Threat & Vulnerability in Assessment Critical Control Points

This draft Case for Change provides evidence of industry and regulatory support for the development of

one new unit to support quality assurance workers in the analysis of Threat Assessment Critical Control

Points (TACCP) and Vulnerability Assessment Critical Control Points (VACCP) – a requirement for British

Retail Consortium (BRC) and other proprietary quality assurance systems. The BRC Global Standards are

used extensively by Australia’s international meat customers, and Australian meat processors are regularly

    audited against these standards.

Development of a Food-Safe Pest Control Management Program

This draft Case for Change provides evidence of industry and regulatory support for the development of

new units and a skill set in pest control management for quality assurance workers in a meat processing

    premises.

Adding Value to Material Handling Through Traceability of Products

This draft Case for Change provides evidence of industry support for the identification and/or development

of three new units and two skill sets to address skills requirements in meat storage and handling.
