“Slow down, you move too fast” - Remember listening to that song by Simon and Garfunkel when it came out in 1966? We can take that advice even now-slow down-in our busy world. If we slow down, we have the opportunity to make connections to our body and our breath to see how they have an intelligence we can learn from, for our well-being. In these sessions, we intend to take the time—slowly and deliberately—to focus on ourselves through our bodies and breath. Using somatic exercises and meditations, we will explore these relationships and connections in order to develop an appreciation of possibilities we were never aware of to cultivate relief from tension and the ability to relax. If you would like more information, contact: RIVA WEST— [email protected] or 250 752-7178

Beyond newspaper and magazine horoscopes, the Sun, the Moon, the Planets, the Stars and more link us to an astrological world view. Intrigued or interested? If you are curious as to how an astrological approach could help you learn about yourself, you are invited to join an actively inquiring group of women in exploring this tool of under-standing. At each session, we come together to share our individual research learning a little bit more about our-selves, each other and those around us. We also delve into the useful tool of the Tarot as an adjunct to astrology. We will begin this year’s session travelling around the zodiac looking into the Signs-Aries through Pisces. Interested in finding out what your sign might tell you? Come join us. If you would like more information,

The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Aux-iliary, Branch 76, recently awarded the very prestigious Meritorious Ser-vice Award to Evelynne Stegmeier, a 27 year Life Member and Betty Yaco-boski, a 25 year Life Member with the auxiliary. They received this award for their outstanding devotion to the aims and objects of the Royal Canadian Le-gion Ladies’ Auxiliary. This award is the highest award available to auxiliary members. These two ladies are long time mem-bers of our Centre who contribute and volunteer at the Centre as well as par-ticipating in activities and events each year. Congratulations to you both.

ANSWER TO “NO CHEATING: In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the same word. Did you figure it out? No? Get your friend(s) to figure it out and stump them as well. Then you will feel better too!

In 2017 the NEEDLEWORK GROUP had a very productive and enjoyable year. We

had new members join who were happy to share their skills. We have been without

a very valuable member of our group since September—Yula Gall. Her experience

and advice is very much missed. Hope to see you soon Yula.

Thank you for the donated yarn from senior centre members that was used for

squares for blankets, toques and scarves. All were donated to the homeless. Grate-ful thanks to Tina Beal who generously donated wool to our group. We also knit and crochet shawls and lap blankets for seniors in hospital, scarves

and small items for the Haven Society. Our most popular item is always the

Catnip Mice and a close second is the Dishcloths. These are made for

Garage Sales at the Senior Centre. Members all support their favourite

charities. Donations for the homeless can be made on Saturday mornings at the Manna outside the Salvation

Army Hall in Parksville.

An Italian Family you think? An old gentleman lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very hard work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote to his son and described his predicament: Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be able to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love Papa A few days later he received a letter from his son. Dear Papa, don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are buried. Love Vinnie At 4:00 am the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son. Dear Papa, go ahead and plant the to-matoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances. Love Vinnie

Over 70 members of the Senior Centre gathered on the 20th of March to celebrate Robbie Burns. All en- joyed a tasty meal of roast beef and all the trimmings, prepared and served by Joan & Ron Walsh, daughter Ann Marie, Lynne Britz & Marg Jenkins. To get the evening off to a good start the Ramblers played some Scottish songs for all to sing along ...just prior to the Scottish dancers who arrived ready to perform. We enjoyed the talents of the Highland Girls and Kevan and the Country Dancers. What a nice way to get things

under way! John & Fern Reid piped in the Haggis carried by Maggie with Betty Smith wielding the sword. Bill Smith addressed the haggis in fine style. Many thanks to all who participate in this entertaining event each year. The Ramblers continued on with Scottish music for a sing-a-long and then some lively music for the dancers to enjoy! Always a fun night for everyone!

You are Unique Have you ever felt shy or embarrassed that you’re different; that you cannot blend with the others or fit that perfect picture of how life should be? Have you thought about the fact that a group of people called “society” decides who is beautiful and who isn’t; what’s normal and what isn’t? There is NOT a universal law about who we are supposed to be. Being your unique self is making that huge and needed difference in the world. Living your own unique story inspires us and ex-pands our own horizons. Therefore, it is your obli-gation to manifest your human right to be your unique self. Get our of your shell! Colour the world!

Keep that brain working; see if you can figure out what these seven words all have in common: 1. Banana 2. Dresser 3. Grammar 4. Potato 5. Revive 6. Uneven 7. |Assess Give it another try. Look at each word carefully. You’ll kick yourself when you discover the answer. This is so cool … “No, it is not that they all have at least two double letters”. Answers on page 3. No peeking unless you absolutely can’t figure it out. But, if you did you get a gold “smartypants!”

… NO CHEATING, NOW ...

Way back when I was in grade eight, Thought girls were second rate

Until I met a girl of twelve. As cute as one of Santa’s elves, An attitude so bright and sunny, Lips so soft and sweet as honey.

‘Twas puppy love I will agree, But I fell for her and she for me.

My grades declined, although I tried, My mind was elsewhere occupied. With daydreams of a pretty face,

My schoolwork now took second place. I packed her books and walked her

home, I even wrote to her, a poem,

And while it did not get her attention, It caused me after school detention.

We were not into heavy dating, Some movie shows, or

winter skating. Of many walks we two could boast, We made a pair of wiener roasts.

And so it went, grade nine and ten, Until there came a moment when

We realized that in the end, We were not lovers, only friends.

Yet, though no lasting pact ensued,

It was a pleasant interlude. If we met today I hope I’d find,

Her life has been as good as mine. For later, though it wasn’t she, I found the girl that was for me.

Why do these thoughts occur today? ‘Twas so long ago and far away.

First Love by Gus Gleim

TWO young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the check out counter. The man at the counter asked the boy “Son, how old are you?” “Eight”, the boy replied. The man continued “do you know what these are for?” The boy replied, “not exactly, but they aren’t for me. They are for my brother; he’s four”. “We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now, he can’t do either.”

A special menu is planned, sign up early as we have limited seating: 11:30 & 12:30. You won’t be disappointed. The RCMP will be coming in to present a safe at home pro-gram.
