Sarasota Orchid Show 2017

Dear Sarasota Orchid Society Members,

Thanks to you, our annual show was a huge success!

From booking the auditorium and lining up the vendors to accounting for every dollar we took in and spent, it

was a yearlong process to put on our 2017 show.

Let me begin by thanking our co-chairs, Laurie Stoner and Jo Davis, who put in untold hours planning it. You

both did an outstanding job. Although you have done it many times before, I know it’s still a scary process

that you worry about until every vendors are under contract and the volunteer positions are filled.

Next, I want to thank Bob Scully, our head judge, who meticulously updated our show schedule, suggested

how to improve our slate of awards, and lining up the AOS judges. On Friday of the show, while Jack Kneuse

and his team worked to put in the beautiful display!! A big shout out to Jo Davis and Wolf Bruckner to

coordinating all of the SOS members’ plants and making sure they were properly labeled and classified.

I really want to thank Jane Hagerstrom, who took on advertising and with her talented husband’s help,

created the striking artwork you saw in all of the ads, the posters and bookmarks. Jane also coordinated the

Show survey to track the effectiveness of our advertising dollars. Great work!

I want to thank Norm Hillstrom, Craig Silipo and their team, who worked tirelessly to lay out the show,

distribute the background plants, deliver the materials for our display, tear down, clean up, and return

everything to storage. It’s a huge, dirty job and I don’t know what we’d do without them.

I want to thank Karen Bird-Lister, who creates our newsletter each month, but also created all the labels for

our display. Special thanks goes out to “Big Al” Langdon who coordinated the Plant Hotel at the Show. Alan

Marlor chaired the clerks. Friday was a very long day but Alan and his team of clerks kept at it until each and

every ribbon and every show awards was placed in the displays! A super big thank you to all the clerks that

gave up their Friday night to work with the AOS and keep track of all the Ribbons and Awards. That includes

… Marty Cooper, John Rich, Karen Bird Lister, Jane Shapiro, Roy Krueger, Wolf Bruckner, Susan Gerhardt,

Betty Smith, Kaitlin Kuhn, Lorena Ontiveros, Ginny Wiseman, Barbara Delgato, Cindy Auchter, Patty Turffs

and Marta Hudson.

I would like to thank Roy Krueger, for not only doing a great job with admissions, but who also taught several

orchid culture classes, Monroe Kokin for his Orchid Q & A Classes and Jim Roberts, who despite manning his

own sales booth, also taught a class!

I want to thank Susan Gerhardt and Marta Hudson for orchestrating a wonderful judge’s dinner. Patti

Quinnelly and Judy Robertson and their team for orchestrating the food and hospitality on the stage, Cora

Sanders and Jane Shapiro for running the raffle during the show and Patti Quinnelly for doing the raffle with

our membership, and Marta Hudson for doing such an excellent job her first time at the membership table.

I know, this is a long list, but let me close by thanking everyone who served on one or more of the committees.

I heard numerous comments from attendees that you were so friendly and charming they’ll certainly return

next year! Karen Bird-Lister, Karen Bologna, Barb Delgato, Ria Escobar, Alan Marlor, Cindy Auchter, Patty

Turffs, Wolf Bruckner, Marty Cooper, Jinny Wiseman --- your efforts are greatly appreciated! I hope I didn’t

miss anyone… Congratulations, again, for making our show so successful!

Gratefully,

Dennis Pavlock, SOS President

Silent Auction Guidelines:

We will limit the total number of plants to 4 or 5 per month By the 20th of the month, prior to the upcoming meeting, a

member will email a request to Denny Pavlock ([email protected]) with the number of plants they wish to bring.

Include the name of the plant, the approximate number of pseudo bulbs, size of the pot, basket or mount or that it is a bare root.

If you have a jpeg picture of the flower, please include with your request.

o If you do not have pic, SOS will provide one, if plant is not blooming

Plants must be clean with no scale, thrips, etc. If desired, specify the minimum price you will accept for each

plant. If desired, specify an “eBay type Buy-It-Now” amount for each plant

so that a member may instantly purchase the plant. o Note: The plant will then immediately be removed from the

Silent Auction Table To confirm your inclusion in the Silent Auction, Denny will send

you, the member, a Silent Auction Form.

The seller will receive 75% and the SOS will receive 25% of the

sale’s price.

o Member will receive the total amount of the sale and is

responsible for returning 25% (cash or check) plus the Silent

Auction Form to the SOS Treasurer at the conclusion of the

meeting.
